I recently posted about the Photon Burst Power Blaster in the general Nerf forum. http://nerfhaven.com...showtopic=10845

Today I pulled out the clip and drilled out the Air restrictors. It was very simple and increased both range and accuracy.

The quick write-up:

Tools: Screwdriver, Drill, 1/8 to 5/32 inch size drill bit

First: Unscrew these screws and pull out the clip. You don't need to open the entire shell to get the clip out.

Next: Drill out the posts from the back of the clip.

You will end up with a lot of extra plastic inside the clip. It will take some time to remove it all. I used a small nail to help dig out the extra plastic. Once you get it all cleaned out it will look like this:

Posted Image

Put it all back together and you're finished.

Improved ranges by about 5ft (avg about 40ft) and I get much better accuracy(accurate to 25ft). This also allows me to use stefans(not well) and modified nerf darts. I still use the darts that came with it because it's too loose for the stefans. Future mods will focus on making the clip removable and getting a new barrel material in there so the stefans will be more effective.

Comments and Questions are encouraged.

The clip looks too shallow for Taggers to work.
Have you cut them down at all, or do they fit?

You need to cut off about half an inch from stock Nerf darts for them to fit in the clip.

Is that seriously a commercial for Lipozine in the backround?

Yeah, the stock darts are very odd.

I think they have a size comparison in the first thread.

This is definitely useful.

Is that seriously a wasted post?

Anyways...

Have you thought of putting brass or petg in the barrels to use Stefans?

Yoikes, the plunger seems small, hopefully a spring replacement can help eventually, this could be a good gun for integrating (adding another gun where the plunger would be.

Thanks for the positive feedback.

The darts it comes with are smaller than stock darts. I did put a comparison pic in the original thread.
Internal pics are also in the original thread.

It probably is a lipozene commercial in the background. What the hell does that matter? you think I'm going to wait for the commercial to change before I take the picture?

The plunger is rather small, but it comes with a solid spring that helps make up for it.

I am trying to find a barrel material that I will be able to nest in the clip. If I can't find something to nest then I will have to carve out the clip and put in cpvc or brass. I've been thinking about getting some PETG because it has a great look and everyone who uses it swears by it.

17/32" Brass fits really well in the clip, just a little glue and they're in.

The plunger is pretty small. Here it is compared to a AA battery.

I'm in the process of doing something totally different to this gun. Hopefully I'll have it up by this weekend.

Awesome, I can't wait to see a write-up. Looks like I'm going brass shopping this weekend.

Glad to see someone else has picked up this gun. Did you find it's stock performance as surprising as I did?

Haha, yeah I did. It's also very accurate ...

I was surprised they had so many in stock. There were about 8 of them.

Okay, so my local TRU got these in yesterday, so I went out and bought one. I like it a lot! I must apologize, though... I was too busy having fun to take pictures of the hacks I'm about to describe.

From the very beginning I was disappointed with the strangely short darts. Especially seeing as how the clip is physically long enough for the full size stock darts to fit. So I fixed that problem. I also disliked how much smaller the air ports (in the clip) were than the exit port in the plunger tube. This is an obvious air restriction, so I fixed that too.

I began by drilling through the back of the ports and the air restrictors with a 1/4" drill bit. This mod by itself makes this gun great, especially if you plan on using shorter than stock length stefans.

If you aren't interested in doing a LOT more work to in order to facilitate usage of stock length darts, then skip the next part.

Then I flipped the clip over and drilled through the tubes with a 9/16" drill bit, completely removing the air restrictor crap in the back in one nice step. Well, at least it was SUPPOSED to work like that, and might, theoretically. What I ended up having to do was to CAREFULLY slice the seam around the back plate of the clip with a razor blade. Once I got it started, it was pretty easy. What I found was the remaining pieces of mangled springs and plastic from the air restrictors. They were easily removed once the plate was off, and this nets us just enough depth to allow full length stock darts. The barrels are all one piece of plastic molded together in a row, which just slides in to the clip frame assembly in the front. I drilled through each barrel with the 9/16" bit, being careful to skip every other, due to heat build up. From here, I cut sections of 9/16" PETG (that I was lucky enough to find at the only exotic fish shop in town [of course, this is AFTER I had already ordered some from OMC]) to fit the clip, and pressed them in to place. They are pretty tight as it is, so I didn't bother gluing them. Lastly, I reassembled the clip and glued (I used ABS pipe glue) the back plate at the original seam that I cut. Care MUST be taken to avoid getting excess adhesive on the outside of the clip. It's not a big deal except for the side with the tabs for the advancement mechanism which are all along one side near that seam. I was a little messy, and had to spend extra time cleaning the tabs so the clip would advance normally and the plunger would cock.

Posted Image

Last task, removable clip! I decided to modify the gun, rather than the clip. It seemed easier. Basically, I just cut extra notches on the frame to allow the top and bottom tabs to slide in. No big deal. Then, I just reassembled it.

Posted Image

I only shot a few darts, because it's cold. They were all stock taggers.

1. 51'
2. 54'
3. 56'
4. 61'

I'll do some more later and confirm. Keep in mind that I haven't modified the spring or plunger in any way.

EDIT: I tested all of the other styles of darts I have at my disposal, and came to the conclusion that the accuracy varies greatly between the different darts and the different positions in the clip. But they are ALL better than the originals. The standard micro darts seem to be consistently 10 or so feet short of the taggers. The other brands are usually shorter, except for the Buzz Bees.

Not very. A few pounds of pressure, applied with a razor blade. Carefully.

I am more of a single shot-long range person, but this is cool. 50-60 foot ranges? 10 shots? Good enough for me.

Too bad, I can't decide between this, or a Wild planet signal launcher. I'm leaning towards the signal launcher.

Also, I don't have TRU within 20-30 minutes of me

Well, considering you can have TWO Photons for the price of the signal launcher... And they each shoot eight darts... I guess it really depends upon what you are looking for. But between this gun, my brassed NF, and my CPVC'd Big Salvo, I think I have everything I could ask for.

I'm aware. I was looking for a comparison between it and something pretty standard, like a modded NF.

It's about the same as my NF, but not quite as consistent.

I added a couple pics of the additional grooves I cut in the clip section and of all examples of my stock darts in the clip.
