Bought this and two others at Wal-Mart today.

Armed. I don't know if you can see it, but it says "ARMED" on that tube sticking out.

All attachable pieces taken off. You can see the streamline for some kind of comparison.

Next to the Longshot.

Switched!

I don't know why I took this.

A few notes:
-The barrel extension seems to actually help, since the dart is loaded oh so very close to the pistol-form's exit. I assume that barrel mods will be a must for this sucker
-the clip is actually orange, but falls out a lot more easily
-the clip holder confused me for a while, and I couldn't get the clip out of it for about a minute, fearing I would break something.
-The stock is not particularly strong. Those two gray pieces are just plastic, so don't go sitting on them.
-I didn't take any picture of it, but there's an opening on the bottom of the grip that looks like an outlet for some kind of other extension that Nerf may be planning.
-This thing has 3 rails for loading sights and such.
-I also saw the new-fangled light-sight thing, but it was like eight bucks and this was twenty.
-I was going to say that there isn't a jam-clearer, but there is, and it's a flip-up thing that looks more slick.
-RANGES: now, I haven't got an actual range-measuring thing, but it would get an estimate of thirty feet, which was about what my Longshot got before I did anything to it.

I'll be getting into it tomorrow and posting internal shots, and other various shots that I didn't get.

EDIT: And yes, I did in fact have it four years ago.

ps: no, I didn't. I forgot to reset the camera time.

Didn't read that last bit before your edit. Thanks for putting combination photos up. They should have had a different color scheme, though, because the yellow does not mesh well with the blue.

Does the hole in the grip look large enough to put a Wii controller in? I seem to remember some one saying something about EA making a nerf game and that Nerf would make a blaster to go with it.

Nice.

Magwell picture?

I'm just curious if this is a Longshot stripped down to it's bare essentials. The price is certainly right!

Thank you for the pics...

Your picture dates, (the date you took the picture) are like from '03, tjhe recon wasn't released for 4 years after that!!! That has to be some glitch with your camera, right?

The dinky hole is about the size of a crayola.

I'd get the other pictures done tonight, but there are festivities. Plus, I'm tired as heck.

Also, the gun firing sounds like any other Nerf gun: very air-restricted. I'll be busting it open and getting shots of anything and everything that might be good to mod. Pine, I assume by "magwell" you mean the slot where the magazine goes. Is that right?

This will be done tomorrow, sometime. There will be presents to be opened, and breakfasts to be eaten.

I see this becoming yet another favorite in the LARPing circles. But personally I don't really have any use for it in my arsenal except as a potential experiment or indoor-only weapon.

Everyone that has one right now most likely lives on the West Coast. The guns are manufactured in China and introduced to store in California before the rest of the Nation. The delay from items hitting the shelves on the West Coast to them reaching the East cost can be as long as a month. The wait for items to reach stores in Canada can be even longer.

Most of these goods are shipped using cheap freight shipping such as rail, and then distributed via semi-truck from select distribution locations by the individual retailers planning to sell the items.

opening!

Posted Image
That little hole I mentioned. A dart fits in there snugly

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image
The magazine well

Posted Image
actual internals! I found it very simple, since the Longshot has a ton of little things more than this one does.

Posted Image
Closer

Posted Image
The bolt sled.

Posted Image
The AR is like two inches from the front of the gun's actual barrel and five from behind.

Posted Image
closer

Posted Image
That same little hole thing like the Longshot has. The line near it is where the AR is, for reference.

Posted Image
The part with the O-ring is glued on to the rest of the barrel, so may be able to be pried off. I wasn't courageous enough to try it out.

Posted Image
The cocking mechanism is screwed on from the inside, so don't go trying to pry it all the way off.

Posted Image
When loading, this little plastic comes up and blocks the dart from falling out.

Some more notes:
-The little booger took a long time to open. I just didn't figure it out for a while, but you have to detach the bolt sled from at least one side, then you can open it. The top part gave me some more problems to detach, but it opened without breaking anything.
-The air restricter is going to be a booger to take out. I can't imagine being able to dremel it out without taking off part of the tube, or sawing it in half, taking out the AR, then gluing it back together. The thing is seriously far inside the tube.

To whoever mentioned Nerf making a game for the Wii, thanks. I dreamed about it last night, and it baffled me in the dream.

Crap, this already gives me an idea. Considering that the bolt sled piece extends all of the way into the inverted plunger head you could simply drill out the inside of the whole thing and stick a long barrel in there.
You would have to ramrod the dart all the way to the back after priming though.

It's a christmas miracle!
I like the look of that plunger, though there seems to be a lot of dead space. What captain slug said would make it really good, but hurt the ROF. Still good either way though.

Don't want to shove balls in tight spaces. Trust me, bad idea.

Long piece of very hot rigid metal. I see no problems with the ARs.
We should stop calling out/making fun of/pissing GC off. He's actually contributed and is available for trade. He's a better than average member no doubt. Got your back Cole.

This toy looks almost as easy as modding a Nitefinder (Maybe not). How strong is that spring? Comparison with the LS spring? This recon looks like a giant scout to me.

I just attempted to mod it. Do yourself a favor and spend an extra $10 for a longshot. This thing is so hard to get to do a decent mod on. the spring is on the outside, so the only thing I can think to replace it is a longshot spring, and that isn't very good anyway. The restrictor is a pain in the rear to get to. I destroyed it trying to get to it, so I ruined that recon. I bet you can do some stuff to it, but a longshot just has 10 times the modding capability.

I just got mine today in Plano, Texas. The Walmarts out here are only getting a couple per store, so be sure to call ahead.

The spring is shorter, made of thinner wire, and has a smaller inner diameter than the Longshot spring. The LS spring is slightly too large to be used in the Recon. The AR-15 spring has too small an ID to be used. When the gun is cocked, there is about another 1/4" the spring could be pushed back until it completely stacks on itself.

The black piece the stock attaches to can be removed. It is not the spring perch. Also there is 1.25-1.5" extra space at the end of the plunger. This is odd considering all the early art for the gun indicated the plunger extending further back into the stock. I wouldn't bother cutting off that extra part however - since something sticks out the back, one can obviously rubber band the plunger for some added power.

ARs need to be drilled or melted out (I'm eager to try this, Cole). Alternately one could cut apart the breech/barrel and fashion a new one out of PVC.

Stock range was ~25 flat with streamlines. After knocking out the post and jamming the ARs open, I picked up a few feet. Weighted darts (CDTDs or Stefans) of course get more range accuracy. They were good for another few feet depending on how they were rammed down into the barrel.

Inverted plungers tend to have a lot of dead space - roughly equivalent to the plunger draw. Have people had success filling in this space in other guns? I used a straw and hot glue in my Mav to reduce the diameter of the dead space, but I felt I lost range.
