#103236 Rifled Barrels

Posted by CD-R on 30 April 2007 - 07:12 PM in Homemades

I have gotten some succes with a crude method of my own design:
Basically, you get a piece of brass that fits in side your barrel ( I use CPVC) and put aslice in the end of it about 1/4 of an inch long. After that, you fold out the area near the slice just a few degrees to make a sharp corner. You will have to do some experimenting to find out how much you bend out the brass, as it depends on barrel type. Next is the tricky bit, take the brass, and heat it up on a gas stove until your flame starts to turn green. (This part is dangerous, make sure you wear heat proof gloves when holding the barrel and the brass that you can get off if the heat starts to get through. Also, like I need to tell you guys this, but try not to burn your house down, and immediately after using the heated metal, dunk it in a bucket of water to cool it down). After the metal is heated, jam it down the barrel while twisting it at a constant rate. Then pull it out while making sure that the threads go the same way. Repeat this afew times to get the barrel sufficiently rifled.
The method is crude, yet efffective. I don't know if it's just me, but I feel that my shots go straighter with barrels treated this way; however, I don't have any data to back this up.

I agree with thescheif. I have an AT3K with an extended air tank that is wickedly powerful; it can dent the lid of a paint can at point blank, and shoot through both sides of a pizza box. By dent a paint can, I mean a slight distortion visible by holding it up to a light and watching for a different type of reflection. I have two questions: Are you sure that it was steel, and are you sure that it was 3/16 of an inch thick? But, if you are getting the ranges you're talking about, then good job. You should definitely put up some pictures, or a more detailed description of your design. It sounds similar to something I built a while back: a bike pump, a 2 by six inch pvc air tank, a ball valve, and a barrel about three feet long (I don't think further explanation is necessary). If I remember correctly, mine got similar ranges.
I am not trying to criticize you, or doubt your design. I would just like to know how you made something that powerful.

I plan to use a mix of micros and megas, but mainly micros. Last time, (at ECNO) I couldn't use my garbage gun (its name is derived form the fact that I made it from random junk in my basement) due to lack of megas, and my 3k broke in the first ten minutes. both problems are now solved. I will be getting a ride with z80, as I am a member of z80's "crew", or as darkshrimp so eloquently put it, an oodle nerfer.

#104307 Smoke Bombs

Posted by CD-R on 06 May 2007 - 09:13 PM in Off Topic

What badger said makes sense. Smoke bombs, or any similar pyrotechnic devices are serious fire hazards. Also, they are dangerous to any one not used to handling them. Furthermore, as with any home made device, they are unreliable; this means that they could, one:not work, or two: make a rather large explosion. I'm sure that most people could make smoke bombs safely, but if one person mixes the wrong chemicals, or anything else, someone is going to get hurt. I think that the main problem is the "what are you crazy kids doing?" factor. As Captain Slug said, I do not think that people (especially the police or fire department) would approve of us setting off smoke bombs.
And as for shooting them out of a gun? Well sure, let's shoot burning chunks of chemicals at each other. I think it would be cool to do, but unfortunately, it's just too dangerous.

Nefsharpie6, I'm sorry if I came across as harsh. I was having a bad day, so I may have vented a some of my frustration. In the past, I thought about the use of smoke bombs. Once my clan actually tried using them in a war, but as above stated, we found them too dangerous.

#104439 Bulk Ordering Foam

Posted by CD-R on 07 May 2007 - 07:05 PM in Off Topic

Basically, I'm thinking of bulk ordering FBR, but I don't know where to buy it, or how they ship it. I found some websites, but I would like to hear what you all have to say. One thing that I'm worried about is how my parents will react if a truck load of foam shows up at my front door, so information on how it is shipped would be appreciated.

Does anyone know where FA24 ordered his foam?

#104493 Bulk Ordering Foam

That sounds good. I'll bring the money to LCM. I think that I may have found the same site you ordered from, and their price was exactly the same,+shipping. Before I buy it, I would like to check out how it fits in my barrels, so I will have to make the final decision regarding the purchase at LCM.

