This is a nerf gun that I built with my spare time over summer break.
It is an incredibly powerful air cannon. Without the silencer it is 40” long. I did not design it for battle practicality. I do not intend to shoot people with this gun. The only reason for this project was to see how much power a homemade gun could have, and this is certainly not the most powerful gun possible. It was just an attempt at a powerful nerf gun, and a fun project.

Gun without silencer.

The barrel is 17.5” long, and the silencer is 15” long.

The breech is a creative bit of engineering, I had to make. It consists of a piece of ½” PVC pipe with a 1 ½” notch to load the darts with. On either end of the notch is a piece of FBR that has been cut in half then hot glued to the ½” PVC. The sliding part is a piece of 1” PVC that is 2 ¾” long.

The back of the gun.

The front of the gun with the valves electrical box etc.

The firing valve is a 1” sprinkler solenoid valve. The galvanized pipe behind it is all 1”. I bought the wrong type of regulator for this type of gun, it is a flow regulator, instead of a pressure regulator. That is why the ball valve is there. To prime the firing chamber all I have to do is just barely crack open the regulator, and then open the ball valve until I have about 25p.s.i. in the small pressure chamber. Then I close the ball valve, and fire.
Radio shack sold me a bad switch so I have not been able to use the electronic firing system yet. Until I can get a new switch I will use the manual bleed.
The main pressure chamber is 24” long and made out of 2” PVC. I pressurize it with a bike pump to 60p.s.i. this allows for about 10 shots until the main PC is at 25p.s.i. and is no longer at a usable pressure.

The ranges with the normal barrel and 25psi. in the small chamber and the gun at a 0 deg. angle.
122’
134’
146’
150’
177’
178’
179’
207’
209’
222’
I haven’t perfected my Stefan making technique yet , so the ranges vary quite a lot.

Now for the fun part. With the gun at an angle of about 25 deg. a 38” barrel, and 65psi. in the small PC the farthest I have gotten it to shoot is 378’, Keep in mind that that was the best shot out of three.

I was wondering if any one has tried lubricating the barrel with something, and if so what did you use? I am looking for ways to increase range. Thanks in advance.

I lubricate my barrels with silicone lubricant in the spray form. Just point it down the front of the barrel and tap the button. It definitely helps the darts velocity.

378 feet!! Thats crazy. And I thought my Big Blast shot good. You know what is also fun. Shooting directly up. With my Big Blast I can just see the dart in the sky, so imagine this gun. :)

That is a very well constructed rifle you got there. Can I just suggest that you mod your sprinkler valve for pneumatic activation. Trust me it has a faster activation, you save money on batteries, and you get a cool new trigger.

Wow, that is one impressive clusterfuck of parts. I love it. Very nice use of gauges, where did you find them?

I have tried shooting at cardboard, but it just shreds the datrs. But when I make better darts I will try again.

I hadn't thought about making the valve operate that way, but I will try it if I can.

I bought all the parts except the regulator at True Value Hardware. The regulator I found at a local paint shop.

Very nice work.

While the manual bleed on the valve is indeed sufficient to get good shots, you ought to try modding the spriinkler valve with a bleed tube and second valve (usually a blow gun) a la the spudfiles link that veginator suggested.

I know it's not conventional ammo, but you can also fire things like AA batteries, differing kinds of materials, I used to make PVC projectiles for my spud gun that would almost disappear when fired at angle. Even small veggies that would fit down your barrel (or you could barrel up to more spud-ly ammo) would be fun to shoot.

The fact that you made a proof-of-concept model for your own "research", knowing that you won't shoot people with that thing directly is a sign that you are both capable and mature enough to enjoy a homemade of that caliber. Enjoy.

I miss my cannon. The Hunter valve is leaking from somewhere, and I'm going to have to saw apart my 3" PVC pipes to get the valve out before I repair it. I just don't have the time to do so, so it sits sadly in the corner or my workshop.

Increase the pressure. That should give you better ranges. I mean how are you getting such good ranges at 25 psi? Unless I'm missing something.

Wow. I would say about how ugly it is, but wouldn't want to piss it off. That thing is scary.

Following up on Piney's idea, I've used 1/2 inch(not sure of the measurement, but it fits in micro dart barrels) metal balls in my LBB. With my darts, it normally shoots 70ft, probally closer to 80 with better darts. With the balls it shoots 40 at most. Using them in your gun would make a musket shooting like 150'. ( The irony is, that thing shooting say, metal balls, could really fuck someone up, but its techinacly legal. If you were to modify a capgun to shoot an airsoft bb like 10 feet, it would be a firearm and illegal. America has to fix their gun laws.)

How much does it cost to make? Now i really want one. I'm loving the name.

It's always nice to see someone calling an experiment an experiment, rather than getting all excited about blasting people they supposedly like with a malnourished spudgun...

Cardboard? HA, how about wood. With a regular stefan at the right distance, I bet it could leave a mark.

Hell yeah, I had a singled titan that only shot 150'.
Shot it at a door and it left a serious indent. Then it was confiscated by my mother.

Shoot.

It cost me about 130 dollars to make, but I bought enough parts to build another air tank, and change things around to find the optimum power configuration. Although If I had used less galvanised pipe, and used PVC instead, the gun would have been alot cheaper. Also a lot lighter the gun is very heavy. So if I had been focusing on low cost instead of customizability and power then it would probably cost less than a hundred dollars.

Pineapple, I hope you can fix the hunter valve.
