#288351 Modification and Paintjob Pictures

@Valor- why would you paint a creamsicle?
@Zack the Mack- Now I suddenly want a barrel break...
My new indoor primary:

BBB spring addition, brass stub in barrel, locks and other junk removed, krylon fusion PJ with rather sloppily applied detailing. Paired with an AT drum, prpbably the only reason to get an AT imo.

Gave my old and busted +Bow some love over Spring Break

That's 2"x1/8" aluminum strapping from Depot, cost me $8. And will never break.
Also, wood stock!

First post!

My adapted SNAP. Features 1.5" PVC plunger tube, new (To my knowledge) handle mount, and easy field stripping thanks to the way the stock is screwed onto the endcap. The gun field strips with 2 screws- there's only 4 total (not counting the stock).
Posted Image
The handle slots onto ridges cut into the PVC (This is one of the reasons it uses 1.5" PVC; 1.25" PVC is just too small. The slots are measured out to accept a LSFG handle, but mine broke (Damn you China!) and the PVC one serves me well.

Posted Image
8 round RSCB attachment with tacticool flashlight E-taped on. Stupid Windows photo gallery made the stock look crooked; it's not.
Ranges are ROUGHLY measured at 100'+

Made one of these things. I like Hippo's name of RingCatch Pump (RCP)
Posted Image
Uses [k26] over a nylon plunger rod, a skirt seal, Sch80 for the catch ring, and Ace#2 for the primary catch spring. It's held together with #6 wood screws, countersunk of course.
Posted Image
(Holes are drilled for a string stop; I have to get around to installing it)
I got my magic thinwall PVC at Do It Best- 10' for $4, you can order online and have it shipped to your local store free!

Little discovery- 45 degree PVC bell curves in the conduit section work great on choppers- it's made to funnel wires around a curve and works just as well with darts. I lopped about an inch off the male end (insert jokes here) of mine to keep a low profile, and used a little etape on clip and bell curve to keep everything snug.
Now, to an actual homemade- I got an ObsoleteBow awhile ago and have been making small adjustments to it.

Posted Image
The PVC foregrip is based around a 3/4"x1/2" PVC tee. Also, if you're building one of these (Why? There are RainBows now!), use 5/8" long screws on all nylon rod connections, and use lockwashers.

There's a new (to my knowledge) spring spacer- my long-winded description is on my flickr post. Spring now hits full compression, and the thing shoots hard.

#295035 Where To Buy Modding Materials

I got my thinwall from Do It Best. They ship it free to your local store and it's $4 for 10'!

#286182 Guide To Barrel Material

Posted by Y-Brik on 27 September 2010 - 10:59 PM in Modifications

Responding to question:
Home depot has CPVC. Ask someone or look harder. In my store it's stacked vertically next to the copper pipe. You need CPVC if you want to fire stefans; I don't think anyone has done a PVC singled LS. Oh, and judging by your post quality, the LS may not be the gun for you to mod. Have you even opened the thing? Is it your first mod? If the answers are what I think they are, forget it. Go get a 4B or a NF and learn before you try such a complex mod.

The clothespin is deceptive- a well made Snap will not misfire. As far as I can tell, both catches are as strong as they would need to be. So, no real difference.

#293132 Community Snap Thread

Posted by Y-Brik on 19 January 2011 - 10:06 PM in Homemades

Use a 1.25" endcap, lop off the connecting part (you only need the back), drill a hole in the middle to accommodate the plunger rod/endcap, and sand the hell out of it until you have a nice smooth catchface. It's a superlative with the durability of a preeminent. I feel like I said this before....

EDIT: I misspoke, I meant catchRAMP. My Snap uses a PVC catchramp attached to a metal washer for the catchface. Basically take the Superlative and replace epoxy putty with PVC.

My first snap relied on hotglue. That didnt even last a whole war. My next attempt involved zipties, which I recommended for strength, and later I swapped them out for a screw and washer to hold the bracket on with.

