#216416 Cell Phone Gun Sight Idea...

Posted by Vimes on 05 March 2009 - 12:52 AM in Modifications

...when your eye is the most complex optical viewing system created by man?

Really? Man created the eye? Did not know that.

But seriously, why look at a little tiny screen at something that is less than 80 feet away?

As before, so it is now.

I'm coming.

I say this: stefans are a must. I haven't made washer stefans myself, but from CS's writeup they seem no less safe than normal stefans. How heavy do you think those washers are?

Maybe we should try the old "if you can take a point blank shot in the family jewels from it you can use it" method, or something like that. Any way...lets not get too caught up in the banning of guns. This is our first major war here in Texas so lets make it fun and try to accommodate as many people as possible.

We're on our way people!

Ugh, I feel for the people who play ball on that baseball field.

You should contact the school and just touch base with them, ask them if its ok. I know it'll be in summer and school wont be in session, but its just good business. That way the whole people calling cops thing wont be as big a deal, should it happen at all.

Draconis - I think you may have missed something...ranges, after everything has been aligned perfectly, are around 30 feet, not 5 feet.

A side of nerf - actually its not too bad. Imagine one of those hand workout grip things...a little harder than that.

Kyrativ - yeah the bushing is a little long. It will get trimmed and possibly replaced with something else should there be a Mk3.

Silencer - Its 1-1/8 ID polycarbonate tubing; length is 2-3/8. I got the grips online at vintagegungrips.net. Its a bit expensive for a nerf gun, but I was weak. Good luck with the drum (or "turret") dude. I have a few ideas floating around so we'll see how it goes.

Thanks guys, I think its pretty cool myself.

Ok last quote ever, I swear: "A special Hell..."

#204817 The Nerf Schofield

L0pper - Ranges are in the mid twenties. The hammer needs to be re-cut to give it the full travel distance. Its off by about a 64th.

Nerf Bros - Uhhh....I'll keep it mind.

MSDFS - Another good one:
"Drugged by God!"
"No, by Baldrick actually, but the effect is much the same."

Posted by Vimes on 07 January 2009 - 12:32 PM in Homemades

Rork has hit the proverbial nail on the head. Quite a bit goes into one of these.

I honestly didn't think anyone would want to buy these, but I guess there are some Old West lovers out there like me. I'll be ordering from Mcmaster today or tomorrow and I'll sit down to make one and see how long it takes. It took a good bit of time for the first one, but now that I've got all the parts finalized it shouldn't be more than a day.

I've actually ordered an old Schofield grip and it should be here in a few days. From that I should be able to fabricate some. for less than what I payed.

As soon as I get Office back on my computer I'll get the templates up. Don't worry, I will get them up.

#201049 The Nerf Schofield

Posted by Vimes on 04 January 2009 - 02:39 PM in Homemades

I'll be getting more supplies later this week and I'll come up with a parts list and so forth. As for selling these...They wouldn't be cheap. I believe the parts cost 25 to 30 dollars. I'll work out some figures later, but for now, what might people be will to pay for these?

Extremely well done! I have to say the purple is the best shade of said color I've ever seen, quite close to the BBB purple. What brand is it?

Once again, great job!

#200695 The Nerf Schofield

Posted by Vimes on 02 January 2009 - 09:53 PM in Homemades

Well, I've been tweaking.
I replaced the spring with a slightly longer one( a half coil longer) and added some tightening rings to the barrel.

Ranges have gone up to:
26'
27' 5"
24' 3"
31' 2"
28' 8"

Not too shabby

I decided I'm going to leave this blaster the way it is now and save my other tweaks for Mk2. Which I'll get up here as soon as I get some more Polycarb. Gonna hit up a couple of sign shops tomorrow, see what I can find.

Iron Man rules!

#200426 The Nerf Schofield

Posted by Vimes on 02 January 2009 - 01:13 AM in Homemades

Ok so its not Saturday, but here's the video anyway.

