#127078 Zombie Games.

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 23 October 2007 - 08:34 PM in General Nerf

I thought I would poke my head up here and sound off a little about HVZ.

Surprisingly enough, it is going on right now here at Ohio University. As Longbow said a little ways up, I have been blown away by the increase in modded guns this year. Also, a group of students have set up a base on the green and are camping there all week to simulate actual zombie survival.

For all other college students out there, I highly suggest setting up HVZ. It really is a cool way to get people excited about Nerf and it is generally a blast. We went hunting last night and almost everyone on campus knows what is going on- It also exposes you to people you may not have ever had the chance to be with.

Overall, very cool.

#128880 Eye Protection

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 06 November 2007 - 10:00 PM in General Nerf

I got hit in the mouth once when it was open. Next round, i didn't close my mouth but, i covered the darts in pepper. pepper can do anything: make food taste better, fix an instrument Have bush make a smart desicion, create world peace, sand stuff.....

Also, Pepper can seal holes in your car radiator. It worked for me this summer.

Regardless, hear hear on the eye protection. I've had a couple indoor battles where enemies would blindly point guns around corners and nail me in the eye. I've also been hit very close (too close for comfort) to the eye by airsoft pellets...and that is not a fun experience.

#130931 Ohio War Planning

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 29 November 2007 - 10:16 AM in Nerf Wars

I'm in Columbus for my Ohio University break (thanksgiving to new years!) and I've worked with Whetstone before for community events such as creek cleanings. They don't really have any regulations on events, so you'd be fine with whatever.

I'm not sure exactly what kind of battlefield you are looking for, but about a 5 minute walk down the bike path, towards Como Park, is the site of the old Amusement Park. It's along the river and has some bike ramps in a lightly forested area. My friends and I have airsofted there before with no real problems. It has some real opportunities for cover and flanking. The only issue might be that darts could easily be lost.

If you need any help with locations, let me know. Unfortunately, I only brought a Maverick home with me from school, and I may be in Toledo during the dates you mentioned, so I probably can't participate.

#131330 Ohio War Planning

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 03 December 2007 - 04:50 PM in Nerf Wars

Work got canceled today, so I decided to go out and take some pictures of possible battlefields to help everybody out. There are some really cool options for large scale nerf wars. Like I said before, I don't think I'll be in town for this war, but hopefully, I'll be around for the next one.

First off are some pictures from the area Lynx has been talking about at Whetstone park. You should note that the park is near the highway and a river, so it's pretty windy and a little loud. That being said, I still think it is an awesome battlefield.

For reference, here is the google earth picture that was posted earlier. The black circle is where I was parked (green car seen in pictures) so that should give you some reference.

Posted Image

The area that seems to be the best is the area to the left of the road and continues below the image.

Posted Image
This area has alot of open space, some cover, and many picnic tables.

Posted Image
There is a trail that runs through the area. For reference, my car is just out of view on the left hand side

Posted Image
Farther down the trail is a shelter house: It is full of picnic tables (the lighter, metal bar kind) that could easily be moved around for cover. The only issue would be that you would have to stop using them if someone has it reserved. Considering how cold it will probably be, it shouldn't be an issue.

Park Rules:

The second area is the prairie in the left center of this image: http://img206.images...etstone6po4.jpg

This area is essentially a path through tall grass with many areas to hide and take cover. I imagined some sort of escort the VIP scenario where one group must defend the pass while the other attempts to traverse it. It's about a 2 minute walk from the parking lot and you can see parts of the first area I posted from it.

Map of the prairie area:
Posted Image

Posted Image
View from the entrance to the path.

Posted Image
Along the path. The areas on both sides are mostly dry and not very muddy. There is also sufficient room to walk through the bramble without crushing anything.

Finally, the third area is the one I referenced earlier in the thread. This is located at Como park, which is accessible from W. Lakeview Avenue, which is only a few streets farther down High Street from Whetstone park. The parks are actually accessible through the bike path, but driving is much more practical. Parking is at the bottom of the street and there is a little walk from there.

Posted Image
View from the parking lot. The trail to the area is in the back left.

Posted Image
The trail. Follow in forward for a short distance.

