So, in the process of modding my guns, I've gotten quite proficient with tools and my brain quite proficient at innovation. I'm just wondering if anybody else has put this quirk to use.

Note this is NOT a "hobbies" thread -- there's already plenty of those -- I'm just asking about small projects you've done on the side.

Here's some of mine:

My homemade air freshener... working so far!
I just put some H2O and spices in the top part (stapled to the bottom, kinda hard to see), and as the water evaporates, so does the smell!


Three swords: 1) For a Halloween costume, and purposes of general abuse, 2) Cane sword, for the talent show, 3) Mounted sword, also for the talent show (pedestal has since been dismantled).


My recycled cardboard desk and drawers... yes, I've had to repair the desk a few times, but it's been one year and it's certainly not falling apart!


Two paint jobs, one for a hollow journal (the journal itself was a project) and one for my accordion case.

I've also got some more things lying around that aren't exactly "projects," but they do get jobs done -- ie, my closet is a stack of moving boxes I've left open sideways.

I'm curious to see what everybody else has done. After all, if everyone has more innovative mods than me, I wonder what their desks are made out of...

Here's my load:


My long bike: It was a rusty tandem bicycle I got for my 16th birthday that I fixed up with my dad. It has a SpokePOV LED kit on the front spokes. Quite comfy and fun to ride, but it has the turning radius of a small car.


This is my flipped bike: I have no idea why I did this... its really complicated to ride, and I cant sit anymore. But it was a good use of an afternoon and an old bike.


My floppy disk backpack: Completely useless, never worn it in public.


My ultimate robot costume: Made it for a movie for our film class. Now I have the most awesome Halloween costume, but it needs more lasers...

My first luxeon saber: I got the kit for a Christmas present and just finished putting it all together a week ago. Its got LEDs at the base, and a rechargeable battery, but it still needs a grip.

Secret book: good for keeping money.

I've got plenty more little ones, but those are the notable projects. If anyone has any questions feel free to PM me.

Sadly my desk is made out of wood, you can see part of it in the Darth Vader picture.

How did you make your secret book? I used a dremel for mine but it kept burning out, so I'm going to have to find another way because my friend wants me to make one for him. I was thinking I'd just drill holes in each corner and then saw between them.

The trick is to glue the pages together before you start cutting. I just get normal Elmer's Glue and water it down to a paint like consistency, then paint the outside of the books pages and let it soak in.

The best way to make it look nice like mine is to use a knife, it takes a few days of watching TV, and cutting out pages. Instructable

I like the backwards bike, Axelion. I once tried building a backwards bike (seat where the handlebars go, etc), but I had problems with the bottom bracket binding up on me after pedaling for 10 feet or so.

My favorite bike conversion (of which I unfortunately have no pictures) was a 24" 5-speed bike on which I swapped out the front wheel for a rear wheel and chainstays from a kid's 16" bike. Instant front-wheel drive! The banana seat make it able to be pedaled. Oddly enough, it really did work well in snow and rain. The front coaster brake helped a lot, too. It was finished off with a black and purple cow-spot paint job and dubbed "Frankenbike". Even more oddly, it was stolen, but I never saw it around town. It would have been rather obvious had someone tried to ride it, though.

After reading the hollow journal instructable last night, I decided I was going to make one. 4 hours later I was done. Bitch and a half to do with a numb finger. Question by the way, I messed up while cutting so now there is a 1 inch curve sticking out on the inside. How do I (easily) fix it?

OK, FH I'll show what I've done.


Ok, so I've been playing guitar for about 1 1/2 years and my dad also plays too. For christmas I bought a Squier Strat from a Pawn shop for about 80$. Now this guitar was beat up and old. So I chipped out all of the black (original) paint off it and sanded it down. Next, I painted the guitar SeaFoam green. I also added a new pick guard to it, white pearl, to give it a retro 70's feel to the guitar.


Lastly I changed the strings and added some new, good, tuning pegs to it.

Yes, it is my self built LesPaul. I did use a kit, but what of it? I still like it.

Plays nice and has a nice fingerboard.

Ouch. I was totally let down when you said that it was a kit Anyway, I posted these before in a thread I made for this kind of thing, but I will post again. First is an old Ibanez RG560 that I refinished in a worn brown. It still needs new pickups and a new floyd rose, but I have no money.

They are really nice, come pre finished (you can paint or stain, but the LesPauls come with a sub par quilted maple top) and they are SUPER easy to put together.

