Ya there are a bunch of people that have "If you are a kid that listens to real music add this too your sig"
Rap music is just as powerful as rock & roll.
its street poetry to me and thats what it is it comes from areas that some of you wouldn't dare to dream of or go to.
How dare you people judge what "real music" is when you weren't even born when the classics were around.

I think all modern music is dead, Now people make music to make the green and thats about it.

BIG POST.

I was waiting for something like this to come up somewhere. I just had to tell someone. I think that all music on the radio is overplayed. All of it. Even if it is a song I like, it is overplayed. And all those kids that think rap sucks only think that because in the last decade rap has changed into the same shit over and over and over again. Every damn song has the following lyrics: ice, bling (kind of old but still there sometimes), grill, shorty, hot, cold, club, bud, etc. Every song. And most of the time they don't actually rhyme.

I believe very strongly that any rapper that came out after Eminem became famous with his shitty crap (the C is silent) sucks--Eminem sucks so much, he just doesn't deserve the fame he has. I don't even listen to the radio anymore...ever. If I'm in a car and the radio is on I turn on my PSP and listen to some music that has some real messages and real diversity and real originality.

But I would never claim that my choice of music is "real music" while other music isn't because that just doesn't make sense. All music is real, all genres have audiences, and if you don't like a genre you don't have to listen to it. But don't claim that all other genres aren't "real".

I like many genres of music but right now my favorite is horror-core rap (Three 6 Mafia) and gangsta rap (Ice Cube, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony). They all talk about the way it really is in the ghetto, how they were actually criminals, how they had to kill or be killed or see their friends killed, how the police only make it worse. It's all about life and death. And the lyrics aren't repetitive like today's rap. These rappers started just before '90 or just after and still have very high sales. Unfortunately, some of the shit coming from modern rappers is rubbing off on the old school rappers and they have been less original--but that'll happen after you've made a dozen albums anyways.

Notes on these three rapper/rap groups, T6M know their rhymes and are simply hard, Ice Cube is simply gangsta and can do anything (music, movies, books, anything), and Bone Thugs' voices alone would make good music but they go beyond that and make amazing music whether in a group or as solo artists. Bone Thugs can also make music for people who don't like violent lyrics.

I love Gorillaz too, I think that every one of there songs is completely different and original and that they deserve all the attention they get and deserve more than they have. I hope their third official album comes out soon.

And Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, an old school rapper who is part of Gorillaz and is Ice Cube's cousin, also knows his stuff. Deltron 3030 is the most creative album ever made.

Chanclas, I have a similar taste in rap. Not a bad list. I would add the following though:
Mobb Deep
Big Pun
Geto Boys
NWA
Canibus

I'm not big into rap, but I like some gangsta rap. Here's where everyone in this thread glares at me. Metal blows.

I dunno, I just don't like metal. Ironically, there are so many parallels between metal, and my favorite overall genre; punk. Both styles of music progressed in similar ways, and have subgenres that represent similar changes. They've even fused a bunch of times, mostly making crap, but on occasion something great. But enough about that, this isn't really the place for long musical rants.

I really appreciate simplicity in music. I think what makes modern music unappealing to some is that there is too much going on. Vocals have gone from yelling, to growling cookie monster guttural noises. Some genres even have computer generated vox now (like goregrind...don't even get me started on that shit). Guitars are now all down-tuned. I dunno. I guess my main qualm with music, or alternative/metal/punk music these days is that its trying to be heavier or more hardcore.

In my opinion, modern music slaps titles upon itself that don't really apply. Hardcore used to be fast, hard, and above all simple. Now it's this drop-d, double bass pedal, growling shit. I'm kind of ranting. Fuck, I dunno, it's 4 am, this probably lacks some coherency.

Yeah, NWA was kind of implied when I mentioned Ice Cube since he wrote a vast majority of their songs (10 out of 13 in Straight out of Compton). I have that CD but haven't bothered buying any others. But I got the dis CDs that they made when they broke up (Death Certificate-Ice Cube and It's On-Eazy E), I just don't have the Dre Day yet. Fucking awesome albums they were.

