So, I am involved in a LARP (Live Action Role Playing Game) in which NERF guns are used to represent firearms. However, most are designed to represent flintlock-era pistols and muskets.

Flintlock-style (In appearance) NERF weapons, you may notice, have a small problem. Specifically, the fact that there aren't any, to my knowledge.

So, I thought I'd throw this one out to the mad modders hereabouts, see what ideas come up.

How might we go about making something that looks like a Flintlock, yet fires NERF darts? I don't need high rate of fire, nor much range - 10 to 40 feet is the usual engagement distance, and the rules limit us to one shot per 10 seconds per pistol. Think muzzle-loading black powder, here.

I await your thoughts with interest....

I'm pretty sure Buzz Bee has a flintlock pistol out, or at least did a while ago.

If I recall correctly, it sucked major balls. But, if he really wants a flintlock nerf gun, that's the best he's going to find.

Take a flintlock toy pistol and put either a Nitefinder tube/barrel inside it, or if you don't want a springer, put a single SMDTG barrel in and put the pump in the grip. You should be able to setup a release valve attached to a stock trigger as well.

There's plenty of NERF guns out there with mechanisms small enough to go into a toy flintlock.

Or you could just buy a flintlock pistol that already shoots nerf darts.
I think this is what your looking for.

Would there be a market if someone were to make and sell nerf dart shooting, muzzleloading muskets? Anyone think so?

I think they did some pirates of the Caribbean themed stuff awhile ago.

**shrugs**

Otherwise, you are looking at some decent cosmetic work.

Or, you could do some blowgun stuff. Same time period, different part of the world.

Disney Online Store

First item listed. From the picture the darts it fires look exactly like nerf/buzzbee darts, so I'd assume its compatible.

Another alternative would be to find a hollow toy flintlock of any kind and put something like this into it. It's ranges are slightly higher than what you're looking for, but you can always pump it less.

Pick one and put a plunger and plunger tube in it. I think that the Pirates of the Coast pistol is the same as the first ones in the amazon search I just mentioned as well, which would mean that it's electric. Also meaning that the rifle fired the darts.

Probably not....if only because the aim of most nerfers is to have a more convenient blaster on the field, and a ramrodded/muzzle load musket is anything but.

That being said, I think the idea is cool, in the same sort of way that black powder hunting is cool. Definitely more difficult, but has major style points. I could never see there being a market for that style, but trying to build one would be fun. Ramrodding the plunger would allow for a whole different design than usual.

At the house we've got a couple of the Disney Pirates of the Caribbean flintlock guys in the basement. I've been giving some thought to doing a repaint - though as has been noted, they suck.

I really like the idea of doing a scratchbuilt homemade, and I've got some drawing that I've been working on. I was going to keep it quiet and bring it in as a surprise, but well, with you and Captain asking about it, I might as well talk it over with you two.

the LARPers might even be talked into granting arms of that class an exemption from their 10 second rule.

The rate of fire imposed by the rules is for game balance, more than anything. There's an extensive in-game production system and damage system (if you're interested, the base rules are the Accelerant system) and firearms are one of the things that can dole out the most damage with a single hit (and of course, out of range of some monster's polearm.)

In order to make that more balanced and fair, firearms are expensive to produce and take a good ten seconds to 'reload', wherein one is supposed to pretend (or actually) reload.

Contrast this with a "bow" where the rate of fire is as fast as you can chuck little beanbags, but you can't push as much damage through it (not even by half, really).
