#39222 December Yano

Posted by rawray7 on 18 October 2004 - 08:50 PM in Nerf Wars

on the pasadena front: there is always the foresty area that we had RayNO, but that is a dart trap and sort of hard to find. not as much of a hike to civilization as Toj's place...but still about 200 meters from the road. I'd much rather an urban area for regular wars, which is why i'm looking into getting permission to use part of the caltech campus. the plus on our side is that we could probably get some students to play with us, the minus is that they might just veto the whole "guns" concept. I'm figuring out how to ask about that stuff right now, and i'll ask some people about how tight security would be if we did that without permission. There is also a less urban abandoned lot by my friends house that we could possibly use. I think Caltech would be an awesome place to play, so i'll seriously look into that next time i'm down there.

So yea I'm not available until Christmas break, around mid-December. If you guys want to war before that go ahead, but I unfortunately won't be there.

It sucks too, because I NEED an outlet for frustration these days. We gotta have an awesome war in December when we're all on break.

pretty much the same story for me. i can try before december, but its probably not going to happen. i'm definately itching for a war, but i agree that we need to find a new spot. i can look harder around here for an urban area- but i wouldn't necessarily call pasadena a 'central' location for socal.

#38078 Political Equity

The debate was interesting, though anybody who pays attention to (real) news didn't learn anything about the issues. I thought Kerry did a good job of bringing attention to things Bush tends to gloss over, and Bush did a good job obfuscating and answering questions that weren't asked. So it goes.

Was it just me, or did Bush answer every question with "Kerry is a flip flop". I mean, I think Kerry did a better job in the debate than gore did in '00, but the whole thing could be pretty much summed as weak sauce.

hey groove, i was wondering, could you find the card "bringer of the black dawn", and change it to "oj simpson" with the special ability: [Tap]: Destroy Target White Woman. a while back my friends and i made an oj simpson deck, we had everything from white bronco equipment, to evidence mishandling instants, to celebrity status enchanments...it was funny. if you find time, i'd think it would be hilarious, and as you may have noticed, my photoshop skills aren't the greatest.

edit: oh and groove, you might want to make your card cost a little less, personally, i wouldn't play you in any deck other than Tooth n' Nail. sorry, i'll stop now.

YEsm the rail is on either side. But the left is So much cooler. See, I think having that mounted the way it is is retarded. Everyone know if you fire a LnL thug style, it has awful acturacy. It shoots way up. I mean WAY up.

i disagree, my LnL can be fired in a variety of 'secret agent', 'western', and 'thug' positions without a significant change in accuracy.

has anyone in SoCal witnessed this $40 combo pack yet? i haven't really been reading too much about its release dates, so pardon me if this is a dumb question. i'm not going to even bother looking until Steve, Zack or Kevin has found one.

spoon's homie jason from chapman was talking to me about this gun kata shit and equilibrium and everything...he thought it was pretty sweet. anyway, he tried some of that stuff at RayNO, and only once did he actually successfully dodge a dart with a gun kata move. a couple times he dodged into bullets that would not have otherwise hit him. that jason guy is hardcore though, gun kata isn't his only crazy antic - first day nerfing ever he shot spoon in the face from 3 feet with a 2k, only guy other than a horseman i've seen use a manta ray successfully, he can shoot two at2ks with one hand....what a badass.

you know those hand-held LED spinner things, that when you spin them, a message appears in a circle in the air? well, my research team over here at the Pasadena Institute of Nerfitude is working on an LED dart, with a customizable message system. just imagine, each nerfer could have their own slogan that would fly through the air with their darts, like "Die, Bitch!" or "So Cool!". it's the future taita, so watch your back.

#32752 Did You Pre-Order The New Nerf Set?

Posted by rawray7 on 31 July 2004 - 08:47 PM in General Nerf

I was thinking about everyone who says it's too expensive...but doesn't the gas to drive around checking stores cost money too? Depending on how many stores you check, and what MPG you get, you may end up meeting the 7 dollars shipping cost.

No...i'm just saying that after i while you'd end up paying less had you shipped it. Of course, you if you drive, say, and SUV or a HUMMER then your gonna be spending a lot more.

even in SoCal, where gas prices are about $.20 higher than most of the country, i would have to try really fucking hard to waste $7 dollars of gas to find a nerf gun...even in an '89 Mazda with shitty mileage.

