And by the way, I hope no one plans to use darts made with red foam and glitter domes, besides me.

Cause I would be quite pissed off...

#290434 Ultimator With K14 Spring And Clear Plunger Tube

Posted by Lucian on 07 December 2010 - 11:54 PM in Modifications

I'll put a video up of shooting and priming this beast as soon as my neighbor stops playing Online Poker; so my internet doesn't die every time I try to upload it...

And yes, Blue and Ted, it still shoots the original rocket, which I still have.

And I will try a new longer barrel, once I take off the extension spring.

#290374 Ultimator With K14 Spring And Clear Plunger Tube

Posted by Lucian on 07 December 2010 - 04:05 PM in Modifications

I must be wrong, but from the looks of the catch mechanism, is the plunger rod held back by just friction? that can't be right.

Nothing but friction, surprisingly.

Lucian, correct me if I am wrong, but that catch looks very similar to the mechanism used on smooth rod caulk guns.

Judging by Bob's post, and our discussions in #nerfchat.it seems to be the same system

One question though, do you think the catch needs to be reinforced at all? I don't know much about friction catches, but that K14 is BEEFY!

Not at all, it is made out of metal after all.

I'm quite surprised you only get 115' (though it's still plenty of range) out of this mod. The Ultimator has a shockingly huge air cylinder. I don't know how you might test it, but how does the strength of the [k26] springs matchup to the stock spring? How does it do with fewer pumps? I'm left wondering if it's still discharging air long after the dart has left the barrel.

I'll get back to you once I test it with a longer barrel.

Very well done, now this a blaster with style. Out of curiosity, what is the approximate air volume of the plunger tube?
Edit: In the step one pic, "open it up" I can see approximately 8 different colors/textures of carpet in an area roughly 6' x 4'. I just wanted to point that out.

With the plunger head 10 inches from the front, the volume is 49.08"^3

See you mofos there!

I'd like the rule of no barrel taps added. Or at least, you must tap with the side of the barrel only, and anything with exposed brass can't be used. I got hurt last time, and don't want it happening again.

#290263 Ultimator With K14 Spring And Clear Plunger Tube

Posted by Lucian on 06 December 2010 - 03:30 PM in Modifications

Step 6.
Assemble the gun, tape the bushing, bolt it in, and slap a hopper on it
Posted Image

Alternatively, you can keep the stock spring, and just use the clear plunger tube for a striking visual effect
Posted Image

And for those of you that are curious, this is how the Ultimator catch system works Posted Image

Issues with this mod:
The Ultimator was able to send a Slug dart 115’ in about 8-10 pumps, however I came across the issue of the plunger rod gradually slipping forward. Maybe some fine tuning will correct it, but be aware of this issue if you decide to do the mod.

Mcmaster-Carr #s:
Plunger tube- 8585K341 1 Ft. Polycarbonate Round Tube, 2-3/4" Od, 2-1/2" Id, 1' Length, Clear

Plunger Tube Bushing- 4880K172 1 Each Std-wall (schedule 40) White Pvc Pipe Fitting, 2" X 1/2", Hex Bushing, Pipe End Male X Socket F

K14 Springs- 9637K14 1 Pack Continuous-length Compression Spring, Spring-tempered Stl, 11" L, 1.093" Od, .105" Wire

Feel free to post and questions, comments, and concerns. I hope this write up was worth your time to read.

#290262 Ultimator With K14 Spring And Clear Plunger Tube

Posted by Lucian on 06 December 2010 - 03:28 PM in Modifications

Hello again Nerfhaven, today I’ll be showing you how to give your Ultimator a clear plunger tube, minimize the dead-space, and get it to work with a normal compression spring.

Please refer to the write up and the Mcmaster list at the bottom of the page for a materials list.

Step one.
Get your Ultimator
Posted Image
And open it up
Posted Image

Step 2.
Take the barrel and spring
Posted Image
And put them aside

Step 3.
Order a 1’ section of 2.5” ID 2.75” OD Polycarbonate tubing, a pack of K14 springs, and a 2” to 1/2” PVC reducing bushing from Mcmaster
Posted Image

Step 4.
Slap a large metal washer in front of the priming-mech to protect the plastic (Ignore the [k26] spring)
Posted Image

Then go ahead and slide on a cut down K14 spring and bolt the plunger head back on

Step 5. Machining the Plunger tube.
First, cut a slot on the top and bottom of the plunger tube, using the stock one as a guide. I did this using my Band-saw.
Posted Image
The slots were 1.25” wide, on both sides, and went down about 1.75”

Then you will need to line up the plunger tube for the 2 holes on each side that secure the plunger tube to the gun Posted Image
And drill them out with a 3/8” drill bit
Posted Image
I screwed this part up a bit and had to widen the holes.