Posted Image
This is the trail to the area. it follows the river and goes all the way to the end of the forested area. It makes the whole area fairly accessible. Sometimes, someone will walk a dog in this direction, but even a dog walker wouldn't interrupt the game.

Posted Image
The trial. The playing area is everything to the left of the trail

Posted Image
Me in the area-- There are some dirt ramps built for BMX bikes, and one of the small bowls would make a good defensive position. Many of the trees are easily climbable too. The path that runs through the area is fairly open, but allows for choke points near some of the bramble.

Posted Image
View from one of the trees

Posted Image
Sort of an area overview.

I have to say, if the weather stays how it is, it is going to be a COLD battle. Overall, I think the first location is pretty cool-- it's the most accessible and is usable for many types of games. The prairie has some potential for cool battles--but I think it is somewhat dependent on how many people are participating. The third location is great because it is very close to civilization, yet you are really sort of isolated and you don't need to worry about people getting in your way.

Hopefully this was of some help. I'm hoping the turn out is good and we can do another one when I am around sometime. Let me know if you need anything else.

#131332 Supermaxx 3000 Valve Problems

I recently purchases a SM3k (for $0.90 no less) and I've been having the same problems you mentioned. Thanks for posting this-- I'm excited that I will be able to fix what I had already written off as a lost cause.

Time to get some more plumbers goop...

#131355 Official X Box 360 Gamertag Thread

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 03 December 2007 - 08:38 PM in Off Topic

Gamertag= Jedijoe9

Games played: Halo 3, Gears of War, Team Fortress 2, Call of Duty 2, Counter Strike (original xbox)

Tomorrow is the dashboard update that adds a "Friends of Friends" option. PA has a "clan" workaround here. http://www.penny-arcade.com/2007/11/30 (scroll down to "a clan idea") Essentially, we could have a "group" of nerfers that could easily gather together for games. If anyone is interested, let me know and I'd be willing to set it up.

#131410 Ohio War Planning

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 04 December 2007 - 07:18 PM in Nerf Wars

The last one he posted looks very interesting, although I'd worry about the river (we had someone fall into the creek where we played back in October). We can even switch throughout the day, since a majority of us will be driving as well.

The river is only near the edge of the playing area- We never had a problem with it during airsofting. I have been swimming in the river though (that was a unique experience)

Let's set a date. I'm flexible. So, weekend of Dec. 29th/30th, or Jan. 5th/6th?

If it is the weekend of the 5th and 6th, I may be able to play, so I vote for that one.

#131683 What Do Other People Think Of Nerf?

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 08 December 2007 - 03:11 PM in General Nerf

I started buying nerf guns because of our school's Humans versus Zombies game last year, although I had previously owned a warthog and participated in large house battles in high school.

Now, many of my friends are really interested in nerfing because of me talking about it so much. My girlfriend wants more nerf guns (I bought her a maverick last year for christmas) and many of my friends get me nerf related gifts/want to nerf with me. I think that HVZ has made nerf very accessible here at OU and it is widely accepted at school as a cool thing to do.

Now that I am home for break, my 10 year old sister loves playing with the guns and my parents just wonder why I order plastic tubing on the internet. (PETG came in today...yahoo!)

#132013 Disc Shot

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 11 December 2007 - 12:23 AM in General Nerf

I've seen that set at various Targets and Wal Marts for around $30.00. I'm nt sure if it was local or what, but for a few days, the Columbus Toys R' Us was offering the disk shot or a magstrike for $20.00. I bought up a magstrike but passed on the disk shot.

But you do not need to buy that unless you want the actual thing that launches the discs

Are the disks soft or are they some sort of hard plastic? I kind of want to mount the disk launcher on a bigger gun if it is at all safe...although on second thought, that is probably not nerf approved ordinance.

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 16 December 2007 - 03:45 PM in General Nerf

Man, the box looks pretty darn awesome.

On my quest for one today, I found the two Target's close to me in Columbus (Graceland and Lennox) both do not have any Recon's in stock. My friend that works at TRU will be checking to see if their latest shipment had any as soon as his break is over.

