Is it possible to make a Firefly shot gun by maybe gutting out the internals and putting a bigger plunger tube in and four barrels with a completely new trigger design. This is just an idea so far but perhaps it can be done?

Anyways, what you are proposing is a complete overhaul to a shitty gun, which would take more work than it would to buy something more powerful, like a BBB, and do a simple barrel mod.

As nerf turtle said, there really is no reason not to use a more powerful gun if you're just going to replace the entire plunger of a firefly to make a shotgun. Titans, big blasts, BBB's, hornets, lightin' blitz's...they all make better shotguns than a firefly would. If you really wanted to, you could integrate a powerful gun's internals into a FF shell, if you like the shell. It's just impractical and costly, so leave the FF the way it is.

The short answer to your question is yes. You can easily do it. The issue is just going to be making sure the catch/trigger work well, and that the plunger tube doesn't move around.

The fact that a Firefly isn't worth modding is enough justification to mod it.
