#332360 You say Panther?

Posted by Ambience 327 on 26 July 2013 - 06:25 PM in General Nerf

Same problem bro. You can tell its bullshit if the inside of the barrel is black. If the inside is white, it's unchanged. Hmm... Wonder how they came up with that? *fake coughs* (racist)

Thanks! I wasn't sure if there would even be a way to ID these before getting them home. Now, if I decide I want some of these smaller-tanked versions, I know what to look for.

Any chance you could get some exact measurements of a minimized tank (i.e. all unnecessary stuff removed)?

If these are small enough, they might be just what I need to finally realize my dream of an old double-shot with airgun tanks replacing the plunger assembly.

#265991 You May Not Want To Re-barrell Your 4b Just Yet...

Posted by Ambience 327 on 19 February 2010 - 12:25 PM in Modifications

Guys, you don't need a tape measure or fancy trigonometry to figure out the distance here - simply basic geometry and the application of the Pythagorean Theorum. (A^2 + B^2 = C^2)

If we assume that the laser range finder was held at 5' above the ground (a foot or so either way makes little difference), we can see that:

A2 + B2 = C2

A^2 + 5^2 = 94.5^2

A^2 + 25 = 8930.25

A^2 = 8905.25

A = 94.367632162

That tells us that the linear distance the dart travelled (what you would be measuring with a tape measure) is roughly 94.36 feet. See how close that 94.5 foot "estimate" with the range finder was? This still tells us that the thing went 90+ feet.

I didn't doubt the claim for a second, mainly due to the fact that Kabigon actually measured to the point where he saw the dart hit, not where it finally stopped. That told me enough about his methods to know that he was being as precise as possible. My guess is, as Mindwarrior pointed out, the fins on these "rockets" helped stabilise the flight and allowed these darts to achieve such a nice distance. My guess is, however, that their velocity is probably not as high as a stefan that goes the same distance, as the fins probably keep this dart up longer at lower speeds. Hence, they are probably easier to dodge (and certainly easier to see).

#233944 Wtf Is This?

Posted by Ambience 327 on 02 June 2009 - 02:41 PM in General Nerf

It looks like the bastard child of a Big Blast and a Speedloader, but I've never seen it (or anything quite like it) before.

I'm rather curious about this thing. Have you opened the box yet? I don't see a trigger anywhere... Is it a push-pull? Is it a pull and release? Or is there a trigger I'm just not seeing? Does the turret auto-rotate, or is it manual?

And of course, what was the price?

(For the smart-alecks: Yes, I can see that it says "air pump powered" on the box. The AT2K also says "auto advancing barrel" on the box - so I don't put a whole lot of faith in the marketing used on boxes.)

Most of the links on the front page sidebar (gallery, modifications, homemades, etc) are old and unused these days anyway. I don't think there were many (any?) useful pics in the gallery. You'll find the best source of modded-blaster pics in the Modification/paintjob Pictures thread.

#310215 Wrist Mounted Flywheel Gauntlet Blaster

Posted by Ambience 327 on 27 January 2012 - 01:32 PM in Homemades

I like the design you have going for your "round the arm" drum-feed, but I have a question. The way I understand it, the reason Streamline darts were invented is because the standard Nerf darts (i.e. a head with a larger diameter than the foam behind it) wouldn't feed properly in a magazine due to the odd shape. How do you propose to solve this problem since you are planning to use sonics/taggers?

#310418 Wrist Mounted Flywheel Gauntlet Blaster

Posted by Ambience 327 on 31 January 2012 - 11:37 AM in Homemades

I had a thought as to a solution to the problem I mentioned. What if you made a thin, cog-like piece that would go in the rear of the drum, to hold the tails of the darts separated. (think of a thin-sliced cross section of the feeder mechanism in a Raider drum). Your spring would have to be strong enough to both move the drum's dart pusher and the darts AND turn the cog, but it might solve the issue. (The pusher for the flywheels would have to be small enough to push the dart without bumping into the cog, and the next dart would advance once the flywheel pusher slides back out of the way.)

I think you can probably figure out what I mean, but if you need me to sketch up a crude diagram, I can do so.

#262356 Would This Modification Do Anything?