Just make sure you mount the bushing well- either with screws or PVC cement. That said, SNAPS are built like tanks and either way works (Mine is stopped by the rear- with a rubber washer between endcap and priming handle)

While padding the plunger head isn't a bad idea, the worst failures I have ever had with the 3 snaps I made are failures in bonds, not in the PVC material. Also, the coupler/bushing setup found on most snaps seems far more resilient than the single reducing fitting on your (very interesting) harpoon gun.

#288075 Community Snap Thread

Posted by Y-Brik on 07 November 2010 - 09:53 AM in Homemades

Here's the simplest definition I can think of:
A SNAP does not use a flat, vertical catch plate, but rather a pin contacting the plunger (rod or head), mounted on a clothespin trigger.
-The exclusion of a flat vertical cath plate rules out both Rainbow and Plusbow.
-The statement 'A pin contacting the plunger' is accurate with the CPT2 because, well, it does. It just adds a cradle to improve the catch surface area.

#339035 TR-27 GRYPHON - CR-18 Rapidstrike Mod

Posted by Y-Brik on 19 May 2014 - 11:37 AM in Modifications

This is fantastic, you're making my RS jealous for an upgrade!
A few observations/suggestions:
-Have you considered making the code interrupt-driven? It may be neater code, and save battery. Basically, instead of polling all the I/0 all the time, the arduino will "notice something has changed" and run the appropriate code.

-For user IO, I really like that OLED display, maybe integrated into the cheek rest if there isn't enough room where you have your ammo counter. I may be hitting the garage sale myself when the paycheck hits!

-If you go with the OLED display, consider a tactile 5-way switch for your input, accessible by the right index finger. Imagine tweaking firing control and other settings from there- and it's more discrete than the rocker switch. You may want to use your voltage divider trick there too, or give in and grab a shift register.

EDIT: More info on interrupts

I'd love to find a nice 3 position rotary switch what I could mount in such a way you can operate it with your right thumb, like the M16.

Like this one?
Or this one?

#286327 Snapbow Mk. V, Revised

Posted by Y-Brik on 01 October 2010 - 06:49 AM in Homemades

Great to see updated Snap writeups!
I have a 1.5" PVC Snap and have one notable updayte- Instead of potentially unreliable E-putty (Mine always crapped out on me), I took a 1.5" endcap and went t town on it with a dremel, creating a PVC catch ramp that fits right where an E-putty ramp would go. It's another option for builders, though a bit more labor intensive.

By "easily pass the 100' mark" do you mean like by ten feet or by like fifty feet?

Usually by 10; I don't think I've heard of a 150' SNAP yet

#291551 R Series Blasters - Overview!

Posted by Y-Brik on 26 December 2010 - 10:49 AM in Homemades

Yea. The guy had no idea what i was talking about. i had to explain what cpvc was and he still didnt know what i was talking about. Then i looked up and down the plumbing and electrical aisles and couldn't find it.

1. find smarter employee. Ask if there's a plumbing specialist in-store
2. CPVC is used mostly in potable (drinking) water as a substitute to copper tubing- as such it's near the copper tubing (In my experience anyway).

While Im here, what springs are you using? I'd recommend [k26] (Plusbow spring) which you can order off McMaster or buy from Split's sales thread.

I hate you for your beautifully-colored PVC.
Great design SG, I like how you've effectively removed the catch from the plunger tube. Now to figure out how to adapt this to American PVC specs...

#290739 R Series Blasters - Overview!

A k45 theoretically doesn't even fit over 1/2 cpvc let alone pvc.

It fits very loosely over CPVC. I don't care about theories, I own it, and it works great on 1/2 cpvc. It's OD is 1" with .092" wire diameter.

Isn't your plunger rod 1/2 PVC and not 1/2 CPVC

It is, that's why he still needs a spring. Think people, think!

I have heard that some people use cut down [k26] springs in their raiders. Since the alpha trooper is just a reshelled raider that would probly work.

No. [k26] doesn't fit in any of the Recons (Such a shame...). RFSG springs, however, do.

I just noticed the Rev falls on the first day of Spring Break, so there's an iota of hope I can go to this thing, assuming I have a place to crash 'over there', possibly with a handful more of the Chicago crew.
Again, this is a possibility, not a guarantee.

