So, I'd like to have another war this year, and in accordance with my exceedingly public views on darts I'd like to avoid using darts with chunks of metal or hard plastic in them. This is that war.

When: Nov 3, 2012 starting 10 AM

Where: Yorkville, same location as cat 2&3

County Highway 1 (W Fox Rd.)
Yorkville, IL
GPS coordinates:
41.624088,-88.493586

Ammo: Expect to see a mix of rubber dome darts, BANS, putty-wrap darts, and stock ammo (especially taggers, I have a healthy stash). I also have a fairly large collection of balls/rockets/arrows, which I'll distribute on the field before the game starts. Marshmallows might be allowed, depending on how George feels about diabetic racoons. Since all of the homemade darts are somewhat experimental, you're not expected to bring your own. But, if you do, you win extra cool points.

If you have slugs, bring them anyways, and plan not to use them. Contingency plans are good.

Blasters: I may or may not have a way to measure blaster power at the war, but don't expect to use conspicuously powerful homemades or big-blasts and their ilk. I consider a well made +bow with a long barrel to be conspicuously powerful, but in most cases that's fixable by swapping in a shorter barrel.

That said, since putty-wrap darts are so remarkably well padded, and sometimes hopper well in overpowered blasters, I might make exceptions and mark overpowered blasters for putty-wrap darts only. This is partly dependent on how many putty-wrap darts are present at the war. And don't count on bringing putty wrap darts and an overpowered blaster to give you a range advantage--you'll do better with a lower powered blaster and rubber dome darts.

Global rules:

1. Eye protection covering your eyes from all angles is required. Normal eyeglasses usually fail to adequately protect from the sides. If you aren't wearing eye protection, you aren't playing.

2. A hit is defined as some legal projectile, fired from a player that is "alive" and wearing eye protection, strikes a player or a player's blaster.

3. Melee weapons can be used to block darts, but not large ammo. Anything larger than a tagger dart is large ammo.

4. Shields are allowed on a case-by-case basis, and only with the specific weapon that I approve it to be used with. Most melee/shield combos will be approved, few blaster/shield combos will be approved. Like swords, shields cannot block large ammo.

5. Darts must be fired from a blaster of some sort (I'm pretty flexible on the definition of "blaster" here--blowguns are fine) to be considered legal projectiles, but large ammo can be thrown.

6. When hit, players must acknowledge the hit (a wave or verbal acknowledgement works here), and promptly return to the respawn point. Players may pick up ammo if it's on the way back, but are expected to make a reasonable effort not to obstruct players on either team.

6a. There may be an "express" respawn point placed closer to the objective for players using stock ammo.

7. No deathmatch.

Gametypes:

Carpe Testiculum

VIP

Defend the Core

Ryan and I have hosted a few wars in the past, and even when we're well prepared (we're usually not), it's too much for us to take care of without creating downtime for everyone else. So, we're trying to split the responsibilities as much as possible.

I can go on the 27th or the 3, I just can't go on both. I will got to whichever has the most attendees. What do you mean by "warm up"? I will make sure the darts I made are there either day.

You already know this, but for the sake of other NH members knowing attendance, I will restate that I can only go the 27th. I will be in Indianapolis the following weekend, so I can't go on the 3rd.

I was under the impression that you were only good for the 27th. So, sorry Bchamp, but I'm just going to make it the 3rd then.

And a "warmup" war would basically be a smaller, more casual war generally attended by the more committed nerfers to test their blasters and work out the kinks for the better planned and attended war the next week. It seems to be a minnesota thing, and those guys are doing something right.

Ammo Update:
Posted Image

~1000 stock darts, mostly taggers
~500 Putty VANS
~1000 Rubber VANS
~200 Rubber Dome Darts
~50 Putty Wrap Darts
~An inestimable crapload of balls and arrows/rockets
~A more estimable but never estimated quantity of discs.

The rubber VANS are flakey in hoppers, so they will be marked to be distinguishable from the more reliable putty VANS or they won't be used.
edit: They have been marked with green sharpie and will be used at the war.

Snickers will be bringing between 600 and 1000 rubber dome darts, bringing that total between 800 and 1200.

We'll be making more putty VANS between now and the war, which are so far the best option for hoppered springers. Ryan wants 1000, which I think is overambitious, but it would be cool.

I spent the past week working on an experimental hopper mainly for use with rubber domes, but they also work with the putty BANS. It is made of a cut piece of sch.80 45 degree bend pipe and CPVC as a barrel material.

A war was had with with safer darts.

Pros:
+Putty vans worked just as well slugs if not better.
+Silicone domes shot for miles but needed cornstarch to work.
+Finally bought Ryan's plusbow.
+Got a free PAS
+Wendys with Ryan and Kane.
+Sold blasters

Cons:
-Vans failed hard in hoppers
-Cold

A war was had with with safer darts.

a lot of this for me, but as you all know that's my personal battle.

We did have putty-VANS that work great in hoppered springers, but since they were vastly outnumbered in supply by rubber-VANS, rubber domes, and taggers, hoppers weren't widely used. It was a lot like nerfing in early 2010 when only a few had wyes, which was good for variety, not-so-good for fairness. At least the teams seemed approximately even, and no one was completely left out of the competition.

Pros:
+I'm told the putty-VANS worked great in hoppers by a couple guys that bogarted the supply.
+- Some people were just using un-cornstarched domes in their hoppers with great success. I don't get it.
+ Lots of people not expected to come, came.
-Lots of people expected to come, did not come, or came very late (After Snickers left)
-I was poorly prepared to equip all the non-nerfers, and a lot of them ended up using rather poor armaments
+They rolled with it, and seemed to enjoy the unreliable old blasters as part of the game.
+Giant sword was actually an effective weapon.
+No wind to speak of
+Not nearly as cold as I thought it would be.
+Used a lot of old blasters and remembered how much fun they are, like Big Salvos.