Some things have come up, so I may have to leave early, or not come at all. I will edit this post when I have more information. Sorry OMC, that means I may not be able to buy that foam from you.

#104587 Epoxy

Posted by CD-R on 08 May 2007 - 08:24 PM in Off Topic

Yeah, MEK is nasty stuff. I asked my dad (he used to do neurological research) about it, and he said that the fumes were very toxic. Once I had PVC cement spill in my basement. After cleaning it up, I basically had to sit outside for a few hours to let the fumes dissipate. At least it was nice out, and my dad and I managed to contain the spill fast enough to keep fumes from being a serious problem. But still, watch what you're doing, and don't spill PVC cement!

I think that Skitzo's advice is a good path to follow. Unless you ,or your relatives are in the direct path of serious physical harm, that you did not initiate, DO NOT HIT THEM. I have a red belt in Tae kwon do, but have never had to hit some one hard while in school(even though the occasional warning shot is necessary). Almost all problems have non-violent solutions. Just use your best judgment, and think about it before you do anything.

#105175 Measuring Ranges

Posted by CD-R on 12 May 2007 - 10:04 PM in General Nerf

I'm tired of seeing so many arguments about ranges seeming strange, and so much differentiation in how people are measuring them. Today, my friends and I were curious about what ranges our guns could achieve, so we used the following method:
We used a tape measure and chalk to mark out ten foot increments on a straight, flat section of my street. We then wrote the accompanying numbers next to the marks.
This took us only about two to three minutes to do. This method was very simple, and gave us very accurate measurements. It's really basic, but I figured I'd post about it in an attempt to help reduce the amount of inaccuracy pertaining to gun ranges.

I cannot come. There is just no way that I can make it work.
OMC I'll just send the money for the foam with some one else, probably a kid named max. Do you have a scale that you can weigh it on? This way I can compare the two weights to check whether some idiiot stole any of it on the car ride back.

#105314 Splitfire Leak Problem.

Posted by CD-R on 13 May 2007 - 08:12 PM in Modifications

The same thing happened to me. It was a slippery slope to a dead splitfire. Make sure that the rubber seal in the back of the valve is sealing with the back of the air chamber. Try pushing the black rubber seal back with a thin dowel, to get it back into position. If that does not work, the you can try lubricating the seal. In my case, these worked temporarily; so, unfortunately, my splitfire died. However, I managed to splice in two AT2K air tanks, and revive it as the splitech 2000; but, that just sprung a leak as well.

#105333 Splitfire Leak Problem.

Posted by CD-R on 13 May 2007 - 09:18 PM in Modifications

No, try looking up how splifire valves work, then it should make sense. I can't explain it right now because I need to keep working on my English paper. If you can't find it, I'll explain it tommorrow afternoon.
Now I have some time. Ok, so here is a link to where the splitfire's valves are explained:
scroll about 2/3 the way down the page, the post is by falcon.
What I am saying, is you need to find a way to either push the little black rubber seals back into position, or to lubricate them with something to make them seal better. I'm afraid that to do this, you're on your own, as I was not able to fix mine despite numerous attempts.

PS, as z80 posted, the thirtieth is best for us.

I'm sure you could also trigger it with a trip wire (of course one that will break, not knock people over).
PS watch where you place any mines, so that only player set them off.

#106849 Your Greatest Moment

Posted by CD-R on 20 May 2007 - 10:27 PM in General Nerf

A few months ago I took on four people a once, and won. As I was grabbing the flag, the fifth guy snuck up behind me, and shot me in the back. However, about an hour after wards, I pulled something similar and sprinted a few hundred feet back to base, before I stumbled upon an enemy ambush. Needless to say, I was about thirty feet from getting back to base with the flag before I got shot about five times simultaneously.

#106911 Ls Clip Mod For Faster Reloading

I forgot if he needed spacers or not, but one of my friends did this by just gluing three magazines together. He had two facing up, and one facing down. So basically, instead of using PVC as a spacer, he used a third magazine facing downwards.

