It doesn't have to be too snug for a homemade because the air volume is typically more than adequate. If you hold a piece of 1/2" PVC vertically and plug the bottom end, the dart should very slowly drop through. If it falls quickly, there is too much air going around the dart.
SCH 40 PVC (dark gray) is slightly smaller ID than SCH 80 so if your darts are smaller than typical, you should try that.

To correct and clarify my previous post:
1/2" SCH40 (white) is less than or equal to .622" ID (nominally .608")
1/2" SCH80 (gray) is less than or equal to .546" ID (nominally .528")
These vary since the only absolute requirements on PVC are OD (.840" for all kinds) and working pressure which varies from one type to another.

I used a metal ball valve for my homemade. I just hooked up a coupler to the pvc then screwed it into the ball valve. The coupler does not screw all the way in, but enoough to make a seal. Click on the link to see a picture(or copy and paste it): http://www.freewebs....newhomemade.htmhow can i attach a copper ball valve to a pvc pipe?