I know my local Hobby Lobby sells craft foam in 2mm (standard) and 3mm(THICK) varieties (It's like a 12/18 sheet for $1) if you want more padding, though I feel the 2mm should suffice.
I love this idea, methinks we have a true evolution of the Slug (and homemade dart in general) here.

#300756 New Nerf Guns

Posted by Y-Brik on 29 June 2011 - 03:03 PM in News

Why does everyone think that these guns are going to use a familiar plunger or reverse plunger setup? How, exactly, would you propel AND put sufficient spin on a disc by blowing a bunch of compressed air at it from behind? I would be very surprised to see plungers in these blasters, and find it far more likely that it's a new propulsion system.

I'm a little bit bummed that we aren't going to see any new N-Strike guns this year, and that the stupid orange re-releases are of a bunch of blasters that nobody cares about. How many versions of the crappiest Nerf gun (Maverick) do we really need? Is that blaster really that popular, especially after the Spectre came out? Of all three retailer exclusive guns, the one that got a nod from Nerf is the battery-powered Barricade? And the Raider, really? Not the Long Strike?

I'm just hoping this isn't going to make the actually good blasters hard to find.

Agreed with your thoughts on propulsion, though Nerf has been known to, well, nerf their own designs ever since they came across their lovechild Recon design. I take issue with your view of the Nstrike lineup. The Maverick is consistently Nerf's best selling blaster, at a reasonable price point, cool functionality, and general reliability among stock blasters (It IS a piece of shit from a modders' perspective)- it's earned its 2 repaints a year. The spectre is an overengineered Mav- the less ammo capacity and increased price make it a far cry from the Mav's replacement. As for the LSk, if you really want one, there's one in the works for this year (I won't say too mich for fear of ruining the 'suprise'). And Raiders are one of my favorite ReClones, that and the Recon itself.
/end pointless rant about child's toys.
/begin more relevant rant about companies' promises to this community.
@Hasbro- you released this info on the Facebook page ages ago! Why just now let us know? If Hasbro can't keep up its send of supplying new information to the community, I fail to see why we're holding back from speculation threads (such fun little shitstorms those) and reporting the news when it crops up on the net instead of waiting an extra 2 months for a piss-poor release given secondhand!
Well, that's enough ranting. The disc-shooters look cool after all....

If you have a spare Recon shell (and who doesn't with the PTs breaking all the time), this method works out well. Use coathanger wire to link the slides, and a tac rail bracket to affix the pump to the barrel

#319067 Retaliator/Recon Pump Grip (write up included)

Posted by Y-Brik on 23 July 2012 - 11:44 PM in Modifications

That is awesome. I like how compact it still is, and how it has the light and red dot. It makes the alpha troop look kind of useless at that point.

Close, but there's also something to be said for original design. Jams did occur, I ended up selling this and getting a Raider when I realized that's what I was basically building (The AT wasn't out yet, and quite frankly I hate the ergonomics of it)

Perfect? No. Useful and fun? Definitely.

#299801 PumpSnap writeup.

Posted by Y-Brik on 13 June 2011 - 04:13 PM in Homemades

You never showed what your plunger rod ended up looking like, is it just a piece of CPVC with a huge slot in it for the priming bar? Wouldn't Nylon rob but much more sturdy?

I don't know about Rob, but nylon rod would definitely be sturdier--have fun carving a slot through it though. Also, since (common) nylon rod has a 1/8" smaller OD than CPVC, there's very little room for error. CPVC has been used in the past and I haven't heard of it failing on anybody, and it's much easier to make

tl;dr- nylon is stronger but it's not worth it. He likely used CPVC.

#286171 Nerf Modification Spring Sizes

I'm 90% sure McMaster ships worldwide, so there's your primary source. I got mine at Do It Best; they have online ordering with free shipping to your nearest store- go here. It's $4-ish for 10' with no shipping hassles or driving to numerous Ace's to search for the stuff.

Thanks alot and your awesome!

!.,..'
I caught most of your punctuation; it seems to have escaped your post. As with any SNAP the plunger tube is 1.25" PVC. I would suggest you build a basic SNAP before taking this one on.
