Just saw this was posted here, moving it to the main page.  Adding some photos from when we were all sharing them back in March, hope that's okay.

#364570 What Happened to NerfHaven

Posted by Langley on 06 May 2020 - 11:58 AM in General Nerf

I checked and it looks like the graph is right but the annotations are wrong.  The leveling out part is when Talio shut down sign up:

http://nerfhaven.com...ion-fast-track/

Then the hack happened:

http://nerfhaven.com...1010-were-back/

Then FNG started:

http://nerfhaven.com...sorted-fuckery/

So the steepest part of the incline is probably some combination of Forsaken Angel or Uin13 posting a link to nerfhaven on their youtube channel, a different admin taking over membership approval and possibly approving more accounts, and possibly also automated spambots attempting to join and never getting purged.  Then it levels off when Talio stopped accepting new members without an email application.  Then when I opened membership again with the FNG system, it steadily increased at about the same rate as it did in the mid-2000s. It started to level out around mid 2017.  Membership numbers during that time are probably more to do with things like the Captcha on the sign up page breaking.  You'd have to look at new posts to get a real idea of activity on the site.

A couple of notes about the way you're collecting info:

Registration date is not the date members were approved under the old system or graduated to members under the fng system.  It's just the date they signed up.

Your numbers only include people who were members when you collected the data.  Members in the 'waiting' group and FNGs who never posted got purged if they hadn't logged in within a year.  Anyone left after that by definition must have posted at some point, or at least actively logged in recently.  I performed another one of these purges within the last couple of weeks.

Anyway, I've interpreted data that you painstakingly assembled about the history of a dead internet forum, and I read my own writing from 10 years ago.  Now I need a beer and a shower, so thanks for that.

That graph doesn't look right.  For one, there was a period of around a year just before the hack when registration was closed.

I updated the start time and location from your facebook page.  Please fix it if anything needs to be corrected.  Would also be helpful to know where to go in the park and how to get to the staging area.

#361131 Homemade Blaster Survey

#360842 Armageddon XVIII: SoCal's Largest NIC War (6/24/17) NOW RECAPPING

Posted by Langley on 29 June 2017 - 12:48 PM in Nerf Wars

  • I turned the corner at the wrong time and got hit point-blank range in the chin by a home-made blaster with an slug I think? Either way, that's my "Purple Heart" story of the war!

I am SO sorry about that. You had been sticking your gun out from the corner, and I was waiting for you to do that again, but then you popped your face out at the same height and I didn't think before squeezing the trigger. All I saw was your glasses fall halfway off, and I thought I nailed you in the eye point-blank. Glad you were okay.

co-host

I didn't do anything other than amplify your voice. I'm not your co-host, I'm your bullhorn.

JLego and I figured out how to break the two-team carpe round by taking balls out of the other team's bucket and not moving them to reduce their score to zero.

Rule suggestion: Once you pick up a ball, you have to carry it until you are hit, or you are able to drop it into a bucket, or you can hand it off to someone without a ball. So you could still have taken balls out of our bucket, but you'd have to just distribute them among yourselves and then go on kamikaze runs towards your bucket to get rid of them.

Clicker deathmatch ("clickbait," maybe, per someone's suggestion) works really well at a war of this size.

My vote is for 'Click of Death'

#360791 Armageddon XVIII: SoCal's Largest NIC War (6/24/17) NOW RECAPPING

Posted by Langley on 26 June 2017 - 12:57 PM in Nerf Wars

***Recap Starts HERE***

I'll post more when I'm not frantically re-packing my bags and preparing for my flight, but I just wanted to say thanks Ice9 for hosting another great Armageddon.  It was nice to meet some people I've been talking to on the internet for over a decade, and lots of new faces as well.  The war ran really smoothly, and everyone was super cooperative and helpful. Some things that were striking to me were how well the playing card team distribution worked, and how thorough and quick the final dart sweep was.

