#128195 Homemades Picture Thread

Posted by Carbon on 31 October 2007 - 11:38 PM in Homemades

I'm not sure about funny, but it is nice! Is that the inline clip on the front, there?

There's no accounting for my sense of humor, I guess. Anyway, that's my pump action breech on the front.

hey carbon, where can you get the adhesive film you used for the stinger??
because i am interested in using it for the the shark face on my paintjob for the CAR

tell me what you think
thanks

You should be able to find transparent laser printer film at most office supply stores. You'll have a problem using it as the face, though, as printers can't print white...that would be a clear area, so it would show your paint job.

Just got the second coat of paint on it, so it's pretty much done now...it just needs a trigger guard. Here's the SNAP-1:

Really nice! Looks like a german STEN. Really nice but do you have to put the darts in from the tip of the gun? Or is there a clip

Sorry that I'm not posting pics, I will sometime later, but the Sten is NOT German, it's British. I hate it when people think that they know everything about guns and they don't.

Finally, something finished that's worth putting in the pictures thread....

Here's the finished product of the SNAP-duo, which I am now calling the SNAP-6 Leviathan

Posted by Carbon on 28 October 2007 - 05:52 PM in Homemades

It's been a while since I've had something "done" enough to post in this thread...

I've given this gun a proper name, rather than Big SNAP Ballgun. Going back to the whole bumblebee thing, I had the name Stinger lodge in my brain. So, this is the SNAP-1 Stinger.

The blaster body was covered with transparent adhesive film that was printed in a Xerox. I did this one in a solid yellow because it was the image I had in mind for it...but it worked well enought that I'll definitely be using some more complicated graphcs in the future.

Posted by Carbon on 27 July 2010 - 09:30 PM in Homemades

This is the bow I've been working on, after being inspired by Kane's recently-named AaBow at MANO. Seriously, it's the most fun I've had with a nerf gun in a long time.

Currently, it gets about 80-90 feet with a 12" CPVC barrel and 15" plunger. The bowstring is 1/16" steel cable, and the plunger rod is 1/2" CPVC, with a standard SNAP plungerhead. Brute force assembly: 1/2" CPVC + 1/2" PVC + 3/4" PVC + encap on the top.

I still want to put a two-stage hopper on it. Right now it holds 6 darts.

The SNAP/Revolution.

...because it's Number 9....Number 9...Number 9...

Also because the internals are different from any other SNAP. I'm going to war test it at SPANO, and make a thread the week after.

Thanks....although I had it pointed out to me that the clip is on the wrong side for Sten (mostly because I shoot left handed, and load right).

It's a muzzle load, but it vacuum feeds with standard Micros. My stefans need to be ramrodded, though (my FBR is too big). The clip is just dart storage, right now...although I hope to eventually work in clip feed.

Got the SNAP-4 painted...

Posted Image

It's metal flake red (which doesn't show up here) with flat black accents. This time, the bondo turned out much better. I just need to be sure to prime it in the future....

#81462 Homemades Picture Thread

Posted by Carbon on 07 May 2006 - 08:26 PM in Homemades

I actually got another one painted....the SNAP-1 mk2 from the writeup.

Posted Image

It ended up looking a little more "deadly" than I was intending. I'll be making an orange tip later on.

I used a hammered metal silver for plastic (which I really like the effect of. Nice shine, too.) The breech is painted flat black (although a wrinkle finish would have been great.) This is also the first time that I tried using Bondo to smooth out the seams. I didn't allow enough time for drying, and also applied too much at once...but for a first try, it's not bad. I'll be taking a lot more time as I work on the SNAP-4...

Proof-of-concept of the SNAP-8.
Posted Image

And with the priming handle off:
Posted Image

It's a shrunk-down version of what will be my take on the pumpSNAP: solid plunger rod, no stock, catchface at the end of the plunger rod. I built it out of spare parts and leftovers, so it ended up being...diminuative. Performance is surprising: it gets about 40-50 feet, with a plunger stroke of about 1.5 inches one inch.

#283592 Modifying A Longshot?

