I don't really know if this counts as a homemade, but I stuck a long piece of 1/2" PVC on a Poland Spring water bottle (the kind with the pull out caps) and stuck a dart in the back of the PVC. I stuck the gun under my arm and *WHAM!*. The dart (to my suprise) shot really far. I didn't do much with this, cause it was late, but the ranges were quite remarkable. I think, for all those on a low budget, this could be the next big shotgun (if you load in multible bullets). Try it out yourselves, and see what you thing!
Disclaimer: This idea seems so simple, that I apolagize if I've just restated something previously known to the rest of the forum.

Well I sure as hell have not thought of this before. Just make like 20 of them and pull them out of a holding bag similar to a quiver. That'd be kinda neat.

Heh. Sort of like a blowgun, but using a bellows instead. Pretty cool...what size is the bottle you were using? And how well did it refill after you fired (Did you need to plump it back up by hand)?

It was a medium size bottle. AFter shooting it, you take out the PVC, and blow in the bottle. It goes right back to original shape (almost). After around +70 shots, the bottles get really crunchy, so you might want to replace them, but the diffrence in distance is only around a couple feet.

I have a bunch of those bottles laying around my house. Now I have somthing to do with them besides recycle them. Great idea!

The best kind of bottle for this is a bottle that is made out of HDPE plastic. These bottles are used for dish detergent. The HDPE is marked at the bottom of the bottle, the color is translucent or a foggy clear. The reason these are better to use is that they return to their origonal shape after being hit which eliminates the need to inflate the bottle after every shot. You should get about 300 shots out of one bottle.
You should use a 24-28 oz bottle for best results

I saw his first demo, and it shot about 80'. the bottle was 20 oz. I think. either that or 24 oz. I was amazed by this. accuracy is potentially high, if you hold the pvc steady, and get used to how it fires. although air delivery is slow, it is a huge amount of air, so like nero said, you could shotgun it easily.

sniper25, that is brilliant. I just reallized what kind of bottle that is, and you're right. you'd have to get really big ones though. that or have pits steel to get the kind of air flow and air velocity needed to accelerate the dart for high ranges. also, because the dish soap bottles reinflate, they produce suction, thus pulling darts into the back of the barrel when you load them. that would decrease reloading time a lot.

although it would look awsome ompa, I think it would be a bit cumbersome to carry a lot of these. 10 of these would take up a huge amount of space.

I used 6 inches. But anything resonable length would probably be fine.

I think it would be cool to make 10 or so and put 3-4 darts in each one. Then line them up and run down the row, jumping on them. That would be a cool artillery type gun.

Is that a clip on the top of the barrel? It looks like one. If not what is it? Is there a certain way to attach the PVC to the bottle, or does it fit snugly?

yes that is a gravity feed clip on top. the bottle fit almost perfectly in a 1" coupler, I used e-tape to make it fit snug. it has an awesome ROF.

That aside, I gotta hand it to you..good job. Did the breech reduce your range by much? And is it possible to be accurate when you fire it Crazy Bagpipe Style?

Okay, innovative, creative, somewhat amusing.

But practical?

Would you really use that in a Nerf skirmish? I mean, NiteFinders cost $6.95 (in Hawaii), and can be modified with a Crayola marker. Dish soap costs $3.95 here...that's half the cost of a NF. (I know, you raided the trash for the bottle from your mom...okay).

I'm trying REALLY hard to imagine a Nerf clan equally equipped with Bottle guns. The "rapid fire" crazy-bagpipe-action like Carbon described. Whoah.

Very innovative. I'll stick with PVC and sprinkler valves.

I'd like to see a video of that thing firing and reloading off the breech.

Carbon the breech does not take any noticable distance off. Fireing it one at a time is accurate to a dagree. fireing it crazy bag pipe style has no use unless you are like 2 feet away. no it is not practical but is an intresting approach.

I used it in my last game. It's quite effective for making anyone with a high ROF but low range gun back off. Also, It's so COOL!!!!!! Anyway, it's more of an entertainment thing. I didn't get a real chance to use it, I just used it to threaten people, but I plan to really use it next war.