My brother listens to all the modern rap and likes to play it loud which can always start a fight because he knows I don't want to hear it. And then he calls my music crap.

Those other rappers you listed, I've heard of them but haven't listened to any of them. Might try them in the future but I've spent too much money on Ice Cube CDs lately.

Are you fucking serious?

I was waiting for something like this to come up somewhere. I just had to tell someone. I think that all music on the radio is overplayed. All of it. Even if it is a song I like, it is overplayed.

Are you trying to sound cool because you hate FM radio? What does this prove?

And all those kids that think rap sucks only think that because in the last decade rap has changed into the same shit over and over and over again. Every damn song has the following lyrics: ice, bling (kind of old but still there sometimes), grill, shorty, hot, cold, club, bud, etc. Every song. And most of the time they don't actually rhyme.

Since when does "rap" have to rhyme?

Rapping (also known as emceeing, MCing, spitting, or just rhyming) is the rhythmic spoken delivery of rhymes, wordplay, and poetry, one of the elements of hip hop music and culture.

Granted, rhyming may be the first thing listed there, but it's not the only thing listed, is it?

I believe very strongly that any rapper that came out after Eminem became famous with his shitty crap (the C is silent) sucks--Eminem sucks so much, he just doesn't deserve the fame he has. I don't even listen to the radio anymore...ever. If I'm in a car and the radio is on I turn on my PSP and listen to some music that has some real messages and real diversity and real originality.

How can you possibly make such a claim? No rapper that started rapping after Eminem got famous is worthwhile? Kanye West? I don't believe he sings about "ice ( I have no idea what this is? ), bling, grill, shorty, hot, cold, club, bud" and when he does, it certainly isn't traditional bullshit. And if I'm not mistaken, he started a few years after Eminem. Granted, I'm not familiar with the rap scene at all, but if you're gonna tell me that no one post-Emimen has any merit, I'm gonna say you're a blind fucking retard.

So rapping about murder is cool, but not weed? Where is your fucking logic at? Let's take a glance at some of your rappers who know how "it really is in the ghetto."

Three 6 Mafia: been in the Billboard top 100 over 6 times with over 3 RIAA Platinum certifications
Ice Cube: never not been in the Billboard top 20 - over 6 RIAA Platinums
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony: never not been in the Billboard top 15 - over 10 RIAA Platinums

Here's where I stopped and smacked myself wondering how anyone could be so hypocritical. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but last time I checked, Billboard ratings have quite a bit to do with airplay. So, does that mean when you hear Ice Cube on the radio in your mom's car that you turn your PSP to Bone Thugs and feel less like a conformist? Or can you admit that your claims about overplayed music were all stupid and complete wastes of bandwidth and space?

Notes on these three rapper/rap groups, T6M know their rhymes and are simply hard, Ice Cube is simply gangsta and can do anything (music, movies, books, anything), and Bone Thugs' voices alone would make good music but they go beyond that and make amazing music whether in a group or as solo artists. Bone Thugs can also make music for people who don't like violent lyrics.

Again, what does that have anything to do with the point ( is it a point? ) that you're trying to make? These rappers are exceptions to your rules because their music has merit and they're talented?

I'm sorry, but I have to call bullshit on this whole goddamn post - not only is it redundant and hypocritical, but it makes you sound a hell of a lot like a teen who's trying a little too hard to rebel from pop culture.

</endRant>

And I bet you know just as much about metal as you seem to think the average American knows about rap, right? I really don't care what you listen to, but when you make claims such as you have and you're probably ignorant to just about every other genre, then you start to bother me.

And "serpent sni per" - what sort of artists do you think of when you say, "Metal blows." and "I just don't like metal."?

Chanclas, shut up, your making the people that like rap/hip-hop look stupid. The people you said were good are just as mainstream as eminem, and just as shitty for the most part. The Gorillaz are pretty good, but they aren't really rap/hip-hop.