Posted by Carbon on 20 August 2010 - 10:59 AM in Modifications

The reason that the springs are too strong is because a [k26] is not an AR-15 spring. Look around at some gun stores for an AR-15 buffer spring.

Edit: slight grammar.

While that little bit of information is helpful it didn't answer the questions I was asking. Would a real AR-15 spring be a replacement spring or an additional spring?

In addition, like the writeup says. Polycarb answered the way he did because the writeup wasn't wrong: your spring was.

#86305 Longshot Mod

Posted by Carbon on 02 August 2006 - 11:05 AM in Modifications

Would the heavier weights on the CDTS's fix the "fishtailing" problem that I, and presumably others, have been having? I've talked with a few friends who I thought would know better than I and have gotten mixed thoughts, some say more weight at the front, others say more at the back.

Physics Time! The fishtailing that you notice is the result of a stable front-point, on the dart, combined with an unstable and irregularly shaped length trailing behind it.

Basically, the weighted front-end of the dart wants to remain in a single projected line, due to a strong moment of inertia. However, the length of foam behind it doesn't have the mass to affect a suitably strong inertia. As such, the passage of air over the foam causes the body of the dart to spin and move. Since the front end of the dart is set into a ballistic path, the weighted front-point acts as a fulcrum for the lever that the rest of the dart has become. The tail of the dart then flails as far as it can from the fulcrum point until the forces acting upon it change and cause it to move in another direction.

And that's fishtailing!

Additional physics describing fishtailing:

Fishtailing is also a symptom of having a too-short barrel. In the Longshot, it's reasonable that removing restrictors could cause fishtailing, as there's now extra power in the same length barrel. Fishtailing can begin because there is additional pressure that needs to be vented before the dart leaves the barrel. Optimum circumstances are that the barrel pressure is equalized when the dart leaves the barrel. However, if there is still high pressure, there will be a puff of air behind the dart as it leaves the barrel. This will cause the light rear end of the dart to sway to the side. The heavier tip will be unaffected, and will continue to pull in a straight line, causing the rear to wobble back and forth until equillibrium is reached and the wobble stops.

The usual cure to fishtailing is well made darts, but also either a longer barrel, or venting before the end to allow extra pressure to bleed off.

#227672 Plastic Safe Lubricants

Posted by Carbon on 02 May 2009 - 04:11 PM in General Nerf

Might as well toss in the lubricant that I've had good luck with: Xerox fuser oil. According to the specifications, it's a form of polydimethylsiloxane...essentially a silicone lubricant, but with a thicker body. It stays around much better than silicone spray ever did for me: one aplication will last me months.

Other oil-based fusers in laser printers may use similar stuff: it can be found at office supply stores.

Has anyone developed a way for rifling our barrels? (Where the inside of the tube has a spiral swirl which will force our bullets to spiral like a football when it exits the barrel)

No...because rifling isn't a benefit to nerf darts. Do a search for it, it's been discussed at length.

Holy carp! that comics said nerf on the bottom that must be talking about us.

Probably not.

#141787 The Vulcan

Posted by Carbon on 21 February 2008 - 06:44 PM in General Nerf

D batteries aren't any higher-voltage than AAs.

Thanks, I was wondering about this.

Given that Ds have the same voltage as AAs, would the fact that there are 6 batteries have any effect on the subsequent power?

Each one is 1.5 volts, and the power is additive, so 9 volts. A D battery just has a great deal of capacity (about 8000 mAh, whereas a 9 volt battery has about 400mAh)

LINK

This video is by the guy who had the info on the Nerf Eliminator set. He supposedly works for Hasbro. It was posted two days ago, but I don't know if it's been posted. He claims to have fired it and wants to give us real info...

In summary:
- Fires slowly, at most 1 shot a second, definitely not fast as some may have speculated. Think DTG or Recon fast.

Heh...trust some random talking head, or a video of it actually firing?

I'll take the video.

This is why its rate of fire is so slow, why the gun's ranges will not be affected by low battery, why it's operable without batteries and is used much like a Recon/Longshot/DTG/etc.)