If you want an amazingly powerful plunger mechanism, then just rip the one way valve off the front of a basketball pump. After that, then take off the back of it, and place a spring on the inside. Next, put the back part on again and use it for whatever you can think of. The one that I experimented with had such a good seal, that you could block the air from coming out, and the handle would not move at all, even though there was a stock expand a blast spring trying to push it forwards.
If this post makes no sense due to a lack of pictures, or horrible use of commas, just tell me.

#107142 Night Battle

Posted by CD-R on 22 May 2007 - 08:15 PM in Nerf Wars

If you bring your own wepons dont bring stephons.

If we bring our own weapons? every body is going to bring their own weapons. Also, the vast majority of people use home made darts. Are you absolutely sure that home made darts not allowed?
With that said, using a paintball park sounds pretty cool. I will talk to the other members of our clan, but it sounds a little far away for us.

#107151 How Did You Start?

Peer pressure. Hey man, everyone's doing it.
No seriously, Z80 and I got into Nerf the same way. I was at our clan's first game about a year and a half ago.

Wasn't sure if this merits its own topic, but OK. (If so, one of the admins can just move it. Or you can just tell me, and I'll move it myself)
Here is the plunger design I was trying to describe two days ago:
Get a small crappy little pump like this:
Posted Image
Rip the check valve off of the front of it, and put a spring on the inside after taking the back part off.
Posted Image
After that, put it back together and use it for whatever you want. The seal between the punger and the tube is really good. I don't know what to do with mine, but I'm sure you people could come up with something.

#107351 Best Possible Mods?

Posted by CD-R on 23 May 2007 - 08:33 PM in Modifications

Definitely, Maxshots are really good. I just modded mine yesterday.
For range however, I think that the national geographic thing is the best. Then again, with air tank expansions, anything is possible.

#107659 Water Gun Too Nerf Gun

Posted by CD-R on 26 May 2007 - 12:09 PM in Modifications

I made a sucessful conversion using an XP310, and yes, with most super soakers, a longer barrel is much better. If you're getting 65 feet with a Nightfinder barrel, than you should be able to get awesome ranges with a better material.

#107718 Kickback

Posted by CD-R on 26 May 2007 - 10:15 PM in Homemades

Standard double A batteries do not use acid. Only car batteries and some other large high powered batteries use a lead acid configuration. It is common misconception, but anyway, even though shooting "unusual" projectiles is fun, the chemicals inside batteries are toxic.
Back on topic, I do not think that it is practically possible to make a nerf gun with real kick back. The only toy gun that I have seen with considerate push back, is a CPS 3200 supersoaker. That thing was so powerful that on its highest setting, it could push against you with considerable force (back when I was in sixth grade, that is).

so, as a follow up question, would it be possible/feasable to rifle a barrel? That would give a lot more accuracy than a less snug barrel that the dart smacks around on would.

That has been extensively discussed (maybe too extensively). The general consensus was that it was not possible. You can use the search function to find the thread.

#108081 Nesting

Posted by CD-R on 28 May 2007 - 11:08 PM in Modifications

I was to lazy to make a write up on my "rifling method", but it did get the darts spinning due to spiraling grooves on the inside of the barrel. Unfortunately, there is no advantage to this, as it purely served to make my darts curve off in all strange directions. Basically, don't waste your time with it. There are many things you can work on that will improve your guns much more, and with much less work involved.

#108636 Replacement Springs

Posted by CD-R on 31 May 2007 - 08:34 PM in Modifications

I thought about the magnet thing when I was a newbie lurking on the forums. I think that it should work; however, In my experiences with high energy electronics and magnetics I have found that often the magnet will not move straight, but rather try to rotate and stick to the other magnet. So basically, when you release the plunger, instead of going straight down the tube due to repulsive forces, it could break the plunger shaft in half, spin around, and slam into the other magnet breaking both in half. Maybe you could play around with the polarization of the magnets to overcome this. For now, just give it a try. I think that it might work.
