First lets review.
1. Take off barrels and AR's fall out

2. Hot glue over the holes in the bottom of the barrels.

3. Hot glue over the Air Release Valve.

No for most of you your gun is now a very powerful side arm. But for the rest of you who have tried this and are still getting stock ranges, here is you problem.

I did this mod to my gun and like some of you it still only got 35ft. So I investigated. I scraped some paint off the guns air tank and noticed this

I know it might not look like much but believe it or not this gun has a second Air Release Valve, located in no other place but that screw itself. If you scrape the paint off of yours and pump it you will notice that after 21 pumps the red piece slightly moves. This doesn't happen with all SMDTG's but I do know it happens to some peoples.
So to fix this problem. Simply turn the screw 1 1/4 of a turn further in and then hot glue all around it.

Now your gun should shoot a lot better. Also to maximize the guns performance pump it 42 times. The tank blows at 45.

I'll have to try this. One of my SMDTGs is weaker than the other, and the weak one is modded (cpvc barrels, AR removal, I didn't plug the pump because it made it a bitch to pump). I'll try it on the bad one first, to make sure it works.

Try lubing your pump for starters; I just lubed mine and it made a huge difference.

Anyways, this explains why there was always that hissing noise when trying to get over 27 pumps.

Unfortunately I epoxied the hole in the trigger assembly so one of my Spideys' screw won't turn. PETG barreling them tonight.

Great find!

Other observations:

I have had at least two of my SMDTBs (from different sets, mind you) leak air slowly. I can pump them up fine, but after a minute or two the shots are significantly weaker than if I had fired immediately. If I leave them sit for a longer period of time, they won't fire at all or only the third barrel will fire.

Upon submerging the trigger in water to look for a leak, I found the leak to be coming from around the screw. I had considered taking the screw out altogether and covering the hole with epoxy, but I never got a chance to attempt it. Perhaps this, here, is the reason behind my troubles.

Also to maximize the guns performance pump it 42 times. The tank blows at 45.

Using Piney's method, eh?

Nice find! If people don't get in the high ranges after doing the simple mods, this will definently help them out.

I had almost given up on my set of SMDTGs when I read this. One gun leaked after about 10 pumps and the other still had abysmal ranges, even after plugging the OP valve and re-barreling it with PETG. I turn that screw a bit, goop it up, and bam! I am seeing way more power out of these things. Bravo.

OK, I'm quoting Lord of the Rings...I should probably stop posting.

Oh my gosh! You saved my SMDTG. I replaced my barrels with PETG and the darts didn't even leave the barrel. This really helped me alot. Thank You.

Doesn't this go in the modifications thread?

Nice mod by the way. Though try to get the pictures in your post not a link.

Actually to test the pump I broke one of my other ones. I got them on sale for 12 bucks a set, so I picked up a few. I just kept pumping it until the tank split open.
Like I said earlier I was in a rush so I just put it under "General Nerf". I guess it could be considered a modification though.
