Alrighty. My dad is giving me money for every stump I remove so I plan on buying some nerf guns. What is the best way to go at removing a stump without any power tools? Thanks ahead of time!

It depends on what size of stump you're talking about. Your best bet would usually be to go in, dig around the base and use a pickaxe or a mattox to get at the roots. Anything that has a good root system is going to be a certified bitch to remove. Once you break up the roots enough, it's easiest to wrap a chain around it and pull it out with a truck. Those things are usually in there really good. Good luck.

I think you should tie some rockets and raging bulls to the stump, and light off the rockets with the bulls next to them to pull the stump up, while scaring the bulls and causing them to run away, thus ripping out the stump, totally hassle free. Or you could hire some cyborgs and...

You know what, just loosen it with a shovel and pull it out with a car.

Stump removal? Easy. Use a chunk of C4; it removes stumps just like that!

Don't try that.

Once you've broken up the roots as suggested by wax, you could probably use a shovel or something long to gain some leverage by shoving it under the stump and pushing it out. Just be careful, as it's quite possible that the shovel will go flying if it becomes loose or the stump comes out. That is, if you don't have access to a truck to yank the trunk out.

Well defiantly don't tie a chain to the stump and tie the other end to the bumper of your truck and drive really fast...

Haha, yeah, the bumper's not exactly the most securely attached component of a car. Definitely don't do that, you'll just end up with a bumper sitting next to your stump and a pissed off father.

Slave wages.
It's a ton of work to get the stump of anything other than a sapling out of the ground without some actual construction equipment.
Companies that do yardwork & landscaping services will charge $100 per stump. Easier methods require accelerating the rotting process over several weeks.

Just use tree stump remover. To use, mix with powdered charcoal and sulfur and fill a hole in the center of the stump with it. The whole family can watch the fireworks. At least, I think that's how you use it.

(No, don't actually do that.)

Ok, having to have removed some stumps myself, do like most of the guys say, but instead of tying it to a car, if you have a come-along, like the ones you use to lift a car engine outta the frame, use that. You just gotta wrap some tie straps around a thick enough tree, hook them up to the come along at one end, and then wrap some chains around the stump and hook the chains to the other end of the come-along, works like a charm, and you don't have to use any harmful chemicals like the other guys suggest. If you can take pics of the stumps, I could tell you if my method would work or not....

Toilet paper is for your ass, not your nerf gun.
Try craft foam if you want to add cushioning to the handle.

Not to get hung up on the details, but doesn't a car/truck count as a power tool in this scenario? Aside from that, I'd go with the pair of oxen, one of them will pull four times their own weight...cheaper and more legal than C4 too.

Use an axe to split the base of the stump like a pizza, then just work on removing the slices. It helps if the stumps are dried out, otherwise they won't split.

I dug 4 out of my backyard in 10th grade.

ps: google is your friend

Be a man! Use your hands!

Those are the two best pieces of advice I can agree with.

I can tell who actually does work hard with their hands, and whose idea of hard labor is taking out the trash.

I think your father is doing more than trying to pay you for chores. My 11-year old son doesn't pull out stumps, but he DOES haul bales of greenwaste to our composter, takes out the trash, breaks down cardboard boxes flat (sounds easy until you try breaking down 25-30 of them in 1/2 hour), and recycles aluminum and plastic containers on the property I manage and run. He's not strong by any means yet, but he's getting there!

I used my thigh as a guideline. If the stump is bigger than my thigh, I honestly find that my F-150 truck is the best way to pull it out. The bumper on the 150 is plenty strong enough to hold the chain (twin hooks plus trailer hitch), and you don't stomp the gas and try to yank it out. That'll probably lose your bumper (or kink it, at the very least). You use the torque and give it gas slowly and "rock" the stump out. And you still have to dig around the secondary roots; you can't hope to pull the stump out with the truck alon. With about six volunteers, we cleared out over 200 Hawaiian mesquite trees from an area the size of 1 1/2 football fields. We turned a forest into a play field, without heavy equipment.

Smaller than my thigh, or for saplings, I either have do dig it out, or if it's smaller, I have the best tool in the world for that. The Weed Wrench. Good workout, too. Pull the whole sapling out without digging.

Work hard. You'll be happy that you earned your money by more than begging for it.

Be a man! Use your dick!

fixed.

The idea here is to use the leverage and swing the hips; you might need to dig a small starter hole to wedge yourself underneath the main part of the stump at first.
You also may want to practice on a few smaller stumps in the back woods before attempting a full-size phallic de-stumping procedure; guaranteed, though, if you bring along a few of the lady-types (try to find some who aren't too shy) to the main event you'll never sleep alone as long as you live in that town.

If you're not feeling up to hooking up a car to the stump, a come-along works pretty well too. It's basically a ratchet and a lever, and I've used them to pull trees down before. (I like to use an axe, but I didn't want to deal with cutting it so it fell in a specific direction, so I used the come along to pull it in the direction it needed to go.)

Alice came to the fork in the road.
"Which road do I take?" she asked.
"Where do you want to go?" responded the Cheshire cat.
"I don't know," Alice answered.
"Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."
