I'm wondering how high you test your guns from. I've modded a couple of guns (an AT3K and an Uruk-Hai Crossbow), and I haven't been getting anywhere near the ranges listed in the mod posts. I've been shooting my guns level from thirty inches off the floor.

Well, parallel to ground (PTG) or ``flat'' distance is usually interpreted as zero elevation from a reasonable firing position. Since this is going to vary quite significantly based on the person and gun (4', 6" firing an at3k from the hip vs. 6', 2" firing a sm5k from the shoulder) there is some considerable room for improvement here.

Solving for time in the distance equation we get t=(2*height/9.8)^.5 so neglecting air resistance (which tends to exacerbate this effect) we note that a dart fired from 1 meter is in the air .452 seconds while a dart fired from 2 meters is in the air .639 seconds. On the distance end, air resistance tends to be a limiting factor but a 41% increase in travel time is still going to have a major impact on range.

Hum!

I hereby call for standardization of PTG/flat testing height.

How's 5' (1.5m) sound? it converts nicely for our metric friends and roughly approximates shoulder firing for many people.

Edit: When the fuck did Google turn into a calculator? Type "1.5 meters to feet" without the quotes... "2^.5" and "pi*3^2" are other examples.

CX, you're the only Nerfer I know who would choose a test height based on its ability to be easily converted to the metric system. You sick fucking bastard you.

BTW, why does your name turn green in the bottom of the screen when you're online? Think you're special or somethin? Huh?

What the fuck is wrong with the metric system? Every single country uses the metric system exept for the US,I have nothing against the US, but that was uncalled for.

sig-worthy.

But yeah, a set height to test from is a great idea...

...or at least people could tell what height they were shooting at if they don't like the metric system.

Anyways, interseting post C, I never knew height had that much effect on range.

When I was in high-school physics, I wrote this article about how much height can affect your range using kinematic equations. I forgot the exact numbers, but the difference of average shoulder height can affect the range up to around 15 feet.

That would explain why Vacc's guns get such good range. As for Ash, I have no idea how that midget gets the distance he does. I know Death did some sort of a school project which involved writing an equation to determine dart firing distance, although it seemed to focus on the drag or something.

I think his Linux box ate him or something.... either that or putting Linux on his X-Box has caused some sort of rift in space and time and sent him back to medieval England where he has to use his modern day intellect to overcome a large, invading army. Oh wait.....

Yea you'd think the sheer irony of installing linux on an XBox would create some kind of catastrophic "matter-antimatter'ish" explosion.