I'll get a range video up maybe tomorrow or Sat.

The distance to the cans is about 8' and yes, its Iron Man! And no, I'm not a great shot.

A few things I've noticed while taking the video is that the less used the darts the better the shot. While that's probably true for all blasters, for the Schofield it means a tighter fit is great. With that in mind I will be trying a slightly longer barrel with tightening rings.

Sputnik and Hammer - Just south west of Austin actually, a little farther west than Oak Hill.

#200328 The Nerf Schofield

Posted by Vimes on 01 January 2009 - 09:37 PM in Homemades

Thanks for the compliments everyone.

Heh...about that 1 inch plunger travel...it got smaller. Yeah, its at about half an inch right now.

Posted Image

I think it has to do with the seal and the spring, especially the spring. It is of similar size to the +bow spring, just a little bit larger in diameter and wire size. The seal is really just about as perfect as it can be, considering the angle it starts from.

Posted Image
Posted Image

I'm going to shorten the bushing that the barrel sets in by a half inch and increase the spring length a little. That way I can get the whole inch of travel.

Oh, my darts are 1.25 inch, just in case anyone was wondering.

#200317 The Nerf Schofield

Posted by Vimes on 01 January 2009 - 09:01 PM in Homemades

Good evening everyone. I apologize for leaving it so long, but now I'm back and designing like mad.
I have finished the Schofield to the point of working. It still needs some cosmetic work though, but it is fully functional.

Posted Image

Posted Image

The barrel is 1 inch of 17/32 brass nested inside 1.25 inch of 9/16 brass. I think I may try a few more barrel setups. One would be making the 9/16 brass a little longer. The other would be to add a few tightening rings to the 17/32 brass.

Ranges were unexpectedly good, for the plunger size.
18' 10"
22' 4"
27'
23' 10"
23' 6"

Ave: about 23 feet

I am thrilled with how it turned out. I am working on improving construction, hopefully I can squeeze a few more feet out of it! I'll try to get a video up on Sat.

Happy new year!

#182393 No...really...this Is A Nerf Grenade

Posted by Vimes on 08 October 2008 - 01:50 PM in General Nerf

Yeah, I couldn't get a good pic from that angle. There
are posts in the barrels and as far as I can tell there are
some kind of ARs down in there.

Honestly, I'm not sure how well a barrel replacement would
work. The barrel half is glued on and I'm not sure the best way
to get it off, probably cut it or pry it, but that might hit the pump chamber.
Its a very compact little bitch. I'm going to clean off the sides and find
the seam to see if it can be cut.

I just hate it when they glue a gun shut!

#182325 The Nerf Schofield

Posted by Vimes on 07 October 2008 - 11:32 PM in Homemades

Jedi- The overriding factor in the length of the plunger
is the type of catch. Since it rotates it limits the length of
linear travel. Now, a longer rotation radius would lengthen
the plunger travel, but then it starts to look a little ridiculous.

The barrel in the pics is merely there to be seen. Once I get
the trigger system working I'll set up the real barrel.

rork- Thanks, I really worked to get it to look just right.

#182303 The Nerf Schofield

Posted by Vimes on 07 October 2008 - 10:29 PM in Homemades

N9- Yes, I stated in the first post the barrel will be no longer than 2", nested
in 1/2" PVC. I'm trying this setup because I want to stick close
to the original dimensions of the Schofield.

NM- its a cut off of a spring from Mcmaster. A slightly larger diameter one than the one CS recommends.

Thanks L0pper, so do I.

#182296 The Nerf Schofield

Posted by Vimes on 07 October 2008 - 10:13 PM in Homemades

Much the same way as the real gun only without the boom. The hammer pulls the plunger head back until the the trigger clears the hammer. Trigger will be pulled forward by a spring thus holding the plunger head at the ready. I'll get a picture in a minute.

Here we go:

This with the plunger head pulled back.

So, I give you my Schofield, Mk1.