Apoc will be at Joe Palaia Park in Tinton Falls on the first Saturday in August.  There will be superstock rounds then, but it will mainly be an NIC war.  I'm originally from Middletown, but I now live near Tom's River and generally host NIC style wars in North Brunswick when I host.

#357316 Nerf for child without arms

Posted by Langley on 26 December 2016 - 02:00 AM in General Nerf

There is a lot of information about rewiring a rapidstrike as well as controlling one with an arduino.  If you already have an electronic switch that his son can easily activate, you just need to rewire it, as long as the switch is rated for whatever current the RS is operating at.  Using an arduino to control the motors would allow you to connect more elaborate sensors for activation, like EMG (electromyography) sensors, which are used to sense muscles tensing just like in a medical grade prosthesis.

I'm not sure how he would aim, but you mentioned something about his armpit, so I'm guessing he has something there if not fully formed arms.  Depending on that, a properly adjusted shoulder strap might be enough to get the job done.  Swapping out magazines and reloading could be a challenge, but then I've seen kids born without arms do some amazing things with their feet, so who knows.  What I do know is that one of the best Nerfers I've every played with was born with one arm and that really hasn't given him any trouble.  If that sample size of 1 is any indication, this kid is going to be a beast on the field.

Edit: There's also the Rival Zeus, which uses balls instead of darts.  It's easier to reload and there are modifications to extend the magazine to hold a practically infinite amount of ammo.  The only issue I can think of is that while it's electric like the rapidstrike, I believe the trigger is still mechanical.  I haven't used one myself, so I'm not sure what it would take to get one on a remote trigger.

Steps to reproduce the error on my end would be ideal.  Also, if it may be a caching issue the best thing to do would be to clear your cache completely and see if the problem persists.  Instructions on how to do that can be found here: http://www.refreshyo...he.com/en/home/

#355838 Wye not?

Posted by Langley on 27 August 2016 - 03:02 AM in Darts and Barrels

Here's a discussion about what an RSCB is. You might find that is way easier to make, it just requires you to point your blaster down between shots or kind of flick it to position the next dart in place.

I once tried the design you describe here, and in addition to having the alignment problems mysterio describes, I also had a lot of double-feeds. I think the distance between the barrel and the air inlet encourages double-feeds.

Here are some attempts to make homemade wyes that are a little closer to the real thing.

Also, FlexPVC ships internationally, and had pretty decent prices especially when you buy in bulk.  You could always get enough to distribute to other nerfers in AUS and make all your money back.

War is tomorrow.  Keep an eye out for signs leading the way to the new staging area in the grove, and bring $10 if you want to buy a pair of bandannas and did not get in on the preorder.

Edit: Also bring Draconis rockets and barrels if you have them, and if anyone has a chronograph they can bring please PM me about it.

Weather is looking like rain and possible thunder storms. Be prepared to play in heavy rain. Bring a change of clothing and wear clothing and footwear that dries quickly. If there is a risk of lightning strikes in the area, we will suspend play temporarily, and resume half an hour after lightning is no longer observed. There is no rain date, and the war will proceed as planned regardless of weather conditions.

#354917 FDL-1: Fully 3D Printed Robotic Blaster

Posted by Langley on 10 July 2016 - 01:07 PM in Homemades

Anyway, I posted about this on reddit a few months back and got slammed with criticism.

That's a shame.  I think you'll find we're a lot more receptive to people who actually try to build things here.  We get a bad wrap because we can be a little hard on new members, but never when they lead with a post about something they have built.  I expect that if you get any criticism it would be of the constructive variety.

As far as making it mag-fed, I think mags are waaay overrated.  People who only play stock/superstock don't know what they are missing when it comes to hoppers and being able to reload on the fly without swapping out mags or carrying a bunch of extra plastic and tactical gear.  I would recommend something like a hopper, but it sounds like you already have a configuration where it's easy to load on the fly, which is great.  Having a little more capacity would be nice, but that's a given.

