Hey Everyone

I just did a paint job. It didn't turn out the best because every time I put tape on the gun it peeled the paint right off. I waited till it was dry and got painting tape. I don't know whats wrong.

Thanks

Well if you're using clear tape or duct tape it does that. Very bad idea. ALWAYS use e-tape or painters tape. Also the paint should be able to handle it if you used a plastic primer. A lot of people say "Well I'm not looking for perfect, so I wont use primer." Trust me, its the difference of worlds. It only takes another 10 minutes to prime it. Since I started using it, I've never had any paint wear off or scratch.

Your blaster must be clean and dry before painting. Use plastic primer or krylon fusion paints. Wait for each coat to dry thoroughly before laying the next coat down. Once you get the colors you want painted on, use a clear coat. It will save the finish of your blaster.

Don't forget to sand the surface a bit first, wet-sanding with 400grit before your first coat will really help with paint adhesion.

You can skip the primer but you NEED to throughly sand everything down. And clearcoat is king.

Is there primer for plastics? What exactly does it do?

Clear coating? Can you even see it? Is it like a primer?

I got the real stuff dude. Krylon for plastics. Not some cheap stuff from walmart.

Thanks

1: Prime with Vinyl Dye, this is a special spray made for plastics, Vinyl Dye bonds to plastic instead of just laying on top of it. Then use regular spray or Krylon Fusion to go over. NEVER use Vinyl Dye over regular spray, it will peel right off.

2: Use blue painter's tape for marking edges, it's a special type of masking tape designed to go on easy and come off clean, I have never had a paintjob peel when using this stuff.

3: Allow paint to dry for at least 24h before taping, I know it may look and feel dry, but the undercoat almost surely isn't.

4: ALWAYS clear coat your paint job when complete. Use Krylon or Rust-O-Lium clear coat, you can pick Gloss or Satin finishes, this will protect your paint job and make sure that your hand doesn't rub the paint off. Clear coat is a special lacquer that is designed to protect and preserve paint colors.

A magstrike all taped and ready for final coat.

I applied black gloss vinyl dye to the base magstrike, allowed it to dry and went over it with Krylon Metallics Silver, then applied the blue tape, and cut it with an xActo knife to shape it correctly.

All that remains is to go over it with Krylon Fusion Black Gloss, and wait 24h to dry before removing the tape.

Plastic primer is available almost anywhere now, and a few layers of Crytal Clear Enamel never hurts(it actually makes it look a lot better). I've found that the Rustoleum Metallics dry really fast and very well, they don't look that bad either. Put a flat coat of gun metal then of silver, scrape the silver a bit whilst still drying with a copper sponge, mmm battle damage.

Nice j btw hereticorp

Oh hereticorp's got some great paint jobs so I suggest you follow his tips; I have since started following his methods after seeing that crazy sick silver/red firefly of his.

Also, don't rush things. BE PATIENT! You'll get drips from rushing coats and trying to do a full coat instead of doing light or medium coats. You'll mess up the paint by touching it too early and leave fingerprints. You'll peel paint off by taping over it too early if you haven't let it dry long enough. You'll cut into your paintjob if you rush with cutting the tape over it. Etc., see where I'm going with this?

The incredible irony about that is that gun is the one that I discovered you shouldn't ever use Vinyl Dye over regular paint on. So I have to strip the black off and repaint it. It was just the best picture of taping I had, so I used it.

On the topic of the poster right above this:

The Firefly all taped up before the final coat. This was a complex taping job, lots of detail work.

The end product, it turned out pretty well, but I need to do some touchup in a couple places.

So what do you think I should do now try to repaint it? Would you want me to load some pictures for you?

Sand the old paint off with fine grain sand paper and start over, that's the best thing you can do with a failed paint job.

Personally, I've never sanded a single one of my guns except to remove unwanted paint or protrusions, using Vinyl Dye makes sanding unnecessary.

Quite untrue. Some paints don't like vinyl dye, and many painting methods don't work well with it at all. More importantly though, any time you paint ANY moving part, you need to sand it first. Adding paint will make things like triggers thicken up and not move as well, or have too much added thickness for springs to pull them back without either wearing out the spring quickly, or not working all together. Vinyl Dye is not a catchall.

I put a lot of coats on it. Do think there is even a chance of it looking out good at the end if i repaint it? When I was painting it some of the paint started cracking. Do you know why? Oh, and I really appreciate all your help
