Earlier this school year, my clan applied to be a Registered Student Organization, which gives us official recognition from the college, opportunity for funding and expanded recruitment, and representation in the Student Government.

It's a pretty big deal.

I found out earlier tonight that we have been approved and are officially an RSO. I'm really excited about this and wanted to share the good news with the community.

Sweet that's cool man. Personally I wouldn't mind one here too, but there's no real good place to set up a place for a battle inside. Also it's really windy here... However there were one here, that would mean $200 per semester for the club... Who knows...

Congrats on the achievement man!

CAPS, you're in high school, right? You know how there are after school clubs. Well, basically, Cmdrmack turned his clan into a club similar to that, but at college, not high school. That means they could potentially get money from the school to buy new guns with.

Congratulations, this'll attract more people to this hobby. I'm quite excited, Nerf is getting more popular by the month. That means more Canadian Nerf wars!

This is a pretty big achievement in Nerf, is it not? Congrats, Mack (If I may call you Mack) on this feat. Now, does this mean that if I were to start a Nerf club, and multiple colleges, that they would start making official nerf wars? Like, college vs. college?

We used to do wars inside. Then I accidently shot a chandelier and broke it, the rest of the building is a fallout shelter, so I might have hit the only fragile thing there.

Now we just do outside wars. With Mobstacles, you can set up anything you like, customize the field to your preferences, that's what we do.

Help me out, Im slow (not really). What does that mean?

Sorry.

RSO stands for Registered Student Organization, having this status achieves a number of things:

1) We're formally recognized by the school, which means we are less likely to run into problems with Campus Security or the Police. That makes it safer and makes my life easier.
2) We get a voice in the Student Government Association Senate, which means that a group of Nerfers can actually affect the policy of a school, albeit to a small degree.
3) We're eligible for funding from the Student Government Association, which means we can ask for money, and possible (probably) get it. This money can be used for T-shirts, darts, food, and perhaps gas money to travel as a clan to other wars.

Funding? Does that mean you get paid to nerf?

Some people are lucky.

While it would be a lot of fun to go down in history as the first Professional Nerfer, or even Semi-Professional, that wouldn't be an ethical use of any funds we might get in my opinion.

What it does mean is that we have money that we can use as an organization for all sorts of things.

This is a pretty big achievement in Nerf, is it not? Congrats, Mack (If I may call you Mack) on this feat. Now, does this mean that if I were to start a Nerf club, and multiple colleges, that they would start making official nerf wars? Like, college vs. college?

Zaxby's clan in Georgia has plans to come up for a war or two next semester. I've already got a few contacts at Clemson University who have nerfed with us before, if they can start a clan, we might have inter-collegiate nerfing. I cannot imagine limiting it to just one school versus another though, if it's open to another school it's open to the NIC at large.

Congratulations! And no, school funding doesnt mean they will be paid to nerf... more like the school will pay to promote the club, organize nerf wars, and perhaps buy gear. Its a great thing that colleges have taken notice of our little hobby

So are you limited to spend money only on promoting your club, or can you use it to buy foam, PVC/PETG/Brass, blasters, tools, what have you?

I can use it to buy whatever I want, I just have to justify why I need the money to the SGA Senate.

They probably won't let me buy everybody a gun, but they will almost certainly give me money to buy everyone eye protection, and other communal items like modding tools and materials, perhaps even money to travel to other wars or buy lunch at wars we host.

I ask for money and tell them why they should give it to me. The worst thing they can do is say no.

Great!

We're currently working on the exact same thing here at the University of Cincinnati. We have all of our officers, our faculty advisor, our constitution and all of our policies drawn up, but we just haven't received official approval. Hopefully it will come within the next quarter.

I seriously don't doubt the possibility of having large intercollegiate wars, with at least a few of the guys from my area traveling with me. We took about 8 or so up to Cleveland (4 hour drive) and with the prospect of even more opponents, we could scrounge up more. If you ever decide to host a big war or get something organized, let me know and I'll get the ball rolling around here as well.

People don't realize it now, but there are actually a lot of groups at colleges that we don't know about. We're working hard down here spreading the word to the smaller schools around the area, and we've got a great number of people interested.

Props to you, sir.

As far as inter-collegiate Nerf Wars, you wouldn't necessarily have to limit it to just members of the college at all times.

For example:

You start the day, as many Nerf Wars do, at around 10am.

You play some "just for fun" games. These would include the two college clans/clubs, as well as any local nerfers and/or bystanders that want to join the fun.

Either just before or sometime after lunch, you have the "main event." This would only include the nerfers that are in the two college's clans/clubs. If you really wanted to get competitive (and the clubs are large enough), you could even limit it to say the best 10 nerfers from each college.

Then, you round out the day with some more general nerfing that anyone and everyone can participate in.

So in other words, you would only have a single match -- that would last at most an hour -- that excludes people.

Also, congratulations. I wish I could do something like this, but no one here Nerfs and I'm too "socially awkward" to try and start something.

Mind my language here but, that's fucking amazing! I'm currently waiting approval from my college (Conestoga in Kitchener, Ontario), for a registered nerf club. I think I'm going to be the first to do this in Canada though. I would be able to get a maximum funding of $300.00 per event I held. I think we must turn the idea of inter-college nerf wars into a reality. We're on the edge of turning nerf into something much larger than ever expected, and the more people that take this level of initiative to "Spread the NERF" the faster nerf will "snowball".

Awesome news Cmdrmack, you've just given me more hope that my club will get approved. I don't know about you, but I've already had meetings with the student life co-ordinators. I have their backing for even more funding and some major advertising. I'm hoping to be able to strike a deal with the local TRU or wal-mart to get a small discount on nerf items for members of the club (or possibly even them donating prizes), in exchange for advertising their stores inside the college.

Let's get a nerf club in every college and university!

That is pretty exciting news. I'm not so sure it's exactly a step toward national collegiate recognition, but it's definitely an excellent way to enjoy the game and spread it to a larger audience within your community. Honestly, it’s a pretty ballsy move. While I would have loved to participate in such a club at college, I think it may have interfered with my debauchery on several levels.
