A SNAP Review

Posted Image
As some of you may know Carbon recently started selling SNAPs. I first had the face to see one last summer when Carbon came up to Minnesota. The SNAP was quite formidable, and worked incredibly well for Carbon all day. So when SNAPs went on sale I thought I would get one, not only for using it, but also to having something on hand to base my future homemades off of. I first had the chance to use it at the Minnesota Spring Break Nerf War, temperatures were a little cold, causing a less than perfect fit between my darts and barrels, but other than that testing conditions were perfect.
Performance:
Posted Image
Range
During MNSBW, Ryan and I were just goofing of firing some crazy angled shots (read: not war practical). He was using a Big Blast, and I was using the SNAP. Bother were firing quite far, but to my surprise, the SNAP was only a little bit behind. The SNAP is capable of hitting someone at about 80’ out, so that would put the maximum range out over 100’. I was using a 12” PETG barrel nested in some PVC it seemed to fit the SNAP perfectly. The SNAP has more than enough range, with a reasonable plunger pull, making it, at least range-wise, a worthy primary.

Consistency
Incredibly consistent. Any lack in consistency was from cold weather affecting the dart-barrel relationship. Even then it still performed very well.
Rate of Fire
Reloading ROF- It gets the same rate of fire as any blaster with a ½” PVC coupler. I was only using a single barrel (since my staggered barrel set up broke), but with a staggered barrel set up it would be a bit faster.
Priming- the spring is a bit strong, and the key ring starts to hurt after awhile, but it’s not too bad. It’s easier to prime than my Big Bad Bow with a spring replacement. One of the best things about the SNAP is that you can change almost everything with little to no effect of performance. You could very easily add a CPVC t fitting, or something else, to make priming more comfortable.
Total Performance Rating: 4 out of 5
Comfort:
Posted Image
The SNAP is very comfortable. There are two issues I found. The key ring on the charging handle was one problem. It is not much of a problem, and it is easily replaceable, it just gets a little sore after a day of use. The other issue is even less of a problem than the key ring. I found the trigger to be a little sharp on some corners so I just added a little craft foam on the trigger and it cleared up that problem immediately, you could also just sand down the edges of the angle iron.
Total Comfort Rating: 3 out of 5
Reliability/Durability:
The SNAP is very durable. It feels very solid and nothing feels weak or like it could break. The only durability problem I foresee is a need to replace the catch-face eventually, but I’m am not sure how long it will last before I need to replace it.
Legality:
Performance-wise I see no need to ban the SNAP, but there is the common rule on the coast of no homemades on the coasts, so it remains to be seen whether the SNAP would be legal in a “major” war.
Potential:
Posted Image
The SNAP has tons of potential. It can be entirely held together with screws making everything replaceable and upgradeable, if needed. The only thing it can’t do is hold integrations, although I’m sure even that is possible if I, or Carbon, thought about it a little harder. Performance is something else that can’t really be upgraded, but it puts out plenty of power as is.
Total Potential Rating: 3.5 out of 5

The SNAP has one of the best combination of price, performance, and ease to obtain is a war worthy primary, the only thing that comes close is a Big Blast. If you’ve got the resources, make one, or actually just buy one ;) (That’s the wink emoticon right?)

Look for a X-Bow vs. +Bow vs. SNAP review sometime this summer.

Nice! Could you try to integrate a clip/magazine system into it? ;)

After you said that the SNAP-1 is about the same as a crossbow performance-wise, I immediately thought I should make one. Also seeing you use it at MNSBW, especially when I was staring down it's barrel from about 5 feet away made it seem even better (I nearly shit myself). I think I will start building one, I am just a bit concerned about finding some of the parts. Like the spring, O-rings, screws, and washers. But if I can't, I will try to find something similar. And speaking of Big Blasts, I remember we were mentioning how we both wanted one at MNSBW, well I finally got one, and it works pretty well. I am just working on repairing/improving some things like the trigger and pump handle.
Thanks for the review, I will start mine soon!

Very nice review sam. I can vouch for this gun's amazing performance. The beauty of the gun is that it is so simple, yet very effective. I'm glad you were on my team the entire day at MNSBW.

I'm probably going to purchase one of these sooner or later.

And I'm also looking forward to the +bow vs. Xbow vs. Snap review. Your +bow should be arriving in the mail either this week or early next.

Like the spring, O-rings, screws, and washers.

Almost all of the parts for this gun can be found either at Home Depot or Ace Hardware. The only thing they probably don't have is the particular spring you are looking for. McMaster-Carr will do the trick.

Nice! Could you try to integrate a clip/magazine system into it?

You can use what ever barrel you want. The 1 1/4" to 1/2" bushing at the end allows that. I would recommend that you just use 12" of what ever barrel material that fits your darts and make a staggered barrel set up to keep it simple and fast.

I think I will start building one, I am just a bit concerned about finding some of the parts. Like the spring, O-rings, screws, and washers. But if I can't, I will try to find something similar.

I check my local hardware store (ACE on Grand Ave) and it had every piece needed to create a SNAP, except the aluminum plunger rod, but I wasn't looking all that hard either. Feel free to PM me, or Carbon, with questions.

EXACTLY!! Keep it simple stupid. I had exactly zero problems with the SNAP the entire war, almost all of my other blasters ran into some trouble at sometime of another.

The +Bow vs. Xbow vs. SNAP should actually be more accurate since it will be the summer and I'll have no problems with dart fit.

Thanks for the review, sam. I'm looking forward to a xbow/+bow/SNAP test this summer, as well.

The chargerod pull is definitely variable. I used CPVC tees on the SNAP-duo, and it works quite well. You can easily swap back and forth between them, too.

TeamGhille: This is the absolute basic SNAP design; you can vary it in many ways. I've used Crayola'd PVC, breech barrels, turrets, deoderant clips, hopper clips and inline clips. The air output is large enough that you can use a wide range of styles. Do a search and you can see how it's been varied.

As far as parts, I'd shy away from Home Depot. From what I've seen, the PVC they sell isn't quite shaped right. The endcaps they sell are the rounded end variety, which, from what I've heard, can tear the rubber washer (no o-rings used). I need to test and see if a rounded endcap would work for a rear catchface, though...I'd love to get away from needing to dremel that surface.

Ace definitely carries the proper spring (a #62), as does True Value (same number). Don't know about Homie D.

As far as integrations....you've got me thinking. I'm gonna be on the other end of the barrel of one of these this summer, so I better figure out a way to tip the scales in my favor.

Alright, I just got back from ACE with all my SNAP supplies. It is an interesting story. So I was dropped off by sister, who I knew wouldn't return to pick me up. I went inside and immediately I was asked if I needed help by almost every employee. Of course I did, so probably the oldest employee, was the one deemed to find all of my supplies. I kind of felt bad for him, but I wasn't in any rush so I just let him take his time. He finally asked me what I was building, so I said "Some sort of toy gun", I didn't want to raise any alarm. Later a younger employee, probably late teens early twenties, came and asked us what I was building. The old guy said "A gun!" in a weird way, then instantly the young guy said "Oh, a nerf gun?". I was amazed he figured it out so quickly. I said yeah, then he asked if I played assassins, I was like no, I go to wars. So when I finally checked out there was this, hot, but clueless girl at the counter. I felt bad for her, she had know idea what to do. The best part was, the total was $19.97! I pay in cash so it was fantastic to have a total like that. So I walked home and here I am.

I am going to get to work, and again, thanks for the help Sam and Carbon