#354758 Easy Backpressure Blaster & Foam Launcher Of Wonder

Posted by Langley on 01 July 2016 - 10:02 PM in Homemades

what? nothing here is explained very well at all.

Yeah, I don't disagree with that, but I think I get it.  It would help if the parts list were included, but it could definitely be explained better.

So I think the thing on the bottom of the big Tee is just a pressure guage, that through me off a bit.

The tee serves as an airtank.  When you pump the blaster, air flows through the trigger valve, and into this assembly, pushing the dart (piston) forward through the smaller rubber washer until the top of the dart seals against the larger rubber washer on the other side of the tee.  Then I assume air leaks around the back of the dart into the tee until the tank is pressurized.  When you pull the trigger, the trigger valve switches from 'pump -> tank' to 'tank -> vent'.  The dart is sucked backwards by the pressure differential, unsealing the tank and hopefully venting it's pressure into the barrel faster than it can leak back through the trigger valve.

The biggest flaw I see with this design is that the smaller rubber washer is the only thing aligning the dart.  If the dart slides forward and doesn't seal with the larger washer, you're fucked.  Also the larger rubber washer should probably have a metal washer backing it, so that it doesn't deform as pressure builds and flex away from the dart.

#354717 Plusbow Rev. 3

Posted by Langley on 30 June 2016 - 03:48 PM in Homemades

Yeah, that looks great.  I'd probably want to extend that third rod all the way to the front of the grip so it can be attached to it at more than one point.

What tools do you have?

Ugh, I am so done with Photobucket.  I only used it because I had the app on my phone and didn't feel like posting to NH on mobile.  Uninstalling that right now.

I hardly have anything other than some clamps and a coping saw, but my parents' retirement community has a really well equipped woodshop I've been taking advantage of.  To make the box I used two different band saws (one has a very wide blade and a fence for resawing) and a belt sander.  I also used a router on the base.

#354706 Plusbow Rev. 3

Posted by Langley on 30 June 2016 - 01:30 PM in Homemades

Looks good, can't wait for the writeup.  Any plans to add pump-action?

My biggest complaint with the earlier revisions is that the stock is very wobbly and easy to twist.  It could add a lot of stability to the stock if there were a third support extending diagonally from the bottom of the pistol grip to the bottom of the butt plate.  JLego's plusbow variants all have something along those lines and their stocks are solid as a rock.

PS - I'm just going to say it right here and now. The LGLF logo is the best logo I have ever designed, for any group or organization, period.

Every time I drink with Ted and I get a little too sloshed he tries to talk me into getting it as a full-sized chest tattoo to match the t-shirts.  And every time I get a little too close to actually doing it.

Here's the LGLF logo over the years, and some work Groove shared with us while he was working on the current iteration.

#354638 Looking back at 14 years in the LGLF...

Posted by Langley on 28 June 2016 - 02:25 PM in Off Topic

14 years ago today, I met up with my friend Fred from highschool and we modified a nerf blaster, committed an act of petty larceny, and signed up for a Geocities account.  The blaster was actually a Super Soaker XP 150 modified to shoot nerf darts, the theft was a garden gnome from the garage-sale addicted hoarder down the street, and the Geocities account was for the LGLF homepage.  5 weeks later we joined up with one of my nephews (Left Nut) and found ourselves at the first annual Apocalypse nerf war, where we met Vacc and Spoon (the original founders of NerfHaven), One Man Clan, and the members of the Lawn Chair Mafia nerf clan.  A couple of weeks after that we hosted our own war, and called it GnomeFEST.  We were the baddest group of toy-gun-toting dorks in New Jersey.