I've never been a big fan of AC/DC I just never could appreciate there music, I also didn't really like the fanbase that went along with them. By fanbase I mean middle school children who believe that by listening and praising them, they feel like they truly know what classic rock is.

On the subject of my music, I listen to some rap, Atmosphere and the gorillaz are among my favorites. I also like devin the dude and del tha funkee homosapien as well. When it comes to all other music my personal favorites are Tool, APC, RATM, Sublime, Sparta, ATDI, and I've taken a recent shine to Morphine.

...Really? Do you know what popular culture is? So long as there is TV, radio, hell, even fucking Internet, there will be "pop culture." Pop culture is whatever is popular... so as long as there are brand names for generic items, the Billboard 200, YouTube, Abercrombie & Fitch, etc., there will most definitely be pop culture.

And how can you say something is obsolete and then later claim that you resent it? You resented it in the past? Or are you just throwing words around when you have no idea what they mean?

Have you never made an exaggerated claim to make a point? Bottom line is that rap has seeped into pop culture at a startling rate over the past decade, especially with respect to teens.

Granted, I'm not familiar with the rap scene at all, but if you're gonna tell me that no one post-Emimen has any merit, I'm gonna say you're a blind fucking retard.

I really meant to say that most suck. Honestly, I didn't mean all. Ice is diamonds and if you don't know that then you aren't listening to the stuff I'm talking about and can't make a valid argument when you don't know the facts which means you should shut the fuck up. I mean that as nice as possible. You saidyourself you don't know the rap scene so how the hell could you be able to make an argument about it.

RAMBO-
So rapping about murder is cool, but not weed?

I never said that. I said they use the same lyrics all the time. Modern rappers are constantly leeching lyrics and beats from each other and calling it "screwed and chopped" (remixed).

RAMBO-
Let's take a glance at some of your rappers who know how "it really is in the ghetto."

Or can you admit that your claims about overplayed music were all stupid and complete wastes of bandwidth and space?

Slap yourself again because you're wrong. The Billboard is a list of the highest-selling music albums. Nothing to do with airplay. Overplayed songs aren't the only reason I don't listen to radio; censorship can really ruin a song that I like. If you listen to the "dirty" and "clean" versions of any rap song you will either laugh or be angry about how shitty the "clean" radio-edited version is. This is a good reason for me to ignore an Ice Cube song on the radio to listen to my PSP. My "claims" are true. If you listen to a rap station and count the times you hear each song you are bound to count up to four in a single day. Your argument is a waste of bandwidth and space.

RAMBO-
-Chanclas-
Notes on these three rapper/rap groups, T6M know their rhymes and are simply hard, Ice Cube is simply gangsta and can do anything (music, movies, books, anything), and Bone Thugs' voices alone would make good music but they go beyond that and make amazing music whether in a group or as solo artists. Bone Thugs can also make music for people who don't like violent lyrics.

Again, what does that have anything to do with the point ( is it a point? ) that you're trying to make?

These notes are reasons for someone else to at least try their music.

RAMBO-
These rappers are exceptions to your rules because their music has merit and they're talented?

Is this really supposed to be an argument? If a rapper is talented why wouldn't they be an exception to my opinion that most modern rap is talentless.

RAMBO-
I'm sorry, but I have to call bullshit on this whole goddamn post - not only is it redundant and hypocritical, but it makes you sound a hell of a lot like a teen who's trying a little too hard to rebel from pop culture.

I don't like modern culture, sure, but that has nothing to do with my post. I'm not a rebel because so-called "rebels" are those kids who dress emo and punk and I just don't like that shit. I wasn't hypocritical in any part of my post. You were hypocritical when you tried to act like you knew all about rap and then said you don't know the rap scene--and you did it in the same paragraph.

But I don't want an argument so drop it. I know rap, you don't.

Anyways, back to the topic...

