Okay, so I was doing a little playing around in one of my fave console games and I came up with a black and violet camo scheme. I played around more in MS Paint after that and this is the end result.

My question to you guys is how in the bleeding hell would I achieve this wonderful pattern? (If you guys need a larger image, I can slap one together)

fairly simple. paint the gun flat black. then mask off some triangles with some wide blue painters tape. then find yourself some purple acrylic paint and lay down the 2nd coat. Then clear coat it a couple times with matte coat.

Matte coat is the flat clea coat right? If so, where can you find that? I looked in Lowes and Walmart, but I cant find anything but shiny clear coat.

You can try a hobby shop or maybe a crafts store like Michaels. You might also check out your local auto shop supply store. they have a decent paint section.

Do you think it would be better to use Vinyl Dye instead of spray paint?

Yeah I was about to mention that. Vinyl Dye would probably be better for the base, especially black. It won't make your moving parts stick.

Also, matte coat isn't exactly a flat finish, but it's the closest you can get with a clear coat (without going super top of the line custom order stuff I think).

Yeah I would use either vinyl dye from Dupli-color or krylon fusions as the base coat.

You could also get some adhesive-backed decal paper, touch the image up a bit, maybe tile it, on Photoshop or this site, and print it out with a color printer and stick it on. It will likely have much better results, and will be tons quicker and easier.

Now that's a method I haven't seen on here yet. I don't have PS though. I think I'll just go buy some vinyl dye and paint it like that. I've done some spray painting before so this shouldn't be a problem.

Yes Vinyl Dye will give you a much more durable finish.

No, it's much more advisable to start with the lighter color for your base coat.

That won't be able to work around contours and will not be weather or skin proof.

The little critters of nature, they don't know that they're ugly. That's very funny, a fly marrying a bumble bee. I told you I'd shoot, but you didn't believe me. Why didn't you believe me?

Slug, if you wouldn't mind, could you post a link to a topic that has reference material for Vinyl Dye? I found it once before but I've failed to turn it up a second time.

EDIT1: nvm, I found it

EDIT2: Decided to enlarge the pattern some to give you guys a better idea of what I'm trying to achieve.

I've found that depending on the color of the base coat that using lighter colors will tend to allow the original color to show thru much easier. I think in his case the black base coat will give the puple a much better base and be easier for him to mask off then doing the purple base coat and then having to use a lot more tape and cut the triangles out of the tape. Also I don't think they have vinyl dye in purple. Or at least I've not seen it on any shelf. Krylon doesn't make that shade of purple in fusions so to lay that as a primary layer he would be taking a great chance of the paint chipping thus making the whole thing look like chit. At least with the black VD base even if the top purple layer takes a beating and gets some chips there will still be a nice coat of black under it.

Auto Zone and Advance Auto Parts tend to have them - auto parts stores are probably your best bet.

I'd use vinyl dye and blue painter's tape.

Can I ask a serious question? Why would you paint a nerf gun to look like Dino from the Flintstones? He wasn't really that great of a character.

*laughs* I wasn't even thinking about Dino, I was actually thinking about a variation of a Megatron Decpticon toy I once owned. And if I recall correctly, only Dino's butt was purple with black speckles. Still, I think it's a pretty cool camo pattern. I'll try to post pictures when I finish it.

I decided not to integrate my front gun into the LS's body, so I need some advice for filling the gaping hole left over by removal of the bipod and the rest of the stuff down there. I was thinking of using plexiglass or maybe some sheet form PTEG, what do you guys think? I need something that will take Vinyl Dye.

Some this acrylic sheet will work great for doing that. I think its the .30 mm stuff that I use. and can cut with strong scissors.

just make sure to puck up some weldon 16 to adhear it to the gun. anything else will probably not hold well.