Good news! Our family Christmas plans have been moved around and I will be available for the 29th. Unfortunately, all of my nerf stuff is at school, so I'll be using a pretty basic magstrike and a modded NF only, but who cares! I'm just excited to play. Also, I'll be bringing a car, so I can move some people around as needed.

So what kind of armaments will people be using?

I just started modding guns over the last month, so I'll have:

Magstrike: Basic mods
LBB: Single'ed with PVC
Nitefinder: Barrel replacement and minimized.

Also, I've only got stock darts (mainly taggers)

Even so, I am pretty excited for the war. What time will it be? also, where exactly are we going to play/what are we playing (ctf, etc)

#134283 Recon Close Up

Where did you guys happen to find one of these? I didn't see them on Target's website and the only one on amazon was like $45 And wow a $20 price tag.

Though somebody walked out of the nerf aisle with the last 3 recons as I was entering it, I do believe Toys R Us now has them on shelves. Some people were guessing earlier that it would be more expensive, but it is also $20.00

#136465 Lancer

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 19 January 2008 - 12:01 PM in Modifications

I have to say when I saw the topic title, I hoped for a GOW lancer, but I assumed nobody would ever try to make one. Looks like it is my lucky day.

I was in the process of building a realistic looking model of a Lancer right around Halloween, but scrapped it because I got busy. I'm thinking this might be the way to go instead- It looks absolutely awesome...and it;s functional. Plus, that has to be one of the most detailed write ups I have seen.

The end of the video made me absolutely giddy too. I wish more people did projects like this. Nice job!

#136804 Cloverfield...

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 21 January 2008 - 09:12 PM in Off Topic

I'm a sucker for survival/disaster movies, so this probably isn't too surprising, but I really enjoyed it. Our culture is obsessed with recording everything and I think the movie really played off of that- Obviously, the fact that the whole movie is a recording, but there are more subtle things too. (for example: all of the people taking cell phone pictures of the statue's head in the middle of some city wide emergency)

Although the first person camera view made me feel sick at times, it makes more an interesting movie-- I really liked the clips from Coney Island mixed in too- it made for an interesting way to change the pace of the movie (was it just me, or did something fall into the ocean when they were recording on the Carousel?)

Personally, I thought the lice-like small forms of the monster were the scariest. Their bites cause you to essentially explode? Crazy!

#136808 Luckiest Day Of My Life

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 21 January 2008 - 09:49 PM in General Nerf

So the luckiest day of your life was the day you found some RFR's for about standard price in a Wal Mart? Congrats, I suppose, but it sounds like you haven't had many lucky days...

The 89 cent EAB is pretty cool though. It always struck me as an aesthetically neat blaster even if it wasn't too functional. Nice job on that one.

The FAQ really is illuminating. I felt like it answered every question I had.

Here is the link, in case anyone else wants to read it: http://imdb.com/title/tt1060277/faq

Also, I thought this was pretty hilarious

On Hud's official viral Myspace.com page his height was changed on the day following the movie's debut to 2'6" implying that his lower body has been severed from his upper body and all that remains is 2'6" of his upper body.

#137811 Who Wants Some Recon Rebuild?

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 30 January 2008 - 01:55 PM in Modifications

Nice Job! I think the finished product really looks awesome.

Two questions:

Can you still fit the front "barrel extension" piece on the gun? and if so, how does it look?

How comfortable is it to hold? It seems like it would be a little front heavy to hold with one hand, but it also doesn't look like there is a comfortable way to hold it two handed.

#138676 Should I Get The Recon?

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 04 February 2008 - 09:31 PM in General Nerf

Honestly, the Recon is no beast, but it is extremely fun. The different parts make it flexible and the clip system makes it fairly useful, but to me, the main draw is that it is plain fun. It sort of brings me back to my nerf roots, where nerf products had wonky add ons that made the gun look cool even if they were fairly useless.

I would suggest buying one. It's fun!

I'll most likely be working in Athens all summer, but I should be able to make it up for a war or two.

If we wanted to do a summer war in Athens, the city is almost empty. I should be able to house everyone too. Just throwing that out there.

#139932 Ohno (s)

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 13 February 2008 - 01:17 PM in Nerf Wars

I'm fairly sure Peter lives in Missouri and he was around just for Christmas.

