Okay here it is:

I want to stick some better springs in my guns and want to go to the hardware store and get them but my dad reckons theres no point going until I know what I'm getting . Any ideas and which aisles they'd be in?

My advice is that when you go, take the plunger assembly and the stock spring from your gun. This way, you can see exactly how the old spring functioned, and physically see how a new one would potentially fit.

I did the same thing you're trying to; I didn't go in looking for a specific spring, I just found ones of similar shapes and sizes to the stock, but that were harder to compress just using my hands. If you can't find one spring to do the job, just get two smaller ones of the same size. (That worked at least in the case of my Longshot, I don't know what you're trying to mod)

The springs will probably be located in the aisle with really general hardware materials. EG: Washers, bolts, hexnuts, etc. They usually are stored in a giant set of drawers, with each drawer having a picture of what's inside on it. If you still can't find them, ask the clerk where to find an "Extension Spring". These are stored in the exact same place as "regular springs", but have a more specific name.

Search a while to find what other people have used for your guns, or post your guns here and I'll give you some suggestions. The spings usually will be found in the door aisle.

Most people go to ace or home depot for springs, depending on what gun its for. Some people buy them online. Use the search function.

I've never been to a Home Depot that has anything other than extension springs. If you want to save your Dad having to drive you here and there you could just order exactly what you need from http://www.mcmaster.com

They have more springs than you can shake a stick at and shipping on items starts as low as $4.00.
For starters I would recommend part# 9637K26
It's $10.20 for 5 and you can use it in almost any gun, provided you cut it to the right length. To cut them you're going to need some hefty bolt cutters or a band saw.

I've found that Ace and True Value stores usually have springs hidden in the aisle with all the drawers of screws and washers. It's worth calling ahead, though.

Well, for the NF (I have 4 of them) the best spring is usually the Ace #49 spring, found in the hardware section.

Mine are usually in a drawer like Carbon said.

AS for a maverick I wouldn't do a spring replacement, because it will break without a crap-shit of reinforcements, and It still probably won't reach satisfying ranges.
