So on a day off from school, one of my friends went to his mom's high school and brought home their photogates. Photogates use infrared transmitters and receivers to track the velocity of objects that pass between them, in this case, nerf darts.

Muzzle velocity of a fully modded titan: 249 MPH!

While I let that sink in, here are velocities of other guns:
nite finder: 49 mph
SM5k: 192 mph

To answer any questions, testing was done with all sorts of darts(whistler, micro, stefan, etc.) and there was virtually no difference in speed at near-point blank range. Also, priming was done from 15-20 pumps and there was hardly any speed discrepency at so close, 249 mph was the maximum.
Obviously, the differences among darts/pumps become more conspicuous at greater ranges, but regardless, at ~50 ft, any given dart will be moving at least 200 mph. Kinda makes you think twice about...safety goggles?
I'll try hitting my friend up for greater ranged speeds/specific guns if anyone is interested, but i can't guarantee anything.
Any questions and I'll be happy to answer. -Jabs

Considering thats the speed many indoor paintball fields require you to use, I'm impressed and pleasantley suprised . If only their were a reliable way of makeing the ROF higher :(.

If a NF, which reaches ~70ft easily has a muzzle velocity of ~50 MPH, then a dart from any gun will reach that speed at that distance from its maximum range, because the only factor that increases range from a nerf gun is muzzle velocity (as long as the same darts are used). For example, a titan's shot will be going ~50MPH when it is ~70ft away from its max range of ~200ft, which is at 130ft. This proves that there is an exponential decrease in the rate of deceleration of a nerf projectile until it reaches 0MPH and has stopped moving, becuase if it was a steady rate of deceleration, the dart would be moving at ~50MPH at ~160ft instead of ~130ft. This basically translates to, "The faster the dart is moving, the faster it will slow down." Here's a graph I made to help show it visually.

The combined set is the data from both tests combined together.

I don't really know how this can help us mod better, but i thaught I should share it anyway.

I'm a little rusty on my maths at the moment and lazy, but that's besides the point, but what's that in fps? something like 190fps?

Tidge- Titan: 365.2 FPS.
NiteFinder: 71.87 FPS
SM5k: 281.6 FPS

That is a really interesting idea. It just goes to show why Titans and some SM5ks are usually banned at wars. Of course these velocities won't be enough for a dart to penetrate/lodge itself in the skin, but they will draw blood and they'd surely put an eye out.

The moral is: if you're pissed at someone, it's close to being inhumane to shoot them point-blank with a Titan.
