Okay. today I got a longshot, and the paintjob looked really retarded (duh) so i thought of making it look sort of steampunk. Since I only really know the basics of spraypainting, i was wondering if anyone would give me some tips to do this before i really fuck it up. thanks.

If you only know the basics of spray painting, then don't try to go full out steampunk yet. Do some simpler paintjobs first, until you get good at it. Also, most people on this forum have a tendency to hate steampunk nerf guns, because they're so over-produced.

Steampunk isn't just paint. Good steampunk tends to be VERY complex, and unless it's good, it's terrible. Steampunk really isn't worth trying unless you're serious about it.

Steam punk is usually done in all brush paints because you need to get the worn out, rusty, and old look. Spray paint is too even. Also, you're going to want a ton of oxidized copper nic-nacks to fuck your gun up with, so go for it.

I would start out something easier. And if you are going to spray paint, use masking tape to cover up any opening that the paint can go in. Spray paint has a glue affect. That could fuck up your gun right there.