#32751 X-bow Finished..

Posted by rawray7 on 31 July 2004 - 08:44 PM in Modifications

Theirs a type of ductape that has a smoother top surface. What goo? I dont have any problems with the adhesive on the back.

mod a gun with ducttape, play with that gun for a month or so (preferably in a warm climate, like southern california), when the gun breaks, remove the ductape. then you will see the "goo" i refer to. pain in the ass to get off just about anything.

#32643 X-bow Finished..

Posted by rawray7 on 29 July 2004 - 11:55 PM in Modifications

NO, For the X-bow I used Ducttape. I made like sheets of it by putting two peaces together. Then cutting out circles and sticking the to the rubber on the plunger.

EDIT: It may have the least friction but that shit doesnt hold....You dont wanna put THAT much tape on anyways that it will severely keep the plunger from sliding in the tube. Plus if you have bands or a bungee it wont matter.

hmm...i disagree. i've never had a problem with the masking tape falling off. the two reasons i picked masking tape:
1) it doesn't leave that goo behind like duct tape.
2) it has a smooth outer surface, and slides extremely well with graphite lubricant.

i've never tried a DT3 spring, but i'll tell you the original spring with bands is not too horrible. i can hit people level from 85' any day of the week, and i'm not talking about lobbing one onto their toes.

how do you pre-order it?

#32580 X-bow Finished..

Posted by rawray7 on 29 July 2004 - 11:07 AM in Modifications

I've always wondered what you mean by 'wrapping masking tape around the plunger head.' Are you actually putting the tape around the whole head? Or just around the inner ring to push out the outer rubber?

~Vintage

no, the tape actually goes around the circumference of the rubber plunger. if you think about the rubber plunger as a cup with a hole in the middle: the masking tape lines up flush with the base of the cup, and is wrapped around the circumference of the cup. so, the "bottom" of the cup, (or the back wall of your plunger head) doesn't have any tape on it. the tape widens the radius of the plunger head by being wrapped around it. there will be tape that hangs over the lip of the cup; depending on the width of your tape (i use about .75" width tape) you can cut the tape that protrudes past the top of the cup, or you can fold that excess into the middle of the cup, which is what i usually do.

in conclusion, the tape doesn't push anything out, it actually becomes the contact surface between the rubber plunger head and the inner part of the plunger tube.

zack, i'm assuming they're going to send it to you in spools - so my question is are you going to straighten it before you sell to us or not? i'd personally prefer straightening myself because i don't want to pay the shipping to get a mail-tube with 25 1-foot pieces in it.

also, will you bring this to wars so people can pay you cashmoney?

#32539 X-bow Finished..

Posted by rawray7 on 28 July 2004 - 07:37 PM in Modifications

here comes the self-proclaimed lord of the x-bow:

okay, you've got two problems that i've fixed plenty of times:

1: as everyone has already said, your barrel choice sucks. okay, i'm going to save myself the typing of this and quote my own mod at the end of this, but here's the highlights: a crossbow barrel needs to be at least 10 inches long, the air release mechanism is one of the slowest of any nerf gun. the first section needs to be a very tight squeeze for your darts...you need all of that air in the chamber to get behind it. then you have a section where the dart can "glide", which means you can blow it out, but it shouldn't fall out on its own. then i have about 1.5" of sch. 80 at the end to let some of the air go around, to prevent fishtailing. here's the quote from my mod on this site:

Your gun is now ready, but you'll need a barrel. Because of the 1/2" coupler, you'll be able to put on any variety of barrels via 1/2" PVC. The barrel that I chose to use, because it suits my darts the best is a 3 sectioned telescoping brass barrel. To make the barrel, take 10" of 1/2" sch. 80 PVC, place inside of that 12" of 9/16" inch brass. The brass should stick 3 inches out of the back (the distance from coupler to coupler, not a coincidence) inside of the 12" brass section is a 6" piece of 17/32" brass. This should stick out the back of the 9/16" about 1/8" of an inch, as little as possible.