Posted by Ambience 327 on 19 January 2010 - 10:36 AM in Modifications

It might help a little, but then you'd be getting rid of the one feature of this blaster that makes it stand out from the crowd - the break-action breech. The Doubleshot isn't the greatest blaster - it is easily outranged by smaller one like the Nitefinder, while things like the Maverick hold more shots. The break-action breech, which makes it rear loading, is the one unique feature of the Doubleshot - lose that and you've just got another less-than-stellar-ranged blaster capable of firing off two shots before reloading/repriming.

Name: Daltarian
Realm: Arathor
Level: 50
Race: Human
Class: Rogue

Armory Link

I've been playing casually for about two months now. I find it quite fun, and very relaxing after a stressful day at work. I don't have the time nor the inclination to power-level, so I just do whatever I find fun or intriguing at the time. (I spent 10+ hours bashing on Dreaming Whelps in the Swamp of Sorrows just to get my favorite vanity pet in the game - the Tiny Emerald Whelpling.)

My wife also plays, but she's a bit of an Altoholic - having 5 toons currently with the highest being a Level 32 Human Prestess and the lowest being a Level 10 Rogue who is basically her "Bank Alt" but whom she cannot resist playing occasionally. We'll have a 2nd PC and a 2nd account fairly soon (the PC is coming free from a friend, and the account is the only thing I'm allowed to spend money on right now) so that we can play together when the baby is sleeping, rather than just taking turns watching the other play. It can be a really social game if you get in with a good guild and/or have/make some good friends in the game. Not quite a replacement for real social interaction, but it is definately a good way to spend your free time if you're into it.

#198302 World Of Warcraft

Posted by Ambience 327 on 23 December 2008 - 01:40 PM in Off Topic

Like most forms of entertainment (movies, books, board games, D&D, nerf, etc), WoW can be a very fun way to pass some time, blow off some steam, unwind, relieve stress, etc. It can, as others have mentioned, be a social experience, especially if you have RL friends/relatives/spouse who play and get on a Ventrillo/Teamspeak server while you play together.

Like most forms of entertainment, WoW can also be taken way too seriously, can be played obsessively, and can change your life in detrimental ways (socially, health-wise, etc).

It is all about the attitude you take towards it, and understanding that most things are okay if you deal with them in moderation. (Some things, like many illegal drugs, are so damaging even in "moderation" that they should be avoided no matter what, but I digress.)

To illustrate, consider alchohol. It is easy to bring up a lot of stories about how it destroys lives, how it consumes people, how it is very harmful. It is also easy to find doctors who recommend a glass of wine a day to help with stress, and to take advantage of the antioxidents and other beneficial attributes of wine. Heck, the US Government even outlawed alchoholic beverages for a while in the early part of the twentieth century, because it was "bad for you". However, thousands (if not millions) of people enjoy alcoholic beverages on a daily basis without ruining their lives, alienating their friends and families, or causing extreme, lasting harm to themselves.

It's really more about the person than the specific problem. If it wasn't WoW, the people who have "disappeared into Azeroth" would probably have found another way to fill that "void" that was discussed above. (Be it alchohol, food, drugs, promiscuity, etc)

I guess my main point is, don't play WoW while pregnant. Since alchohol can cause birth defects, exposure to Orcs, Trolls and Ogres probably isn't good for your baby either.

#211399 Working Shotgun

Posted by Ambience 327 on 11 February 2009 - 11:26 AM in Homemades

I sure hope you're using a washer with a smaller diameter than the 1/2" FBR you're using, otherwise these things have the potential to cause an inordinate amount of pain and possible injury. Since your weight is right in the middle of something that is basically a 1/2" long x 1/2" diameter cylinder of foam, it isn't going to always fly "head forward" like a front-weighted nerf dart or stefan. These will have a tendancy to spin in midair, end-over-end, which means you might be hitting bare skin with metal if your washer is flush with the foam (or even slightly smaller).

I think a better idea would be to use standard bb weights in these, as they would be less likely to stick out of the foam.

That said, your 2 x 1/4" FBR shotgun ammo has given me food for thought. The fact that these will likely spin like that would most likely reduce their range (I'm not going to give a science lesson here, but the drag would be increased, slowing the dart down sooner rather than later). However, it would also lead to them being more likely to spread out in a true "buckshot" style, especially if you weighted each mini-dart slightly off-center of the cylinder's center line. Since I play indoors, range isn't much of a factor, and I've been trying to come up with a decent scatter blast for clearing narrow hallways, which this might just help with.

