So I was wondering if there was a way to look at a spring and know/tell if it is an upgraded one or not.
The spring in question is in a Longshot. The seller claims that he replaced the stock spring with an AR-15 spring. I am pretty sure the guy is full of it since he says he also removed the barrel posts on the gun. :) (for those that don't know, magazine fed nerf guns don't have barrel posts)
So, how would I look at the spring or measure it to tell if he is lying? Is the the AR-15 spring thicker, or tighter coiled, anything?
Thanks for the help guys.

By barrel posts you mean the peg in the middle of the barrel? Because the longshot DOES indeed have a barrel post. Also the AR-15 spring should be thicker and mabye darker due to oxidation.

Silly, the longshot has a barrelpost inside of it's bolt.

Also an AR15 spring will look very different from a stock LS spring.

Stock springs are almost always stainless steel, which is much shinier than the dull gray spring-tempered steel springs we usually replace them with.
The AR-15 spring fits tightly over the plunger rod (OD around 7/8"), the stock spring does not (OD around 1-1/4").
The AR-15 spring also has a much larger wire diameter (0.08" vs. 0.06").

The little critters of nature, they don't know that they're ugly. That's very funny, a fly marrying a bumble bee. I told you I'd shoot, but you didn't believe me. Why didn't you believe me?

I knew I could count on you to give empirical data. Thanks CS.

Good to know. I don't own one and my research on the gun never gave a barrel post as a part.

So with CaptainSlug's response this thread is closed. Please don't waste more bandwidth people.

Well, I only use real springs, so I can't really help you out.

All the Nerf stock ones, are very shiny steel aluminum, and very easy to compress. "Upgraded" springs are usually bigger gauged, look like its been in a 3rd world country, and are hard to fully compress. Also, some are made of zinc or another metal, aluminum isn't known to be very strong.

Oops.

Um, keef. You can't make a spring out of aluminum. It wouldn't last very long.
Trust me, they're stainless steel.