2: the underpowering is also due to your plunger head's fit in the yellow tube. the heads tend to be too small, what you need to do is wrap masking tape around the large rubber plunger head until you have to jam it down the yellow tube. it should not move past the beggining of the taper at the end. now, what you do is add graphite lubricant (don't use anything gel or liquid) to the inside of your plunger tube (the yellow thing). put it together, after 2 shots or so it will stop feeling "slow" (unless of course you put way too much masking tape on) and it will greatly increase the range. my crossbow went from 45' to 90' by adding three layers of masking tape at the last SoCal war.

if you have questions: first read my mod...then reply.

#32212 Who Would Buy Colored Backer Rod?

Posted by rawray7 on 23 July 2004 - 10:30 PM in General Nerf

looks like '7's on the tips will have to do.

could you please test it in:

1/2" sch. 40 PVC
1/2" sch. 80 PVC
1/2" brass
17/32" brass
9/16" brass
19/32" brass
PETG
CPVC

(don't buy all that brass just take the sample to the hobby store)

if you could describe the fit with words like snug, glides, twists in, falls through, as opposed to "fits" "doesn't fit" that would be wonderful. (i'm sure this is just common sense, but i'm just reminding you)

#32157 Raw-shit-cynic-bbq At2k Rifle Barrel Creation

I think I'll just get threaded adapters. Less work for the lazy person. I'm going to try to pick up the materials tomorrow. I hope Home Depot has SCH80, though. I haven't seen any, but then again I guess I haven't looked. ;) If they don't, then... well, let's just hope they do.

um....i think non-threaded would actually be cheaper, and take less time. "lazy persons" usually go for quick, cheap, and threaded isn't as quick or cheap, and is definately going to need a weird set of adapters to get to the T joint...because to my knowledge they don't sell 1/2" Ts with 2 parallel threaded ports and a non threaded cross. cutting the threads off wouldn't take any time at all, specially since you have to make cuts anyway.

#32156 Who Would Buy Colored Backer Rod?

zack, i would buy 300-500' (depending on how many people in my neighborhood are interested) given that it's not more than 2x loghelp price by the foot, or cut in 2.5" (never been coiled would be nice). in any case i'll be buying some just because its red. oh, and could i get a custom color if i ordered a shitload? if every dart i owned was a light blue, people like bobert would be easier to catch..hehe.

#32134 Raw-shit-cynic-bbq At2k Rifle Barrel Creation

So then do all the adapters need to be threaded?

if you cut the threads off, they fit into regular couplers. or you can use threaded couplers.

#32013 Raw-shit-cynic-bbq At2k Rifle Barrel Creation

Posted by rawray7 on 21 July 2004 - 09:23 PM in Homemades

sch. 80 is usually in the grey->black part of the spectrum. it has threaded ends. it has the same Outer Diameter as any 1/2" PVC, thus fits into all of the same adapters you would use for your sch. 40. the inner diameter is smaller (the walls are thicker) the inner diameter is 19/32" for most brands. this means that zack could slide 9/16" brass right into it, and get a flush fit for the darts to slide into.

#32011 Federal Marriage Amendment

Posted by rawray7 on 21 July 2004 - 09:17 PM in Off Topic

However since there is a seperation of church and state, the government should not force the church to marry two people of the same sex. That decision should be left up to that church. If one church won't marry the partners then they could go to another one that does. I don't mean switch religions I just mean the Christian religion has more than one church. Two churches of the same religion may have different views on this subject. There have been a few churches that do not oppose same sex marriages. This way you still have seperation of church and state and people are equal.

i agree with your point, the government shouldn't have the right to force churches to marry gays...that's the churches deal. but there is where the real problem lies, there needs to be an accessible way to apply for a civil union outside of a church. right now churches are the only way to create a civil union between two people - and i think this crosses the line into the whole "in god we trust". religion (and i know people will argue "well it doesn't say which god") does not and should not be a given as far as the state department is concerned. no one needs the word "god" on the dollar, and no one should have to go to a church to get a tax break. civil unions need to be accesible without going through a church.

on this topic, i remember i was talking to my friend about this a while back and his point was "the government shouldn't even have the right to know whether you're a male or a female, and thus couldn't descriminate against you on any sexual basis, especially in the case of marriage." kind of radical, but i'd thought i'd through it out there.