#321838 WoodHeight War

Posted by Ambience 327 on 21 September 2012 - 08:23 AM in Nerf Wars

From what I can read, what you are planning is quite a bit different than anything the folks that frequent this site are familiar with. Thus, you should probably go into quite a bit more detail as to how exactly your war will work.

It seems to me you are trying to set up some kind of single-elimination Nerf tournament over the course of a weekend or something, where people try to take each other out Hunger-Games style. That may be fun in its own right, but I doubt many of us here would be willing to travel very far to play in a game where we may get eliminated in a matter of minutes/hours and unable to play the rest of the time.

#151273 What's Your Fav Stock Dart

Posted by Ambience 327 on 15 April 2008 - 10:36 AM in General Nerf

Since we play indoor, mostly stock, and with a lot of old SM250's that can't fire the taggers - my group has had the best results with the Sonic Micros. They tend to go 5-10 feet farther than standard suction-cup micros, and they don't get jammed on to the firing posts of our older guns (like taggers do *). They also fit & work well in most of the newer guns that we're starting to employ (i.e. Mav's, NF's, FF's).

* SuperMaxx 250's, the old guns we use, have firing posts rather than barrels, and the taggers get stuck on them to the point that their heads get blown off rather than the dart firing correctly!

#145809 What Nerf Guns Could Be The Crossbows Of The Future?

Posted by Ambience 327 on 19 March 2008 - 02:15 PM in General Nerf

I figure that at some point, we'll get a great mod for the Disk Shot Disk Launcher and that will become the most powerful weapon of all - and will be highly sought after because they don't sell as well as the LS's et all.

;)

Just kidding!!!

I could see the LS & Recon being fairly popular long after their production ceases- simply because the clip system is so useful and they guns are very nice looking and comfortable.

If the Maverick was a better gun, it might fit the bill.

But I think the king of all will be the Nightfinder - simply because they are so popular now, and it is due to the ease & effectiveness of modding them. So people will still want them in the years to come, because they are great.

#206528 What Guns Do You Use?

Posted by Ambience 327 on 26 January 2009 - 10:42 AM in General Nerf

Why the hell do you play in the dark?

Probably the same reason I do: It's more fun to shoot at a target you can barely see, because it's more challenging. Also, it gives you concealment and that adrenaline rush that there could be someone stalking you... Playing in the dark owns playing in the light.

Precisely. When you're indoors, and most of the lights are out, it opens up opportunities for different playstyles and tactics. Stealth can actually be employed, but only if you know how to move quietly. You also have to check your targets (if you play that friendly fire counts), and it takes more time to clear a room - you have to check all the shadows, nooks and crannies to make sure one of the smaller players isn't hiding there, waiting to pelt you with foam the moment you turn your back.

Playing in lighted conditions, either indoors or out, is fun - but to me there is something missing. Playing in the dark, you get that paranoia factor going, which gets your heart racing - which is what the adrenaline junkies yearn for. :D Nothing is quite the same as silently walking down a hall, checking every doorway along the way, only to hear the sudden burst of a Magstrike opening up on you from the corner you thought was empty... :o

Have you guys ever played in smoke?
My dad plays Vietnamese songs and he has this smoke machine thing.
I used it and IT WAS AWESOME .
We did it with light , but still .
Were going to try with my basement completely dark.

We used a fog machine once. It made for an interesting atmosphere. We set it at the top of a flight of stairs, and let it run down a hallway and into the nearby rooms. It faded fairly quickly toward the far end of the hall, but at the near end, it was thick enough to look cool. As a bonus, that end of the hall had an illuminated green EXIT sign, which gave the smoke an eerie green glow in the darkness.

That reminds me of another benefit of playing in the dark - you can use glowsticks as objective markers. We've used them as flags, and to denote territories.

(Inspired by Halo/Battlefront - set up an odd number of "territories" - where each is denoted by two differently colored glow sticks. When one team arrives at the territoriy, they convert it to their side by hiding the enemy's color under a piece of dark cloth, leaving the territory their color. If the other team wants to take it over, they have to remove the enemy color and replace it with their own. To make it more dangerous to convert a territory, the player doing the conversion has to set all of their blasters on the ground before making the conversion - leaving them vulnerable during the conversion process - that way you can't just rush in and switch it - you've got to fight off the enemy team before making the switch.)