#290242 Big Blast With Intergrated Airtech 2000

Posted by Lucian on 06 December 2010 - 12:17 PM in Modifications

Thanks for the kind words everyone!
The pics were probably down because I was resizing them.

"I would really like to find out more about the polyester resin. Is it like liquid epoxy? Does it legitimately strengthen and stiffen the shell? Is it expensive?"

Polyester Resin a pourable plastic, comparable to Acrylic. It seems to stiffen the shell, but because of its brittleness, I doubt it will strengthen areas. 36oz is about $30+the bottle of Catalyst

“Is there any way of completing this mod without using up the space for a forward mounted pump?”

Nope :)

"How many more pumps than usual does it take to fill the 4B because you are also filling the 2k?"

About the same (5), maybe 1 or 2 additional pumps though because of the slight increase in volume.

I would like to thank Broken for his assistance with the mod, here's a bit for you you guys

P.s. The pictures will be re-sized soon

#290208 Big Blast With Intergrated Airtech 2000

Posted by Lucian on 05 December 2010 - 11:24 PM in Modifications

Step 2 Continued.
Then you will need to screw a side-plate on both sides of the trigger
Posted Image

Step 3.
To hold the tank in place, I poured a Polyester resin into the shell, making sure to cover the tank to protect it. You can get this resin at a local craft store, I will explain it further in a future topic
Posted Image
If you have any resin left over, go ahead and reinforce the shell
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

From here I packed the gun up and sent it to Brokensvt.
Posted Image

I apologize for the large pictures, I will re-size them tomorrow.

#290207 Big Blast With Intergrated Airtech 2000

Posted by Lucian on 05 December 2010 - 11:21 PM in Modifications

Step 4.
Find the middle wall where the tank/barrel goes (see pic)
Posted Image
And trim it down, repeat for the other side of the shell
Posted Image
Make sure your tank fits in place nicely
Posted Image

Step 5.
Now minimize the shell
Posted Image
Then you will need to widen out the hole for your PVC barrel.
Posted Image

You could stop here and have a great simple and clean primary
Posted Image

But part 2 of this mod is integrating an Airtech 2000 tank, which Brokensvt has helped me with. (Ignore the different coupler in the following pictures)

Part 2, step 1.
Get a 2k tank, and glue it to a pvc coupler that is cut down so it rests snuggly in the tank
Posted Image
Line up where you want the tank’s coupler to be on the gun
Posted Image
And cut a hole for the PVC barrel
Posted Image

Step 2.
Next you will need to machine a trigger
Posted Image
Then line up where the pin would go in this trigger. and cut it to fit- also cut a notch in the shell for the trigger pin
Posted Image

#290206 Big Blast With Intergrated Airtech 2000

Posted by Lucian on 05 December 2010 - 11:18 PM in Modifications

Today, Brokensvt and myself will be doing a write-up to build your very own Big Blast with integrated Airtech 2000, with a shared stock pump.

Materials needed.
1. 3/4" to 1/2" PVC slip fitting
2. 1/2” PVC coupler
3. Polycarbonate in varying sizes
4. Various hardware
5. Goop, Gorilla glue, and Solvent weld
6. Polyester Resin – optional but recommended
7. Vinyl tubing- 1/4” OD 1/8” ID
8. Super Soaker Shot Blast pump., or any check valve that will fit
9. Brass tubing connectors

Step 1.
Get your Big Blast
Posted Image
Remove the Orange Ring
Posted Image
And open it up
Posted Image

Step 2.
Find the section of plastic on the side of the tank (See pic)
Posted Image
And remove it
Posted Image
And then remove the stock barrel
Posted Image

Step 3.
Get a 3/4" to 1/2" PVC slip fitting
Posted Image
And then sand the 3/4” side till it fits the end of the tank
Posted Image
Apply solvent weld to the tank and bushing and let it dry, be sure to do so in a well ventilated location, preferably outside

Plunger tube test fit was a huge sucess. I'm out of label/sticker paper, so I'm going to machine the plunger tube to fit in the shell tomorrow. Till then, enjoy the eye-candy

2 questions:
How is the stock seal on the plunger head? And, how comfortable is that grip? It seems a little iffy from the pictures
