Okay, so I went to the Target store near me today and I was looking at the various Nerf weapons there and I remembered someone saying something about a Disk Shot gun being a crappy side arm and someone else swearing by their NF for everything, so I'd like to know what would be worth buying as a sidearm and the recommended fix to make it worth while in a Nerf Outing, as there's one in MN coming up VERY soon and I'm hoping to attend. (btw, if anyone lives in Maple Grove, Osseo, Brooklyn Park, or Brooklyn Center MN, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PM because I'd like to hitch a ride)

To be very clear on the matter of the NF, I own one, but I'm not entirely impressed by it. It's about as reliable as my SS1, but my SS1 gets WAAAY more power and is actually A LOT quieter. Currently my NF only carries an AR mod.

My NF is only AR modded too, but it's loud as hell. So what? If you're close enough to be using your sidearm, loudness doesn't matter.

Just glue some craft foam to the end of the plunger head and shove fbr in empty spaces... It makes it MUCH quieter but still sorta loud.

In the NF, one of the loudness factors is the spring. It is a lot shorter than the plunger rod, so it rattles around, and makes noise, especially when it fires. I put a TTG spring in mine, gets near idential ranges, and it is a lot quiter. And the TTG spring is a lot thinner ID than the NF spring, so that might also help. I would say get a TTG, but they are not always reliable. And yes, craft foam on the plunger head and FBR in the dead space in the shell also decreases sound a lot.

It's not like that. I put lube on it and its the same. Its just stuck. And when I cock it back it goes farther back then usual. Also I push as hard as I can and it wont go back in. I've tried the methods and they wont work. Also pics are up.

TTGs by far have the best range performance of all currently available pistols, but honestly it's all personal preference, if you like your Ss1 go with it. Hell, I carry 4 sidearms, you just gotta find your thang.

It's also worth mentioning that I think the new Edition TTGs are amazing: the plunger draw pulls back and locks in place, with no additional give, unlike it's mega shooting predecessor, which in turn makes it shoot much further.

Tech Target's are defiantly my favorite springer pistol. But they usually break easily (plunger head, and plunger).

I like a Splitfire, but its hard to shoot 1 shot at a time in a war while aiming. SS2's are defiantly my favorite. They get 2k+ ranges, and can have a great ROF (turret, coupler, revolver turret like the maxshot, etc...). They just need to be pumped fast.

My NF isn't silenced at all, it has a BBB spring and increased plunger draw. Still, I don't actually hear the plunger head hitting the end of the plunger tube/PVC coupler. All I hear is the dart's *thwoomp* when it leaves the barrel. It's a lot quieter than 80% of NFs out there and hits much higher ranges than a lot of them as well.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. A good nerf gun is like a good woman. It shouldn't require extra lubrication.

Bullshit you have a BBB spring in your NF. That thing will break after 5 shots.

It's held up since January with few problems. The spring is a bit chopped down and there's a couple steel washers behind for reinforcement and extra compression.

If you want I could get a picture...

I like to use a side arm that makes up for as weakness that my primary has. When I used my Big Blast I used my tri-barrel Secret Shot 1 as a side arm because of it's fast ROF. I'll use my increased plunger draw NF when I use something like a Magstrike.

I love NF's mine is really good (65-70 ft) without barrel mod but with these mods:
-Added a Crossfire spring
-Removed both AR's
-Double O-Ring lubed
-Vinyl dyed inside the barrel and now it has a tighter fit with stock darts.

Nitefinders and Disk Shots have identical internals. Search around for Badger's evaluation where he successfully swapped the internals around. The only real difference between the two are the size and shape, and the handle feels different. Lock and Loads are similar, but they're much harder to find.
If you like your SS1, then stick with that. You don't need to start using a Nitefinder just because everyone else uses one.

I have never seen TTGs get so much praise. I have a stock one sitting in my room, I should probably get on that...

I haven't been on nerfhaven in a while so I thought I would somewhat say I am back with a new post. I found this topic to be a good one to do so. FIrst of all in my mind there is no such thing as a "best" weapon. WHile some may have better range, or accuracy it is really all about personal preferance. What might work for some may not be the best gun for someone else. For example, I used to be a proud owner of a crossbow and loved that gun alot, but after using it in several wars I found it did not suit me at all and that I was better off using my big blast so I used it instead even though the crossbow is considered the "better" gun. For your situation though I would try using the Nitefinder becuase its more popular amongst the players on the field, if it doesnt suit you then move on to a different weapon until you find one that suits YOUR style.

Oh, ok if it's cut down then I can believe that. BTW, I wasn't trying to sound like a jerk, I just didn't belive you.

For the record I HAVE SEEN an NF with a FULL BBB spring in it, unscrewed and together. It's held up for like 2 years, although the spring has started to feel weaker.

As for your question I would also recommend an NF, mainly because of their availability.

You'd want to remove the AR, change the spring (ACE #49 or a DS spring addition, I've heard other spring additions/replacement like the TTG spring work well), add another o-ring and increase seal (add e-tape under the orings) and do a barrel/coupler mod. You should be getting ATLEAST 50' flat, although I've gotten 65' consistently, but I don't want to get into a range debate.

I use a tek 6 spring with a nf spring or a ace #49 spring, it works wonders for me but that's just my opinion.

I'm assuming this outing is, well, outdoors, in which case i'd agree with most of the posters here that a well modded nf or tech target will serve you well... and I don't even mod.

If your outing happens to be indoors and in fairly close quarters, mavericks and recons (assuming you have a holster large enough for the latter) are very effective. Even a stock version of either one will do.

Two nicely modded NiteFinders. They serve me well and they shoot pretty good.

Okay, so I spent a few hours today suping up my SS1 and I'm pleased with the results. I need to get a spring and some vinyl tubing for it along with some plumbers goop, then I'll kick a massive amount of tail. If I can get a lift to Spano on the 28th, I'd like to give a few other side arms a try before I make up my mind entirely.

Im not sure if the debate is still up but I think the diskshots are a preety well side-arm. 6 shots, easily modified and very durable.

The debate is open as long as ppl have constructive things to say on the topic.

EDIT: If anyone knows where to get a more powerful spring for an SS1 (or at least know which Ace Hardware spring would be a proper replacement) lemme know.

an rf20 spring is great as a spring replacement.

I use my Disk Shot as a sidearm. Here are some specs:
  • Air restrictors removed
  • 9/16" brass barrel
  • Handyman spring replacement
  • Cut down
  • New industrial strength catch spring
  • Filled with FBR
I made a silenced NF by putting two layers of thick craft foam on the front of the plunger head and then I put a light piece of foam I had under the spring, around the plunger shaft. The only noticeable noise it makes is the plunger head hitting the end of the plunger tube. There is no spring rattling at all.

My personal new favorite is the SM750. It is definitely worth saving your pennies and then buying this one off someone. You can get 90ft ranges, it is small and compact, and takes all of 4 pumps to prime. Coupler'd it has a good ROF. I would abandon the DS/NF idea, and get this one. You won't be dissapointed.
