[A side of nerf]

For those that don't know, The Nerf Warrior System is a way to store multiple nerf guns by the use of magnets, designed by flamingwindows and z80. I liked the idea of this, but I wanted something that allowed more mobility, something that didn't need to be strapped to your back. I came up with the pocket version of The Nerf Warrior System.


So first open the hard drive and extract all the goodies.


This is what the magnet looks like.


The magnet will be between two black peices of metal.


Separate the pieces.


The material for this part may vary. I used five ice cream tub lids for the "plate".


Cut out five congruent squares.


Attach them all together with zip ties.


Trim the zip ties.


Attach a piece of foam to the back of the panel for comfort.


Attach the two black pieces of metal to the front of the panel.


Fasten the magnet to the part of your gun that works best.


The finished product looks like this.


Slide the panel in your pocket and the gun attaches to the magnets. I don't know how well the connection is through thick denim. The maverick has somewhat of a good connection. I'm sure if it bumped into anything to hard it would fall off. So right now, this is a pistol holding system. (nitefinder, tech target, sneak shot, etc...)

Now that is a great idea. It definately is less bulky than a holster of any kind. Is it easy to take off and fire?

Yes it is easy to take off, the magnet strength is enough to hold the gun in place, but weak enough to still be able to remove the gun from the magnetic field. As for firing, the magnet on the cocking mechanism has no hinderence on the weapon.

Could you do the same thing to a magstrike clip? If so, that would be pretty handy. Wow. Ill have to look out for hardrives next time I go to goodwill.

Yes, I am guessing anything lighter than a Maverick will have a good hold on there. Some other things I thought up after you mentioned that were,

• magstrike clip
• Longshot/Recon clip
• recon parts (light, stock, barrel)
• a container (drink mix holder, box, tupperware) for darts

So yeah, I am positive it could hold a magstrike clip. The only problem is, the magnet cannot prevent the clip from going into the gun. On the recon or longshot, it would have to go on thhe little part that sticks out. On the magstrike, you would have to cut off the clip and replace it with the magnet.

Great idea but it lessens the amount of stefans you can carry with you. If you have a clip that would equal out the loss of capacity.

For bigger guns like Sm1500s and AT3ks, couldn't you just cut bigger squares and use two magnets? Of course it would need bigger pockets, but I think it would work.

Any ideas?


EDIT: To NerfCrazy, I'm pretty sure your can still put things in your pockets becasue the magnet would be pulling the lid-thing to the side of the pocket. Hope I semi-explained that..

For the Magstrike clip, couldn't you cut off the belt clip, and put the magnet there? I haven't gotten my hands on a Magstrike yet, but looking at pictures, there's a small gap in the shell for the belt clip.

I mean, you would probably need to use a different shaped magnet, as the ones from a Hard Drive are round.

The other thing that could be problematic, is that the weight of the magnet might prevent the clip from advancing.

You made a good point about the clip not being able to advance, maybe there would be a way to make the magnet detachable. I was thinking something like it attaches with a pin. You pull the clip off your pocket, pull a pin, the magnet comes off, something along those lines. Any suggestions?

Just so you know, you don't have to rip apart a hard drive to get powerful magnets.

K&J Magnetics has a pretty decent selection of neodymium (also known as rare earth) magnets. For your purposes, a pack of 3/4" x 3/4" x 1/16" thick magnets should do nicely. 1" x 1" x 1/16" thick magnets might also work, but I'd be concerned about them not letting go easily enough.

I'm just kinda seeing it being a little redundant for the Magstrike clip.

It's already got a clip on it, so, couldn't you just clip it to your pants? Because pulling the pin and having to fumble with the magnets sort of makes it more difficult and ruins the fluidity this project aims for.

An idea that just popped into my head though.

What if you mounted a magnet on the side of the Magstrike. You fire off a clip which has another smaller magnet in a carved out part of the bottom of the clip. Engineer it so that when the clip is fired off, you just need to give it a little knock, it falls to the side, and the magnet on the side of the gun grabs it. Thus forth allowing you to slam your second clip in immediately after.

Anyone get that explanation?

If you were to use either of those 2 in the links dont use the second ones... holding metal signs to metal? slamming together?

CrazyIvanVI- I understood your explanation, and that sounds like a hell of a lot of work for a clip removal system, but good for you if you figure it out.

umdlancer- The reason I use hard drive magnets is because they are free at your local junkyard.

The entire point of this system is that you'll have a layer or two of fabric inbetween the magnet and the surface it would be attatching to. If you're really that concerned though, then you can always add a sheet of craft foam over one of the surfaces to dampen the impact even further.

And FYI, though it's a lot easier to slide the magnets apart than it is to pull them straight apart; you may still want to look into magnets with less pull force like the B881. I might be able to deal with magnet that has a 42-lb pull force, but you might find that you have difficulty working with them.

Im a pretty big guy, I think Ill be fine with 42 lbs of force.

edit: That link shows a smaller, cheaper magnet. Will it hold a sidearm?

I meant you might have difficulty finding an adhesive strong enough to hold it to the blaster. It goes without saying that hot glue won't work.

edit: The benefit of getting smaller, cheaper magnets is that you can buy more of them for the same price, and stack them in various configurations if they're not individually strong enough to do the job.

For example, I can lift a standard trade paperback novel by its cover using 12x 1/4" dia x 1/16" thickness disc magnets (6 on on either side of the cover), even though individually they're far too weak to do so.

Ill order some of these tommorrow when my parents are up so I can pay with a credit card... This will be really useful AND you can also store guns and clips easier on walls and such by using magnets.

just curious... What sort of adhesive would you use?

I'd experiment with high-strength epoxy and superglue, both of which work for the small rare earth magnets I used in my WH40k models. Avoid JB Weld or anything else that has metallic filings in the resin, as the magnet will tend to pull the resin away from the joint around itself.
