Well, badger was going to make this thread, so I decided to, since they were concerning my darts, and I wanted to come clean out and say that what I was doing was wrong, and that I'm not doing it anymore. I hope that's ok with you badger.
Ok, in prep for APOC, I was making washer darts, but didn't have the foam to put at the end. What I was doing instead, was spreading the hot glue to cover the whole washer. I did that for about 20 darts, and then simply put a dab of hot glue in the middle, leaving exposed washer. This was very wrong of me, and this is my official apology. But, as soon as badger pointed this out to me a few rounds in at APOC, I did immediately switch darts to OMC's darts before playing again. Long story short, if your using washers to weight your darts, you can't have hot glue on then end, it needs to be foam.

As long as you sufficiently cover the entire exposed surface area of the washer in a good layer of hot glue I'm not entirely sure why these would be any more dangerous that hot glue and fishing weight/bb darts which are generally heavier. It's certainly not worthy of an "expose". Just fix 'em.

That said, the felt tips ARE an easier and more time efficient means of creating safe and accurate darts.

The whole point of using washers and felt discs was to avoid having to try and make uniform hot glue domes. It was more about convenience than safety.

Arn't the regular stefans hot glue tipped? What is it about washers that makes hot glue unacceptable?

Cause washers cover the whole are of the dart. If you just did a bad of hot glue in the middle, there is metal exposed on the sides.

Wow, I kept seeing these all over the place, and I wondered who had them. I think I even said something to Rover about it. Anyway, no harm done. Just don't do it again.

If you have the right washers, they should be slightly smaller than your foam and felt discs. If you use the exact materials CaptainSlug uses in his washer darts, exposed washers shouldn't ba a problem.

Are washers supposed to hurt more? In my experience a dome of hot glue with a sinker in it hurts considerably more, the force upon contact is more focused. I may end up making some CS style darts without the felt disc, because the difference in quantity of the two compenets when ordered is 85.

And? That's not a very good reason considering those 85 washers together are worth only 73 cents.

The felt is important to the construction of the dart. It makes the aerodynamic profile of the front of the dart uniform, it improve the seal of the dart in the barrel, It provides a minimal cushion to the tip, it gives extra surface area for the hot glue to adhere to (you fill the center of the washer with a bead of glue after sticking the washer to the felt disc), and it makes it very easy to tell if a dart is loaded into your barrel (if you use the white ones).

If you don't use the felt the risk of injury is low, but the darts will have the potential to be able to scratch cars and maybe even crack windows. Steel is a pretty unforgiving material.

Here are pictures of the darts in question:

These are the best pictures I could get since Maryann's camera needs to be charged. The dome of hot glue was coming through the center of the washer, but not covering it at all. These are potentially dangerous. A grazing shot across the face could cut you. I got shot by one of these in the face and it hurt alot more than any dart I've ever been shot with, and I kissed the pavement on Sunday. That hurt less than the dart. I would place these along the same lines as nail and screw darts...they should not be used.

By the way Ice, you lied to me. You blamed your friend Mike for making these darts, and here you told everyone you made them. Which is it? I wonder if your friend Mike knows you used him as a scapegoat for your careless dartsmithing skills.

Ok, I'm Mike for the people who don't know. Yes I made about 100 or so darts for the viking war. So when I was at ice's house preparing for the war he made 70 darts before I came. So then i started making them along with him. I ask him what the dome should look like and saw a little dab of hot glue in the center of the the washer. So thats what I did for most of the darts. I remember asking ice," Does in matter how much hot glue in on the dart". He then replied,"No I don't think so". So I am sorry for the danger that might/had have been caused. I might have miscommunicated with Ice but I don't think I did. Ounce again I am sorry.

That's pretty much his Modus Operandi, isn't it? Seems like kind of a juvenile design mistake... Oh, wait...

EDIT; Think what you want of me, I know I'm hated anyway. The point is, I'm not doing it anymore, ok?

I think that it's less that you are truly hated, and more that the adults realize your opinions don't really matter. Unfortunately, the younger crowd doesn't have that clarity of vision. So you feel like there is this whole section of the NIC that despises you, when in reality... We just know better. Props for coming clean and taking the blame, though.