#205667 What Guns Do You Use?

Posted by Ambience 327 on 23 January 2009 - 03:51 PM in General Nerf

My Setup:

2 DTB's from the original setup (the red and blues)
Modded NF
My Maverick (i named it Ashley.)
and if i'm hiding in a tree, my LS or Recon

BTW this is my first post :D

That's a lot of guns to be packing around. Do you carry them all at once, or is that your entire arsenal?

As I generally play indoors, I like to go with my AT2K (AR's removed) as my Primary.
For a Secondary/Sidearm, I typically go with my Maverick (AR's removed, penny mod), though I sometimes go with a NF or Disc Shot instead.

Recently I tried replacing the Mav with a Mech Tommy 20, and was surprised with the results. The combination of the great range from the AT2K, plus the high ROF from the MT20, was quite devastating to the opposition.

In a VIP Escort game, I managed to take down four opponents, including the target VIP, in a single rush. The sudden shock of the MT20 powering up, the whoosh of air from my AT2K, and the barrage of MT20 fire was enough to completely disorient the enemy [we play in the dark], so I was able to quickly eliminate several decent players, and win the game for my team. I got nailed right after taking down the VIP, but a 4/1 Kill/Death ratio isn't bad, especially considering it was a suicide rush around a blind corner.

#314917 VANS Are Not Slugs

Posted by Ambience 327 on 28 April 2012 - 04:59 PM in Darts and Barrels

Perhaps we could put an air soft bb in, which would increase ranges and accuracy, and still keep VANS metal free.

That would only help if the airsoft BB was more dense (i.e. heavier) than the silicone/goo, otherwise, just like with hot glue, you aren't really going to see any benefit.

#156612 Use Of Stock Guns

Posted by Ambience 327 on 22 May 2008 - 08:05 AM in General Nerf

We play at a church, with my wife & I helping as sponsors for the Youth Group. As such, most of the guns we use are stock, with lightly modded Mav's, NF's and AT2K's (AR's & posts removed on all, penny mods on some Mav's) as the only modded guns. Even with that, the 2K's are only allowed to be 2-pumped unless you are taking a long-ranged shot. So any further mods would be pointless, the guns wouldn't be allowed!

However, If I ever manage to get to one of the bigger wars, I'll probably add a few mods to one of my AT2K's to stay competetive.

#175114 Urukai Bow, By Splitlip

Posted by Ambience 327 on 05 September 2008 - 09:48 AM in Modifications

I can't see why reloading would be too terribly slow - the bloody thing sucks the dart all the way down the barrel when you pull back on the plunger. Just slip a dart into the tube, and you're ready to go. Not much slower than loading a stock NF or DS. (Only slower then because of the size of the gun...er bow.)

Splitlip - this is made of pure awesomeness. The beastly looks of that thing just add to the intimidation factor of the 100'+ range, and just imagine the barrel-tap possibilities. I know I'd consider myself out if you tapped me with one of those "axes". :D

If I were you (and I'm not, because you are well beyond me in modding skills thus far), I'd add some ammo holders along the bow arms - like you see on modern compound bows. That could speed the reload times a bit, though I'm certain they aren't as bad as hereticorp seems to think.

And FYI Icespartan, the word is habit. One B.

Maybe he got it confused with Hobbit - LOTR connection in the thread and all...

#175120 Urukai Bow, By Splitlip

Posted by Ambience 327 on 05 September 2008 - 10:26 AM in Modifications

Maybe I read you wrong. I guess my thinking was - compare it to anything else that hits those ranges, and how many of them would be faster to reload than this? Most that I can think of require one of the following:

- open a breech, load, close the breech, cock/pump, aim & fire
- pull barrel out of coupler, load, replace barrel, cock/pump, aim & fire
- put dart in barrel, ramrod or blow to bottom, cock/pump, aim & fire

There may be a few out there that are faster - probably something turreted or speed-loader equipped. But I think that this gun stacks up pretty well with:

- put dart in barrel, pull back handle, aim & release

Plus, it gets bonus points for the fact that it took a weapon like this to take down the killing machine that was Boromir. :D

Many of us use ball-valves or dart doors on top of our hoppers. These allow you to quickly load those, but retain the ease of loading darts by hand with little fuss. (i.e. once your speed-loaders are out, or if you only need 1 or 2 darts to top off)

#179727 Tommy 12

Posted by Ambience 327 on 26 September 2008 - 02:19 PM in Modifications

How comfortable is it? (And how big are your hands?)