I'm ashamed that I forgot the rapper that came from my hometown, Kansas City, Missouri. His name is Tech N9ne and he is fucking awesome. He recently released the 2 disc Killer album (play on Michael Jackson's Thriller) and it might be his last which makes me sad. He is one of the fastest rappers and he doesn't even try to be.

Try a song...

Stamina and Sinister Tech-from Anghellic album
Killer-unreleased track from Killer album

And I'd like to share this song...just the intro part, I don't care for the outro. If you click the link, you'll see it's from a show called Elfen Lied which is my favorite anime out of the few that I'd watch. Beware, the show has nudity and violence. But it really is amazing.

Finally, I'm not embarrassed to say that I love Dido's music. She just has such a beautiful voice.

Try a song...

Thank You
White Flag

EDIT: I had to put quotes in bold because the quote markers weren't working for me. And the italic part is a quote within a quote.

I have a very weird taste in music.

Anything from Marvin Gaye, to Confide, to Taking Back Sunday, to Fergie.

But right now, I'm listening to:

Jimi Hendrix: Newport live show (ripped from my dad's dvd)
Sky Eats Airplane: New CD, recommended to me by someone at the mall.
Mia: Paper airplanes. As much as I hate the lyrics, the songs cool.
Nine Inch Nails: 1,000,000. From The Slip, free CD on their website.
Chiodos: Everything
Kanye West: The Glory
and
Less Than Jake: Live at Minneapolis

Sigh, here we go again.

Do you really want to listen to music where they ramble on about the same stuff over and over without rhyming?

What other music rhymes? I don't listen to catchy bullshit that rhymes... and the lyrics certainly are not rambling.

I really meant to say that most suck. Honestly, I didn't mean all. Believe me, I've heard enough rap to know that I don't really like most of it and just cos I don't know ice means diamonds doesn't mean I should shut the fuck up. Your little rapping buddies are generally incoherent both in sentence composition as well as enunciation, so even if I did hear the word ice, I probably wouldn't know what context it was being used in.

Where have I really made an argument about the rap scene except where I called you out for saying there's nobody good post-Eminem?

I never said that. I said they use the same lyrics all the time. Modern rappers are constantly leeching lyrics and beats from each other and calling it "screwed and chopped" (remixed).

Okay? I don't deny this. I don't, however, think that it's necessarily a reason to shun a band an artist for all eternity... after all there's only a certain number of things that can be sung about. Are you gonna start complaining that there are two few plotlines in movies next?

Well, sir, I have a different Wiki article saying that airplay is a factor. I realize that this is the Hot 100 or whatever, but I was referring to Billboard in general. Plus - do you really think that if an artist is selling THAT many albums that they're not going to be overplayed on the radio?

Why does a song need to be censored? I'm not saying you shouldn't curse, but if the song DEPENDS ON SWEARING then the artist is doing something wrong (Exhibit A). And, yeah, my argument is a waste of bandwidth, but at least it has a reasonable foundation - not someone rambling about popular songs being overplayed.

Is this really supposed to be an argument? If a rapper is talented why wouldn't they be an exception to my opinion that most modern rap is talentless.

I was saying that they were an exception to your statement that you shouldn't listen to the radio.

LOL - you think that a rebel by definition dresses emo and/or punk? Those are, again, kids who are trying to rebel - if you need to rebel physically rather than intellectually, you're doing something wrong. And yes, by stating that you won't listen to popular music that YOU LIKE just because it's on the radio is hypocritical. Perhaps it's not quite as bad if you argue that censorship is bad, but still, see Exhibit A.

But I don't want an argument so drop it. I know rap, you don't.

Once again, I'm really not arguing about rap, just this bullshit you're spewing. I wouldn't argue about any particular rapper's intents, lyrics, whatever mainly because I'd get mad if most of the people I know tried to argue anything about metal.

Tech N9ne actually isn't bad - I ended up at one of his shows for a bit once and it was pretty crazy.

One man's music is always going to be another man's disaster.

That said, my favorite kind of music comes in the form of a Chevrolet 350 LT-1, solid lifter camshaft, headers and Flowmasters.