Langly.JPG

Over the next few years I met Talio and we all went on a road trip down to the D.C. area to nerf with Crankymonky and Groove (Edit: yes, and THIRST.).  Shortly after that, Hasbro sent a designer and an engineer out to a GnomeFEST to meet us, and they recruited Talio and One Man Clan into an early version of their Nerf Ambassador program.  The designer from Hasbro is still working there, leading the team on the Rebelle line.  We nerfed around Philadelphia and some paintball field in bumfuck Delaware, and had a few more Apocs and GnomeFESTS.  Around 2005 One Man Clan agreed to pick up some kid from Hoboken who he'd never met on the way to a war.  They sat in uncomfortable silence for about an hour as OMC wondered how this guy was going to load a nerf gun with only one arm.  That guy was JLego, and he turned out to be the fastest most impossible to hit nerfer at that event.  We met lots of other people over the years, and some drifted away or stopped nerfing, including Fred, and then eventually, me.

When I came back in early 2008 after a two year hiatus, I reconnected with Talio and JLego, and they introduced me to some new guy named Splitlip.  We all agreed to carpool down to a DCNO later that spring, and in an alcohol fueled surge of collective nostalgia, the four of us decided to re-boot the LGLF. A month later Talio joined the Mag7 in the worst act of betrayal on American soil since Benedict Arnold.  But that was okay, because we would add Muttonchops in 2009 and Gears in 2010.  Our old allies Crankymonky and Groove would both join us in 2011, and (though he'll deny it) TED joined in around 2012.

Over the years we traveled all over the east coast, to Maryland and Virginia, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Toronto and Chicago.  We went to Penn State for Humans vs Zombies, and some of us flew out for Armageddon in Los Angeles.  We made a lot of friends on those trips, and even more came out to visit us every year at Apoc.  We met the Sex Dwarves of Pittsburgh, and the U3 and Rainbow Clans from Chicago.  We played with nerfers from Ohio, Minnesota, Oregon, Washington, Georgia and Florida.  We helped host Geddon, DCNOs, ECNOs and NENOs.  We ate Hasbro's Pizza and we drank their beer.  We busted UIN13s balls, hit on Lord Draconical's girlfriend and pooped in Forsaken Angel's toilet.

I got a little carried away there.  What was I saying? Oh yeah.

I love this clan, and the people who are in it.  It's been an incredible 14 year journey and I wouldn't trade it for anything.  I know we're scattered all over the country now, and I'm well past my nerf expiration date, but I'll keep going if you do.  Thanks guys.

#354594 Town and PD sanctioning nerf wars, etc.

Posted by Langley on 27 June 2016 - 09:10 AM in Nerf Wars

There aren't any property owners to be concerned about, these wars are all at public parks. We don't trespass on anyone's property.

We do not ask for permission from the township or police department, because generally they can't officially give it to us.  Because of that, sometimes the police show up, or the park ranger.  The worst case scenario is that we are asked to leave the park and have to end the war early.  It has happened before.  But usually if the police roll up they don't even get out of their car, they just watch for a minute and then leave, or check in and make sure we're not playing paintball.

We avoid doing anything that looks suspicious, we don't allow dart blasters that look anything remotely like real firearms, we wear brightly colored clothing, and we play right out in the open where it is clear that we are playing a game.  If a police officer does show up, we all stop playing and put our blasters down and the event host goes over and politely talks to the officer.  I've never had an issue with things escalating with the police at a war.

Edit: Yeah, I guess it's just a conveniently shaped stopper. I don't follow why you are using the tire stem valve in this configuration.  Is it just a conveniently shaped stopper? Why would air  need to flow through it?

My major concern with any homemade airguns is that they are easy to make totally overpowered.  This design looks great for testing, but there's nothing to stop someone from cranking up that thumbscrew until the spring is fully compressed.  $15 blasters with mostly off-the-shelf parts is a noble cause, but I don't know how I would make them fair to use at a war without a chronograph and maybe some security screws.

Slug fixed the issue with attaching STL files.  You should be able to attach it directly to the post now.  Also zip files are a valid file type.