I have fairly small, stubby hands for a 30-year-old guy, but if these things are comfortable enough, I would love to get my hands on a pair, supe-up the motors a bit and dual-wield them. They would make highly effective rushing weapons if used in that manner. (Not to mention that the motor noise would be a non-issue if you hurl yourself at your enemies screaming a battle-cry.)

Being semi-auto as they are, and with a decently small size, I could see these being used John-Woo style to great effect - each hand aiming at a different target. It would take a lot of practive to expect very many hits that way, but the sheer awesomeness of the prospect would be enough motivation to get me to spend some time working on my aim.

#242069 Tiny Dart

Posted by Ambience 327 on 15 July 2009 - 02:29 PM in Modifications

Images fixed for you - you had double tags. You only need one.

I was bored and had a few dead stock darts. The tips were all gone. So I made these:

[img]http://i708.photobucket.com/albums/ww90/popup123/DSC00227.jpg

What you need is:

-A stock dart that has been cut in half
-A plastic bead

All you have to do is put the bead through the opening of the stock dart like this.

You will need to dome the dart with hot glue or it won't work so well. It follows the same procedure to making a stepan but the hole is already there. These darts go farther compared to Tagger darts. This is an easy way of getting rid of your crappy stock darts!

Comments or flames?

#242082 Tiny Dart

Not to mention, if you buy your Nerf blasters new, they come with darts - so you already have some to work with.

Also, if - like me - you play indoor wars with stock darts in the dark, you have a lot of darts get their heads ripped off due to being stepped on. This is a great way to recycle otherwise garbage darts. Of course, they can't be used in said stock-dart-only wars, but if you do both, you're golden.

Please take better pics they are really blurry. Thanks.

Dont have a better camera.

Most likely, all you need to do to avoid blurry pics is use a tripod - or failing that place your camera on a desk or other sturdy surface. You are probably getting blur from the motion of the camera while the picture is being taken. Stabilise it and you will get much clearer pics.

If that isn't the problem, then you need to either focus the camera, or allow time for the auto-focus to work.

#164390 The Vulcan: Internals And Mods! New Mods Pg.9!

Here's my question - what happens, both stock and modified - when the belt advances to one of the endcaps? Does the thing dry-fire, or is there something to prevent that?

Does it not fire when it hits the end of the chain when stock?

Does it skip firing when it hits the middle "end cap" in the chain when you use it with the modified chain?

Details, man. We need more details! It will never be enough!!! :D

Seriously, I already addressed this. It works just fine. It lines it up, shoots air into it, and moves on. It treats it the same as every other shell.

Well, you had addressed it by saying it worked fine. I wanted particulars as to what it actually did. This information you have now provided. Thanks. :D

(It matters to me as it might make a difference in what kind pf chain-joining mods are preferred. Yours is quick and easy, but it puts a blank shot after every 25 links - that would be like leaving one slot in your RF20 or Magstrike unloaded - i.e. that shot wouldn't do anything, but it would still be part of the firing process, slowing overall ROF - not much, but still.)

4. To contradict my previous statement, the kid on the extra ammo pack has the chains connected over his shoulder. HOWEVER there is a little dead space between the two chains, leading me to believe that the chains are not directly connected.

Actually, if you look closer it appears that the "dead space" you mention is actually the sling from the gun passing over the chain. However, I count less than 25 shells in the area of the chain shown on him, so it is possibel that it is only a single chain, with very little hanging over his back, just for show on the pic.

It would definately be nice if the chains would connect without needing to mod them, but we'll just have to wait and see.

That "white dart with black tip" could just be a normal orange dart with a blue tip - under very bright lights/flash. Dart foam is rather shiny, and could easily reflect more light that the plastic - enough to wash out the orange color we would easily recognize, and provide a stark contrast that would make the blue tip look black. (Look how the Sonics look - almost a light grey.) There does seem to be quite a lot of light bouncing off that sign in the background, so this could conceivably be just an orange dart.

Also, they look a lot more orange than white on the packaging in the image.

(I'm a bit of an amateur videographer, my wife would say more of a video-nut, so lighting issues like this appears to be just pop out at me sometimes.)
