In my nerf wars, my friend uses a foam, Dollar Tree sword in wars. He is very skilled at deflecting darts, I've also been making knives out of the same thing. And buying some chainsaws. Would these be legal at wars? I'm thinking it would count as a barrel tap.
Also on the subject of swords, in my neighborhood wars my sword using friend also uses a shield at the cost of a projectile weapon, and if hit/deflected 3 times, he has to stop usage. Then when he gets hit, when he returns to the game he regains his shield.

In most cases melee weapons, and shields are not legal in nerf wars. But it mainly just depends on the person hosting the war.

I guess you have some heavy duty industrial strength toilet paper holders. Do they advise you to wear eye protection when changing rolls?

Nerf is mostly about shooting and being shot, not hitting people with foam swords, although that is also fun.

UBCon allows foam swords, and they're surprisingly effective. If you charge a group of people, you're going to get hit, but you're probably taking some of them with you. This is compounded by the allowance of shields (18" diameter max) for those willing to eschew ranged weapons entirely. It really adds another dimension to the game.

Plus, there's nothing to break up a standoff like a dozen guys with swords charging the other team while screaming incoherently.

We allow people to deflect darts, but honestly, you're better off just dodging them.

My friend is insane when t comes to reflecting darts. He can slice off a Magstrike raid, though he is weak against a Vulcan raid! And the shield we use is a hand crafted by me Hyrule Shield from halloween last year. It's pretty effective. The reason he uses that is because he sucks at aiming a projectile weapon. I like melee weapons, because you get to say "KNIFED!" when you stab someone.

At major wars: no
College wars: mostly yes

The reason he uses that is because he sucks at aiming a projectile weapon.

THen he needs to practice instead of making excuses.

I've never been to a major war, but the people I nerf with allow melee weapons. I think it adds a nice twist to almost any nerf game. A little off topic, but I make foam swords out of PVC and pipe insulation. I have a double sided, a normal and two daggers.

You could also say "SHANKED!" Since a slang definition (#5) of shank is a homemade knife.

I once used a large foam ball on a 6 foot rope as a ball and chain at a nerf war. It was... interesting, to say the least.

Us MNerfs would probably allow Chainsaws. Hilt and I ended two seperate rounds at MNCSO by running out and chainsawing the two people who were in a mexican stand off.

Swords=no
shields=no
knives=no
chainsaws=yes
LIGHTSABERS!!!!=HELL TO THE YEAH!!!

Watch the vid for that war and you will see why lightsabers are ok.

After my bbb arrows got crappy I cut the ends into points and took the fins off. I use them as daggers and it's essentially a bbb arrow still.

I have never been to a war with more than 40 people and to me that is a large war! It was indoors in vary tight areas we would use rubber knifes when we ran out of ammo.

What exactly constitutes a major war? Would a war with over 100 participants automatically count as major?

A Major war to me is one that is either recurring like APOC or Armageddon, and/or draws many people from all over the NIC.

So a large, recurring war that does not draw many people from the NIC would be major?

I think we need new terms.

Traditional NIC Nerf Wars: Apocalypse, Armageddon, DCNO, Hershfest, etc.
are structured and organized in a way that makes melee weapons unpopular and not practical. Most rounds are played outside and the majority of the firing is done between distances of 30 and 70 feet.
And as far as many organizers are concerned, melee weapons kind of defeat the point of having a Nerf War. Which should be about being able to legally shoot prepubescent males and not have it divulge into a boring game of hide-and-go-seek.

"Scenario" and primarily indoor Nerf Wars: HvZ, Assassins, UMD Nerf Club, etc.
have unique rules based on the venue and the local availability of blasters. Goucher college and it's surrounding stores completely sell out of Nerf products regularly so they had to include rules for impromptu weapons in order to allow increased participation.
Some college Nerf War organizers also have to heavy restrictions on what blasters can or cannot be used because of how confined most of the shooting is.
Most rounds are played inside or close quarters and the majority of the firing is done between distances of 2 and 30 feet.