Either way, I was proposing the Athens war for sometime in the summer. Right now, everything is iced over and I don't really feel like going out to get pictures. If the weather gets above 20 anytime soon, I'll get on it. Frankly, it's probably easier for me to go to Columbus than a ton of people to go to Athens, so let's just sort of leave it as a backup for now.

No matter where we do it, I do propose, though, that we are a bit more organized. Maybe deciding as a group what to do in the morning and afternoon, when we break for lunch, etc. Nothing set in stone, just a bit of structure so we kind of know what is going on.

Don't hold me to this, but there is a possibility I could make it to a war on the weekend of 3/29-30th and if so, possibly give people (namely lynx) a ride to Dayton. That field looks pretty awesome and I think we owe you Cincy guys one for coming to Columbus.

Truthfully, it all depends on how fast I can backpack from Athens to Columbus (my spring break plans)

#140063 What Was Your First Nerf Gun?

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 13 February 2008 - 09:09 PM in General Nerf

I had a Warthog and a Bow 'n' Arrow. Unfortunately, I can't find either of them anymore.

I had a neighbor with a Crossbow. He actually got a second one just for the arrows and I bet that second one is sitting in a garage somewhere now, unused.

Good times.

#140739 Recon Shoulder Stock Rebuild With Spring Integration And Shotgun Mod.

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 17 February 2008 - 02:20 AM in Modifications

Nice Job! It's clean, functional, and awesome. Like I said before, the Recon is just plain fun, and I think your mods put the fun back in functional (wow, I can't believe I just typed that)

A couple questions:

What did you make the new foregrip pieces out of? (and is there any chance for a template?)
How difficult is it to remove the barrel extension? (for example, for a pistol's only round or something)

#141168 Easy Lbb Shotgun Modification

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 18 February 2008 - 10:24 PM in Modifications

It's a good idea and it looks pretty damn cool, but like sputnik said, there is so much dead space in the design that a ton of power is wasted.

I wonder if there would be a way to use elbows, couplings, etc to direct the air straight to the mav turret. Maybe something like this, but with the CPVC going through the turret instead of how Z-man12 did it.

#141748 Nitefinder Rifle Mod

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 21 February 2008 - 04:12 PM in Modifications

But does anyone know if a poplar dowel rod will be strong enough to hold the BBB spring, or if it will even fit in the catch

I've tried using a dowell rod as a plunger rod before, but to no success. Part of the problem is that it is cylindrical, so unless you can find a way to keep it from spinning, you have to make sure it can catch the whole way around. That makes it much weaker and more likely to snap.

It might work if you could find a length of wood that is square and around the same measurements as a stock plunger rod, though.

#142436 "phun"

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 24 February 2008 - 09:13 PM in Off Topic

"Phun" is this 2D physics game that has been wasting a ton of my time recently. I usually fire up the soundtrack to Katamari Damacy, start the program, and emerge from my room hours later like some sort of cracked out physics junkie.

It's really quite fun, though. The program allows of a bunch of different kind of physics demonstrations and includes things such as ragdolls, car crashes, and catapults. It probably even has some educational uses, but I've mainly been using it as a time waster (believe me, it works well) It's still a beta, so it's a bit buggy, but not enough to stop it from being enjoyable.

The link to the program is: http://www.acc.umu.s...milk/index.html

Also, as sort of a challenge to the NIC: Who can make the best nerf gun out of Phun? It has a spring function and I was trying to sort of emulate a springer. Once you import this file into Phun, you need to use the drag tool to pull the spring back and see how far you can fling the dart. Here is mine:
http://rapidshare.co...1/Nerf.phn.html

So let's see what you've got!

(Once you save your file, it will be a ".phn" file. The default directory is "C:\Program Files\Phun\Scenes"
I'm using rapidshare to upload mine, and it's a whole 8 KB, so it should be pretty easy to put yours up)

#142439 "phun"

Posted by Jedijoe9 on 24 February 2008 - 09:27 PM in Off Topic

I didn't have any problems with the install, but I did have some slowdowns once it was installed.

As a general tip for the program: it seems that the farther you zoom in, the quicker the program runs.