ROF woud be affected by battery life. Weak batteries = less.

#141780 The Vulcan

Posted by Carbon on 21 February 2008 - 06:26 PM in General Nerf

Take a look at those guns (Mav, Firefly, DTG); they all share the same plunger. It could be argued that the LS and the Recon are high ROF guns, but the Vulcan doesn't use Streamlines. Since Hasbro tends to reuse its internals, it seems to follow that this high ROF springer would use the same guts.

I don't know about the firefly, but the mav has an inverted plunger and the DTB has a real plunger. Not the same at all.

True. I stand corrected.

EDIT: Doubly corrected. The Firefly shares a plunger with the DTG, not with the Mav....so that's positive. Anyway, Mav is the odd man out, but we have common ROF internals.....my hypothesis stands. Thanks for pointing that out, Qui'lan Fett.

#141700 The Vulcan

Posted by Carbon on 21 February 2008 - 10:07 AM in General Nerf

Here's my one conjecture post, and then I'm waiting for the blaster's release.

I’ve got a hypothesis about the mechanics of this gun, based on what we know about the current line, the pictures we’ve seen, and Hasbro’s previous trends.

Observations:
1. The shells are the barrels. This gun shoots Sonics, so there can’t be a tighter barrel in front of it. As such, the shell is the entire barrel, similar to the Mav for the Firefly.
2. The barrel is not fixed to the air supply…similar to the Mav and Firefly.
3. Hasbro likes reusing internals. Maverick, Firefly, DTG.

Hypothesis:
It’s a battery powered Maverick.

EBF can be Electric Belt Fed. It's also Electric Beltfed Firefly.

#141775 The Vulcan

Posted by Carbon on 21 February 2008 - 06:12 PM in General Nerf

I hope that it's not a battery-powered maverick. With such a big gun, why wouldn't they use a longshot plunger?

Because Hasbro doesn't using that design for their high ROF spring guns.

#140499 The Vulcan

Posted by Carbon on 15 February 2008 - 09:09 PM in General Nerf

I don't see why the hell so many people thought this was going to be a flywheel gun. It would NEVER be a flywheel gun. Nerf doesn't do flywheels, because they're not idiots (unlike BuzzBee)

Nope, they'd never do that.

#140615 The Vulcan

Posted by Carbon on 16 February 2008 - 04:25 PM in General Nerf

cost per shot?

Batteries die.

#141702 The Vulcan

Posted by Carbon on 21 February 2008 - 10:44 AM in General Nerf

To clarify, your hypothesis is that it has six "gatling" barrels in the internals? If so, I thing they'd have worked them into the external design to evoke a minigun.

No, just that the "barrels" (shells) are moving past an air source in the same fashion (and with most likely the same air delivery) as a Firefly.

#140204 The Vulcan

Posted by Carbon on 14 February 2008 - 02:40 PM in General Nerf

Interesting, Nerf markets the Vulcan as the biggest baddest blaster ever. Is that to be taken literally?

Most likely. They advertise the Longshot as the longest (and it is), so we know that they take their superlatives seriously.

Now this is what I was waiting for! Thanks for taking all the pics and getting the dissection posted so quickly. And I gotta say,

absolutely makes it. I'm really looking forward to seeing what will be possible with this!

#127304 New Nerf Blaster From Hasbro

Posted by Carbon on 25 October 2007 - 11:02 AM in News

Always cool to see a new form factor, but I'll reserve any kind of judgement until one is disassembled. The change in cocking method (rounded silver thing on top) makes me think of Buzzbee, unfortunately.

Jesus - I completely missed the second page. 50 replies in 14 hours? Gotta be some sort of NH record.

The original Longshot thread broke 60 posts in three hours. That was a little out of hand.

#91082 Nerfers Nerfing Disease

Posted by Carbon on 02 October 2006 - 05:33 PM in Off Topic

Just saw an interesting bit of news today...

Folding@Home has released a new version of the folding client which takes advantage of ATI X1900 class GPUs. According to the announcement, using the GPU can give a speed advantage of 20-30X over using just the CPU. You can read about it (and get links for download) from here.

