The Ragged Old Flag
The Pledge Of Allegiance
While walking down the street one day,
I met a man who stopped to pray.
He knelt before our nation’s flag,
While others treat it like a rag.
I asked the man his business there,
He looked at me and fixed his hair.
He said “Young man, I have a story to tell,
One you might not know very well.
When I was a youth, not much older than you,
I joined the Marines, thought I’d try something new.
You see, I was mad at my parents and all of their rules,
I thought they knew nothing, just a couple of fools.
So I went through the training, all fit for war.
I was one of the best, the top of the Corps.
Then, before long, we all shipped out.
I’d finally see what wars all about.
We landed at noon, or at least at high tide.
Being scared would be useless, there was nowhere to hide.
Many men tried their hardest to flee.
But the Brave Ones charged on so you could live free.
We thought of our families and our God-given right
To defend freedom, and to be in this fight.
We did what we needed to protect Liberty dear,
So our fellow citizens would not live in fear.
I remember the morning we charged up that hill,
We wanted revenge, we were ready to kill.
But we were out-done by the enemys wit.
Almost every man had gotten hit.
But we still fought on, not losing hope.
Though many of them knew not how to cope,
I will admit it, I was afraid,
I thought I’d end up in a memorial parade.
So many soldiers surrendered their lives
To protect you, your families, your wives.
But they’re not remembered, no one seems to care
About what they went through when they were there.”
As I heard what he said, my eyes filled with tears.
I asked “How can that happen?” He said “It’s gone on for years!
People don’t think of the sacrifices made.
But the price of your comfort by a soldier was paid.”
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!
