I'm going to be playing in PSU's second game of HvZ next semester, and I'm planning on upgrading from my maverick to a longshot. I've got a few questions about some of the common mods:
  • The link I found for the commonly added spring no longer works. Is this the correct spring?
  • Dart tag darts don't work in clip fed guns, but they're cheaper than buying streamline refills, so I'll probably be using converted taggers. I saw several posts recommending using two bearings as weights, but I haven't been able to figure out what kind they're referring to. Could someone fill me in on what size/weight is recommended for the weights?
  • Modified guns will need to be approved for the game (for safety reasons or some crap like that). How much more painful is a CDTD at close range from a modded longshot than a streamline from a standard one?
  • Regarding the double clips that several people have made: All of the ones I've seen take the top of one clip and attach it to the bottom of another. Has anyone tried cutting one clip about halfway up and adding a custom built extension in the middle instead? It would presumably be harder to build, and I'd need to make my own spring, but it would save me 5 bucks. Is this doable?
Thanks for the help!

I'm not positive on that spring but it looks like it should work.

For the weights use 3/0 fishing weights and use hot glue or liquid nails to hold them in place.

A CDTD does not hurt that bad and out of a longshot it should not leave a big welt but it could leave a red mark for a short amount of time. Compared to a streamline it is probably painful but it isn't all that bad.

I don't really understand your last question. Maybe you could make a diagram for us or something.

1) I'm not sure about that spring, I know others have used it but you'd probably have to cut it down, remember to reinforce the BOLT SLED of your Longshot if you're doing a spring replacement.

2) Dart Taggers won't work well in a Longshot since the head is wider than the shaft. I would recommend converting them. However, you still want to keep them safe though, so you'll have to apply Captain Slug's method of weighting his darts outlined here: all you need is #8 washers and 3/8" or 1/2" felt discs, you'll have darts that are as safe as stock then also. I would also recommend putting straw in the hole of the dart for straighter, stiffer flight and better longevity.

3) CDTD's could hurt if you use a hot glue dome or other hard tip, but if you use a felt disc you should be fine.

4) I would generally avoid doing something like that as I imagine it would be a real pain. From what I've heard the Longshot spring clip system is fairly picky when you extend the clip, custom making an extension would probably require precise machining.

5) May I point you to this thread for all your Longshot modification needs: http://nerfhaven.com...?showtopic=7527

When speaking about a swallow, always make sure you know whether it is an African or European swallow. It is very important.

Here's a quick sketch. Top is the way I've seen on the forums, bottom is what I was asking about.

I'm thinking it would work, but probably take more than $5 of my time and not look very good. I might as well just buy an extra clip to chop up and save myself some effort.

If you could maintain the inside width, and build a spring, it would be fine.

But using a feed spring over that big of a distance without crushing darts might be difficult.

You might be able to make such an extension out of clear acrylic or plexiglass sheets if you can find the materials at a craft store. You'll need something with a similar thickness to the plastic walls of the clip, and tools to cut, shape and smooth it out. As for making your own spring, get some steel wire (pick an appropriate guage) bend into the shape desired, then heat in your oven for 10 minutes as hot as you can get it to go, then quench in cold water, that should help it retain it's shape and springiness. Good Luck.

1. That is the correct spring, you'll need to cut it down a bit though
2&3. Convert stock stock dart tag darts using Captain Slugs method, or make 2 inch stefans using CS's method. They will hurt less/ cause less damage
4. Just combine two magazines the normal way, if you want to hold more darts, either get more clips, or make your own spring and put it in the two combined magazine, which should allow for a few more darts.

Can anyone point me to a good source for brightly colored FBR? I'm assuming gray would be pretty easy to get at Lowes, but something orange or red would be easier to find after firing.

I (and I think Bags does too if I'm not mistaken) prefer the white foam from aloghomestore.com

Even though it is white, it was surprisingly easier to see on a grassy field littered with leaves than forsaken's red foam or grey foam (not being disrespectful toward his foam though, just my opinion). At the last war we were at one of my buddies even asked me where I got it so he could make some darts out of it. I highly recommend it.

Some people have mentioned problems with fishtailing darts. Is that likely to happen with just an extra spring? If so, would I be better off correcting it with an extended barrel (probably just ripping the one out of the front gun and using that) or by venting the internal barrel?

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the bolt sled reinforcement, but that will probably make more sense once I take the thing apart and have a good look at how it works. I don't have anywhere to store a disassembled longshot in my room without losing pieces, so I'm going to wait until I get my hands on all the parts before I start.

Longer barrel wont fix it. You'll just need heavier darts. Though a long enough barel can increase range and accuracy.

As ultra920 already said I wouldn't imagine that a longer barrel would prevent fishtailing that much. However I wouldn't think that the front gun's barrel as an extension would help either, you'd be better off replacing the barrel. The Longshot has a "faux" barrel, shall we say, which just lowers accuracy and range because it is way too loose, the darts hit against the walls and rattle around when fired.

I have no clue if this will help but if you use stock darts try fillin in the hole in the tip with a tiny bit of glue. this should help the accuracy issue. If you put too much though, they will be offweight.

I seen a movie about that once.
