The discs that these new blasters use appear to be miniaturized Frisbee discs. This would probably explain the satisfying range seen here.
As far as I can tell, the only other relevant information released here is a picture of all the other blasters.

Alternatively, the stock spring could be really stretched.
Then just remove the spring rest and replace the spring. This would give a good inch or two more space for the spring to rest in and compress.

I have a Doit Best store around me, but was unable to find any compression springs during my recent tour of the store. Perhaps it was their bad selection, or maybe they just ran out, I don't know. For future reference, what general area of the store did you find your springs in?

If you did stretch it, then that could very well be your problem. Mine is a bit less than 4 3/4'' long, stock. If yours is longer by much, it's been stretched.

Everything looks like it should work, I don't see any problems from the pictures that you have provided. Is the catch spring in the gun?
If so, try taking the [main] spring out, closing the gun, and pulling out the reverse plunger manually to see if it catches. If it does, then something may have collapsed in the barrel. If not, open it back up, and track the plunger's movement through the catch until it cannot be pulled back any more, and should have gotten caught already. Maybe the catch plate is worn down.
Edit: I just remembered that I had a few occurrences like this a while back when messing with my recon. It turned out that the catch plate was simply not positioned correctly.

It would also work if you tape the two double clips together, so that when one goes empty, take it out and flip it around and BAM.
Or you could put them next to each other, and tape them together with like a block of wood or something in between them. Take it out, move it over an inch, put it back in.

Very cool. Maybe you could make the end of the inline clip close when the pump is forward, and open when it's pumped back, like the breech. It should solve the problem of any darts falling out.

If you're only getting 20', add more bands. It won't hurt it as long as you've taped the firing pin. Most of the time, any K'nex gun is not going to work perfectly right off the bat, They need to be messed with a little bit to get them to work properly.

They do, but they are a pain to make on 200+ rods. Wrapping might have the same effect, and will be easier to make. Still experimenting though.

Yes, the ammo is made of plastic, but stefans have hot glue tips, which hurt equally as much. A problem that I have come by most often is how the K'nex rods flip frantically through the air once they reach a certain point after they've been shot. I've been experimenting with ways of helping this, such as adding e-tape to the front of a rod to weigh down the front end like the lead weights or bbs do in stefans. So far, results have been quite promising.
