Given my current obligations, I won't be able to make one for a while, so it's not a scheduling issue; I appreciate the accommodation, though!
I hope to be able to join back up with you guys soon, though. It'll be interesting to see what kind of changes you've made, as well as the new faces.

Yes, the Barricade did have an on/off sliding switch.
I guess your playing style and electronic setup will determine if it's a good mod or not.

The title says it all. How does hosting an event work? Do I just have people show up or do I need to talk to people associated with the park about it?

That would depend on the park. You may need to RSVP an area or confirm you're allowed to host a Nerf event.
