Has everyone taken a peek at these little guys Jobs announced today?

It's basically a smaller, more colorful, 4Gb iPod for $250.

The word on the geek front is that people will just shell out another $50 for the 15Gb iPod but I'm not convinced. What I really can't wait for is when they announce the 8Gb version at $250 and drop this one to $199.

Either way it's a cool toy. Too bad they missed Christmas.

Teh reason why they missed christmas was cus they had trouble finding a small enough hardrive to fit in the new case. There might not be a new ipod.

Only $250?! That's not bad at all. I wanna get the original IPod though. I'll wait till the price goes down.

I think they look ugly, especially the edges of it. None of the colors are appealing either. And to top it off, it's only 4 gigs and it costs $250?! I don't see any reason to get it if you could just spring an extra $50 and get a 15 gigger.

Well, that's the way a geek would look at it.

I'm kind of on the fence there. On the one hand you have 11 Gb more capacity for only $50. On the other hand, this is significantly smaller, lighter, comes in assorted colors that you may approve of, holds more than enough songs to get me through a week without file swapping, and, what's that? Yeah, it also costs $50 less. I'd love for it to crack the $200 mark but Apple tends to over-design, over-engineer, and over-price just about everything.

Jobs is betting that the people who would normally shell out $150-200 for a solid state player with 256Mb will think that $50-100 more for 4Gb of iPod goodness is quite a deal.

Consider this I've heard that their batteries go out from multiple sources. The iPod's nice look does not seem so appealing to me anymore, especially considering its premium Aplle price. Generally you get a consider that premium is for a certain Apple quality, but your paying an awfully lot for something to just flat out die in a year and a half. I mean by the time a person fills up the harddrive and listens to it all, its practically over.

This is always good to consider too!

I see your point cxwq. I guess I was just considering my needs. The new slim design was a good move and if 4 gigs is all you need, I guess it is pretty nice getting the newest model and saving 50 dolla.

My question is why spend $250 on a 4 gig player when you can spend $50 less and get 16 more gigs of space? If I wasn't spending money on my car stereo instead, I'd probably buy this:

vs.

3.6 by 2.0 by 0.5 = 3.6 inches^2


I'd pay the extra $50 and settle for less storage if it means I'd actually have it with me when I want to use it.

The $50 is a moot point however since they're the same price as the mini iPods. The $199 Archos you linked to is used.

And the big difference is in the depth, and honestly, is 1.3 inches too deep? It's about the size of a regular iPod, I never heard anyone complain about that size.

That's more than twice as thick as a 15 or 20Gb iPod (.62") and more than half an inch thicker than a 40Gb iPod (.73").

At any rate, yes, I thought the original iPod was slightly too big to realistically have with me all the time. The mini iPod, at 3.6x2x.5 is shirt pocket size - it's smaller than the vast majority of cell phones. The Archos would fit in my cargo pants I guess but definitely nowhere else. The key to me for a portable music player is the portability.

I really, really like the iPod Mini. Okay, it's a little expensive...but four gigs inside of something that's about the size of a cell phone? With different colors? That's pretty good. And now they have other new things, too...Like the new earbuds that actually go into your ear. And the arm strap for jogging. Yep, Apple has done it again.
Oh, and the battery replacement for the other iPod's is nice. Now you don't have a $300 disposable mp3 player!

I know the new mini is smaller than the 15 and up ipods, but come on, does that really matter? You can already fit the other ipods in your pocket and have tons of space on a 15 oppose to the 4. And think of it this way....Even if you are only going to use 4 gigs, Isn't there a chance you might want to use more down the road? Plus, will all of that space you can even store just regular files from your computer. So if physical size is an issue, consider this: Both of them fit in your pocket, but one is more powerful (more than three times powerful) for 50 bucks.

I'm very intrigued by the iPod mini, but I've got a few questions about it. I heard that you can take files from a digital camera and upload them to a regular iPod. Do you just do it with a firewire cable? Will the mini still do it? I also saw something called an iTrip. Is that only for the big ones or will it work with the mini?
