Recently I have been trying to thin down my arsenal and transition from a lot of lightly modded guns to a few heavily modded guns. When going through my guns I came across my AR removed Recon. I decided that it wasn’t worth keeping because of its poor range. That is when I got to thinking, maybe it’s inverted plunger could be used for good and maybe I could make a worthy primary out of it….I did.

First off, open your gun and take out this barrel piece.

Posted Image
Cut the piece as shown in the picture.

Posted Image
Insert a 4in piece of 1/2inCPVC and have 1 in. stick out of the side that had the piece cut off.

Posted Image
Wrap the piece of CPVC in electrical tape until it has an airtight fit in 1/2in SCH 20 PVC. Place an o-ring at the end that will seal the connection.

Posted Image
Remove this piece from the plunger, with a good pry, it should come out.

Posted Image
Now take a 2 1/4in long piece of 1/2in SCH 20 PVC and attach it to the end of the plunger as shown in the picture.

Posted Image
Attach the new plunger rod to the bolt sled by epoxying it. (Same picture I know.)

Posted Image
This is what the new internals look like. As you can see in the picture, the PVC slides over the CPVC and the electrical tape/o-ring creates and air-tight seal.

Posted Image
Before you put the internals in the gun, make sure you have removed all of the pieces shown above.

Posted Image
This is what the internals should look like in the gun.

The boltsled slides back to allow darts to be rear-loaded if necessary. The boltsled is slid back with a removable piece of metal that hooks into the hole that the normal priming handle goes into.

The breech open.

Posted Image
The breech closed.

The other way to load it, “front loaded” is my preferred way. You keep the breech closed and you just pull back the “armed” tube and load a dart in the front.
To do this,

Posted Image
Fasten a 1/2in CPVC t-coupler to the end of the priming rod. It primes and loads like a nitefinder.

Ranges for front loaded.
52 feet
56 feet
48 feet
46 feet
53 feet

Ranges for rear loaded
61 feet
65 feet
52 feet
63 feet
60 feet

As you can see, rear loaded stefans have the better range.

If you have any questions, feel free to comment.

Your breech loaded ranges are better than your front loaded ones ( obviously).
Based on my experiences it might be more worth while to load by breech.
Its always best to squeeze of a couple more feet.
Nice job. This looks like a good mod for me to try.

Can it still use the clip?

Im guessing no, He's basically just singling it. he would also need something to stop the dart , like a dart tooth. Which he does not have.

Its a cool mod to squeeze as much range as you can out of it. Try a Spring in stock mod like Oberon's or mine.

Then you'll get some very good ranges.

Good write up though,

No, it cannot use the clip.

Rather than pulling back the breech every time, I find that it is much easier to use a ram-rod to load the dart and to cock it like a niteinder.

Nova- I am going to eventually try your's or oberons.

durka durka- Let me know how it goes if you try it.

Put some bungees/bands in the t fitting and then you've got a beastly recon.

I will post a write-up on how to do internal banding.
Ranges with bands are:
68 feet
64 feet
74 feet
71 feet
58 feet

Because the clip can't be used, am considering sawing off the area where the clip loads. Any ideas for what gun would look good there? Perhaps a crossfire?

Could you resize that one picture? Thanks.

I don't think this is an overhaul, just singling it. I think you will definitely agree once I post up the next part in the next few days.

It might look a little like this:

Sorry for the inconvienent size but yet again, Imageshack got all pissy. Click on it for a larger view.

I think it would look cool, but it might not be much more effective than a NF, but cool otherwise.

I just finished a video of the gun firing. The gun is banded and is held flat (as you can see it is level with the roof.)

If you have any questions about the mod, feel free to ask.