Thanks Captain Slug for being awesome and writing that beginners guide to plastics.

Now, to set this straight, I don't expect ranges over 15 feet. granted some might say
it's a lot of work for not much, but I like building things. Journey, end, old saying...yeah.

I began wanting to replicate Mal Reynolds' pistol from Firefly.
Posted Image
(image found through google)

After a first, rather pathetic attempt which died, I let the idea lie for a while until
I watched 3:10 to Yuma and saw Charlie Prince and his Schofields. After that I went searching and found some pictures of the gun.
Posted Image
(image found through google)
This and a really nifty drawing of the internals, which I now can't find, were the ones I used.

Plunger travel is about 7/8". Yes. Tiny. I know.
The barrel you see is only temporary. The real one will be approximately 1.5 to 2 inches of 9/16 brass, nested in 1/2" PVC.

I'll update as I near completion, but for now, any questions?

#182285 No...really...this Is A Nerf Grenade

Posted by Vimes on 07 October 2008 - 09:11 PM in General Nerf

I got one and yes, it is tricky to get them to land nose down. On the
other hand the blast radius was excellent, well over 5 feet. With some
kind of barrel replacement and half stefens it would be fantastic. I got the
foam cover off, only way was to rip it, but don't rip it all the way down like I did.

Pictures:

After that I removed all the screws I could find(a grand total of four) and this is what I got:
Posted Image
Yeah I know, big difference.

I think I'm going to have to do some cutting, see how much deeper I can get into it.

Hope this helped.

I spotted this at an HEB here in Texas. I thought about getting one but I didn't have
the cash. May have to cough some up though.

They were 9.95.

Really? You saw these in Austin? Which HEB was it? I may be interested in picking one of these up, if they have ok range.

The one at the Y in Oak Hill. They also had Lanard Over Under twin packs, Tommy 12s, and some other Buzz Bee stuf.

Thanks for the help guys.

#179731 The New Hereti Corp. Assault Rifle

I thought about that, but the Zap-a-gap separates from the brass, not the plastic.
After the last break I cleaned both surfaces and then roughed the brass a little,
using a dremel. Its still drying so I'll see how it works. Is it possible to use too much Zap-a-gap?

Hereticorp: Hey man, I really like the mod and I have one question about

had any problems with that breaking, or did you supplement the CA glue
with something else?

Thanks.

#136544 The Snap-5

Posted by Vimes on 19 January 2008 - 09:42 PM in Homemades

I used 2 CS-9173(?) springs glued together and put a peice of 1" PVC in the Plunger chamber-behind where the plunger head is when cocked- to support the springs.

Thats a good way to keep the force of the plunger linear.
Hmm...I have an idea, but I can't explain it very well. I'll make a prototype tomorrow if I've got the material and post a pic.

Perhaps if you used 1/2" PVC instead of 1", Carbon, it would fit over the spring better.

#136530 The Snap-5

Posted by Vimes on 19 January 2008 - 08:19 PM in Homemades

Very nice Carbon!

I like the charge rod idea. I usually cut slots in the side of the plunger
housing and run a peg through the gun to slide the plunger back and forth.
This is a much easier design and, like you said, its perfect for the inline clip!

Excellent improvements!!

#133313 Homemades Picture Thread

Posted by Vimes on 21 December 2007 - 04:36 PM in Homemades

Hi all. I’ve been lurking on the Haven for about a year and I thought it was time to contribute my homemade.

This is my fourth working homemade:

Posted Image

Total Length: 40.5 in.
Plunger travel: 3 in.
Barrel length: 9 in.
Range: 65 to 75 ft.

I’m not sure if it’s a new concept, but the magazine
moves with the bolt while the barrel remains in a fixed position, allowing me to
get the dart as close to the plunger tube as possible

I'm very pleased with this gun, but the ranges fell a little short of my expectations.
Ah well, improvements to add to the next project.

Happy Christmas!
