I'm jealous of you guys. I won't be able to drive for another two years or maybe four if my state passes a new legislation to make it so that you can't get your driver's license until you're 18. But, it'll be a worthwhile wait, I'm hoping to get my dad's Volvo S60 R, 300 Horsepower V6 Turbo, and a very nice magic blue paintjob.

EDIT: I feel like a jerk now, sorry, congratulations on your sister's wedding.

When speaking about a swallow, always make sure you know whether it is an African or European swallow. It is very important.

Ok, you're naming your Crossbows female names and you're naming your cars female names. Seriously guys, you should have more girls in your lives.
Always bring your sword to battle.

I pity the fool who attempts to use a single-shot blaster against me.

Thanks jwasko and frost vectron, for actually realizing the original (and more important) part of the thread.

Just to poke my nose into the second part a bit...

There is nothing wrong with a good well maintained Volvo. Reasoning: fast, luxurious, safe, and unexpected.

You'll eventually see me rolling into a nerf war in that.

I always wanted to test drive one of those RX-8's with their rotary engine.

But you can't smoke this with that RX-8

Ok so it's my dream car.

My dad has that car. It's a sweet ride. He started to teach me how to drive stick on it, but then the weather got bad.

Alice came to the fork in the road.
"Which road do I take?" she asked.
"Where do you want to go?" responded the Cheshire cat.
"I don't know," Alice answered.
"Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."

don't wanna make anyone jealous, but

360 degree sunroof
ultra lightweight frame
23" rims
custom decals
stitched leather interior
cupholder

and I don't wanna boast, but I can say with 100% confidence I've got the most efficient engine in the world.

I don't want to get technical, but the human body isn't a terribly efficient engine at all.

The human body burns calories just heating the air you breath, let alone riding a bike. Not to mention the "cup holder" isn't easily acessible.

I don't wanna get technical, but you drive a machine that emits poison into the air that we breathe.

My only byproduct is sweat, poop, and pee.

I burn 78 calories per minute cycling (Reebok Instructor News, Volume 5, Number 2, 1997)

1 gallon of gasoline contains 31,000 kilocalories. (31,000,000 calories)

source: http://health.howstu...om/calorie1.htm

Cars are wonderful, I love driving, but the fuel they burn is death and I drive as little as possible until there is a viable alternative for burning fuel.

You guys live in very very green areas and I know for a fact Indianapolis and New Hampshire don't issue countywide smog alerts.

But enough thread derailing! if you want to argue cars vs bikes we can create a new thread.
HUZZAH to your sister  Wankel engines are the shit.

There's a difference between calories in food and that the body burns and what mechanical energy is in something. Food calories are 100 or 1000 times more the number stated in SI calorie units. I don't have my physics notes with me at the moment...

That may have been worded funny, let me know if you don't understand and I'll try to clear it up.

The fact still remains that smog / carbon emissions are a problem and while many of you don't care because you live in areas where smog is not a big deal, i live here;

and I dont like breathing poison so I'm actually doing something about it.

I didn't care about smog and air pollution until I went skydiving.

You do relize they have vehicles that use electricity, right? Slug has a mo-ped that uses elcectricity. Im sure its a lot easier than riding a bike not to mention the fuel efficence is way better.

Hmm, I guess it's time I post a link to the thread at Theopia about my future plans. This will most likely happen once we get some more efficient electrical motors and perhaps better belt transmissions.

That's true, but it's much more efficient.

You're burning kilocalories, not calories. In the united states, for some reason, we call kilocalories calories.

Look how many calories a car burns in a mile as compared to how many calories your body burns in a mile.

It takes say, two minutes to ride a mile on a bike, maybe three or four. We'll say three. A car, by division, could go 40 miles per gallon, give or take. And we'll factor in the fact that a car carries four people.

so
bike: 78*3=234

car: 31,000/40/4= 193.75

Plus the fact that a car is heated/cooled, blocks the wind, tends to protect you when you get hit by another car, and can carry things.

Aren't we getting a tad bit off topic?
This went from weddings, to cars/mopeds, then to kilocalories.
Even if it's pretty much inevitable on an internet forum, still...
It's kind of unnecessary.

Plus the fact that a car is heated/cooled, blocks the wind, tends to protect you when you get hit by another car, and can carry things.

Those are some pretty "ideal" scenarios. Most of my driving is "in town" with trips of around five miles at about 12mpg (my truck gets about 20-22mpg on the freeway). Very very very few cars are getting 40mpg. I'd say average is around 20. Also, just because a car can carry four people, doesn't mean it does. When's the last time you carpooled when you had to go to the store for milk? So, if you're getting 20mpg, you're burning 1550 kilocalories/mile. Biking, as you showed is 234 kilocalories/mile.
It all depends on how you define efficiency. If you look at energy in vs. energy out, sure a car will beat a human on bicycle. However, it is rare that a car is utilizing all of the energy output. That energy is wasted. While the car engine is much more efficient than a human body, the car isn't.

Another fun little tidbit...if you're worried about CO2 output, you're better off driving to the store than you are walking, because the energy required to make the food you need to replenish the calories you burned is so great that there is more CO2 output getting the food to you than if you just drove to the store and back and burned less calories, requiring less food.

I believe the human body on a bicycle gets the equivalent of 1000 mpg.

http://www.eating2.com/index.asp?ID=2

with a CO2 output of approx 32 lbs per 1000 miles traveled.