#77061 Nerfers Nerfing Disease

Posted by Carbon on 20 March 2006 - 09:17 PM in Off Topic

Just signed up. I'm running it on two systems at home, and three at work. Course, it's more like one at home...my Mac is old enough that it'll probably finish it's first work unit by, oh, July. The other machines are a 1.3 GHz Celeron, a 1.8 GHz Xeon, and two 2.2 GHz P4s.

#91889 Nerfers Nerfing Disease

Posted by Carbon on 14 October 2006 - 10:29 AM in Off Topic

More news about the GPU client: some real-world specs are in, and great googly moogly it's fast. If you compare TFLOPs processed versus number of processssors, the GPU client is roughly two orders of magnitude faster. Makes perfect sense that processessor that is 1) optimized for floating-point and 2) doesn't have to compete for work time would be great at something like this, but it's still pretty amazing to see.

I wish I could get my new computer cranking on folding, but there isn't a Mac universal binary client yet (cranking PPC code on an Intel Mac for folding isn't worth it). Of course, I could also get the folding client running on my work computers again....

#177359 Nerfhaven Homemade Directory

Posted by Carbon on 14 September 2008 - 02:45 PM in Homemades

The key won't have that much detail. Homemades are usually a lot more flexible as far as ammo, so a complete breakdown of ammo type isn't that helpful. Marking the specific ballgun projects is helpful, just because there haven't been that many. Keep in mind, a strong airgun can be made to shoot balls with the proper barrel.

#161542 Nerfhaven Homemade Directory

Posted by Carbon on 04 July 2008 - 10:50 PM in Homemades

Question...:

Do we need to make NH threads for our guns to make the list? Or can we just post a link to the write-up on our site? I can, of course, make threads for all my homemades, but... well, up to the forum members, I guess.

By all means, send me links for off0site projects....I'll link to them from here. The only reason I don't have any non-NerfHaven projects linked is because I only really keep track of the forum here.

#176167 Nerfhaven Homemade Directory

Posted by Carbon on 09 September 2008 - 03:22 PM in Homemades

Calm down, it'll get updated shortly. Real Life is a cruel mistress.

Anyway, considering that the SNAPbow is still on the front page of Homemades, I don't think you'll have much trouble finding it.

The Directory has at long last been updated. If you find a project that was missed, drop me a PM and let me know.

Yay! Looks great! One thing though... While there may not be much call for them, I have had a devil of a time locating many threads about ballistic balls. Searching usually only picks up somewhat dirty posts by VACC from Offtopic... Could we denote which homemades are designed for them somehow?

I've thought about something along those lines, as well: using a key to denote whether a gun is spring or air power. Ammo type would be a good thing to work in there, as well. Good idea, I'll work on getting a key in place shortly.

#177665 Nerfhaven Homemade Directory

Posted by Carbon on 15 September 2008 - 10:21 PM in Homemades

The directory has been updated with a project key, which should make it much more convenient when browsing for a certain type of gun. As it turns out, there's a lot more variety than just spring and air.

Here's the key:

S: Compression Spring
E: Extension Spring (incl. bungees, surgical tubing, and metal coil)
F: Flywheel
G: Gas (CO2/combustion/etc)
A: Air
R: Ramrocket
B: Ballgun (utilizing either spring or air)

Just about the entire directory has been catalogued. As per normal, let me know if you have any corrections/suggestions/whatnot.

#202060 Nerfhaven Homemade Directory

Posted by Carbon on 09 January 2009 - 12:34 PM in Homemades

Since this thread is a sticky... I don't feel as bad about posting in it.

Anyways, while i think the key is a wonderful addition to the directory, I think it'd be a whole lot more useful if it used a unique string of some sort (ex. S (for spring) becomes Spr and E (extention spring becomes Ext). It would allow for usage of the CTRL+F function to browse all homemades that use a specific function.

Good idea! I'll add that next time I update the Directory.

EDIT: The updated project key has been added.