Anyway, Slowguitarman, i love that acoustic. I have recently been playing my acoustic of the electric.

But yeah, i plan to make a more accurate LesPaul sometime, cut out my own body and all.

Make sure to post pictures if you get a guitar made. I love the les paul body style. I have two of them (the Ibanez in the picture and a knock-off brand red one). Thanks. I like my acoustic a lot too. It has been through a ton, but I like how it sounds.

And so as to not totally derail the thread, This is a picture I drew in MS Paint for a t shirt in high school. The word "deduce" became a big inside joke for my friends and I, so I made a Sherlock Holmes inspired Cosmo (Cosmo is also an inside joke) and I put deduce in a thought bubble over his head.

Anyways:

Nerfing was actually my hobby that was born from the joy of creating things. I'm majoring in Fashion Design (Don't start with the gay jokes, they're old already), and just loved designing things and seeing how they worked.

I received a Maverick as a Christmas present last December, fired it for a while, then thought, "What can I do to this?" I opened it up and gave it a slick paintjob, then due to my love of Physics and curiosity, I also asked, "What can I do to make this better?" I did as I thought, and when it didn't fire, I looked to the place where knowledge is infinite; the interwebs. I stumbled upon The Haven, and since then, I've spent way too much money on Nerf guns.

Oh, and I also paint my friends guitars for them.

I have no pictures for what I like to do for my projects because they all involve computers. I'm trying (not very hard) to learn C++. I taught my self some HTML, but I'm having trouble with getting C++ down. The syntax messes me up. I can't get the source right. I also enjoy painting airsoft guns... that I do have pics of. I will post them if it isn't against the rules.

This is my "special" rifle. Its an SD96B. Made by TSD. Its a replica of an L96AWP. The paint is for where I like to camp (thats right I camp) it matches the area quite well.




If this is wrong I will take them down, but I didn't see anything against this.


EDIT: If anybody is interested I can paint your Airsoft or NERF guns. If you're interested PM me and we can get things hashed out through that.

Ah well. It's not too much of a 'hobby.' A friend asks, 'Hey, can I get [this] painted on my guitar? You're an artsy person,' I said sure, and do so. I don't think I've got any pictures. I'll try and find/get some for you.

That's pretty cool actually, I have a friend going into fashion design. I don't bother with gay jokes, I get enough out of railing his Gucci sunglasses and noting one too many wrinkles in his jeans. Any chance we could see some of your work?

Ivan -- Please do. I have to say there are enough guitars in this thread already so it'll be nice just to see a small design or two.

...I'm currently in the planning stages of a wooden chest. Should be gorgeous. I need ideas for the latch though... it's going to lock shut. Anyone?

One of my other hobbies is Baseball, which I know tons of people have, and I have't exactly taken a picture of myself throwing a pitch. But my other main hobby is Remote Controlled Cars. I just got the new E-Firestorm for my birthday about three days ago or something. It's already broken. (Too big of a jump. ) I have to go mess around with the steering servo and the transmission gearing tonight. And the last hobby I have, very new, is Mario Kart Wii. I got that for my birthday as well, and I think it is one of the funnest games I have ever played. I haven't tested the Nintendo WFC on it yet. I've already unlocked like half the characters and almost beaten 150cc!

I have a bunch of side projects I'm working on. The only problem is that I don't have any cash to spend on them.
1. HUD (Heads Up Display) that I can plug into my ipod or a NWS I'm working on.
2. personal air conditioner- a system of water filled tubes that connect to fanny pouch thing that cools you off
3. human electronics system - combine myself with a bunch of projects to be a spy / super Nurfer.
4. camera system - people who have seen kipkays spy sunglasses (any MAKE subscriber ) integrate that with the HUD ad IR LED's and I have night vision goggles. And have cameras that are in Nerf guns that have LEDs for an awesome NWS (a IR LED instead of the red one in th nf will yield a great threat to night players).
5. The gauntlet - a wrist gauntlet that has a cell phone ,pen, and other stuff built in. A variable electronic super swiss army knife.
6. The Herbie robot with backup switch.
7. Combat robot.
8. An r/c etch-a-sketch.
9. I also like doing a medley of projects from my favorite books

well I ussaully make bows out of oak or cedar or any other suitable wood that I can find. The strings are the cord that make radial tries with. Probably can hold 550 lbs of force. and reading the dangerous book for boys. I also love my air rifle.