and merlinski - i agree with Kevin, i've seen some studies done on how same-sex parents have been shown to produce weird side effects in the kids. i can't vouch for the validity of the article i saw, because it was handed to me as "proof" by a man on the sidewalk with a sign that says "homosexuality is a sin". i was arguing with him for a while, and he was quite amusing. can't win an argument with those street zelots. when i asked if he thought he was being a bit offensive, (seeing as how in old town pasadena its not uncommon to see gays/lesbians), he told me "i get the same reaction when i hold up my sign that says "god loves you". nasty people these guys were, a group of about a dozen or so, a huge crowd around them on the sidewalk, some listening, some arguing. anyway, one guy said to me, "what do you think about these guys", he looked like a guy just watching the action, when i said i thought they were "over the top" and going out of their way to create controversy on a public sidewalk, he revealed that he was one of them, and started to quote bible verses i'm sure don't exist. apparently god was quoted as saying "it's wrong to have shit on your dick". anyway....

Human Rights. Basic human rights. Hussein has TORTURED his own people. 'Nuff said. And also, I believe that when Bush announced that they were wrong about the weapons of mass destruction, that was bullshit. There was so much friggin evidence that it only made sense to go (I did a report on this...english). Not to mention that given his history, Hussein would use them if he had the chance.

airapache, am i reading this right? you thought the president was bullshitting about telling us he was wrong? "i believe that when bush announced that they were wrong...that was bullshit(apache, 3)". okay, wtf? on the other hand, i'm sure your amazing english report has better information, proving that the president pulled a big "J/k" about lying, just to show how funny he is. so much "friggin" evidence...like....hmm....none. not a single WMD - all they found was a model plane in a shed, that had the capacity to carry a toxic agent. i'm personally going down to Hobby Shack tomorrow to arrest everyone in there with a model plane.

merlinski, you're my hero. i can't help but make fun of these kids, without you actually proving points, i think us nerfing liberals would be given a bad name. if only cxwq would stop avoiding this thread and start his usual "QED, you lose, i win, here's a link to some british news that i found in .0004 seconds that shows you why you're dumb."

#31021 The Michael Moore Movie

Posted by rawray7 on 12 July 2004 - 07:45 PM in Off Topic

I knew this was a mistake...

Why? Because people disagree with your post? Too bad.

What this thread should be about is the authenticity of the information shown in F-9/11...

You'll be glad to know that there are three teams of researchers checking everything in that movie, and so far the only mistake they've found was that the Saudis have an even bigger investment in businesses owned by Bush's family than Moore claimed in the movie.

I think the biggest criticism of Moore that I hear when discussing this movie with people is "He's so biased...even if Bush did anything good he'd criticize him." And what I tell these people is this - of course he's biased, why does that surprise you? Roger and Me, Bowling for Columbine, Farenheit 9/11- all of these look at a particular issue from one general point of view. I'm not saying that Moore doesn't try to look from both sides, but he chooses to present the other side of the argument either poorly or not in equal measure to his liberal points of view. That's what makes these movies interesting, some people argue they aren't documentaries, but their is no way to present something without a point of view, without a bias. We aren't buggers, the hive queen doesn't control our bodies, and we each have a different frame of reference - Michael Moore presents his, and that's why his movies sell, and that's how they prove a point. Believe me, you wouldn't want to watch a "completely unbiased" documentary. Even if that's possible, it would be the most painfully lame thing to sit through, ever. I agree, there were segments in 9/11 that were so liberal they were lame (i'm thinking of that overdub during bush's reading session during the attacks "what was he thinking? was Bush thinking about his ties to the saudi royal family?"...i just thought that the tone of the overdub was too critical and lame-sounding). If you're having trouble with his new movie, if you think it's not true, if you think he's ridiculously lame and biased - I think you guys should pick up some of Michael Moore's books, particularly Stupid White Men (much of what's in this book is in F-9/11). The books are very well researched, I was awed at the amount of information Moore was able to dig up. I also suggest to you "Lies, and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them", I haven't finished it yet, but its also very well researched, and hilarious.

On the other hand, I'm really dying to see Michael Moore Hates America. From the trailer it doesn't look nearly as well produced as Moore's movies, but I still want to see it because I think it'll be funny enough to be worth my $6.50
