For those of you who are riding with me, and anyone else interested in camping, here are the options:
1.)Lake Fairfax Park. It's $25 per night per site, sites are limited to 2 tents and 7 campers. There's a shower, a swimming area and good parking for visitors if people want to hang out after the war. The problem is that you have to take the beltway to get pretty much anywhere to or from this campsite, so the trip to and from the field could take an extra 30 minutes or more just from traffic. The other problem is that they don't have a BBQ. I stayed here last DCNO, and overall it was okay.
2.)Little Bennett Regional Park Campground. It's $21 per campsite per night. They only allow 6 people per site and 2 tents, and they only allow two vehicles per site. They charge $25 for a BBQ, and $5 per car for visitors who aren't staying the night. This place is only about 20 minutes (30 with traffic) from the school, and is in the opposite direction from the beltway, so no nightmarish traffic possibilities. I've never been to this place before.
3.)Swain's Lock. It's totally free, but it's also first-come first-served, and you're not allowed to leave all of your stuff and take off for the day, so theres a possibility of not getting a spot on either night. This location has grills according to Crankymonky, and he has never had a problem getting a spot. The site is also very close to the field. It's about 20 minutes away along back roads which are never congested. I've seen the site while hiking along the canal path, and it's pretty nice. If we were going to camp here and couldn't find a spot, we could possibly go over to Little Bennett, and Lake Fairfax definitely does walk-ins, so we wouldn't be stranded.
I think Swain's Lock is a good way to go. However, if we can't get a spot there because it's full, it may be difficult for us to reserve more than one adjacent site at another place. It's only a problem if enough people want to camp that we'll need more than one site, and even then, it's not a major concern.
Edit:Updated the Little Bennett info.
